This past weekend I went to see Grandaddy (great again) and SFA (not as good as in DC, I guess the atmosphere in DC made a difference in their mood) at the Irving Plaza in NYC.
The truth is that after having been in different venues in Boston, Philadelphia, NYC and Raleigh, I have to say that the 9:30 is the best place, maybe by far. The sound, the atmosphere, being able to smoke one or a few cigarrettes (although here I can understand other views), not having to wait 20 minutes to go to the restroom, not having to wait 25 minutes to buy a beer, and of cpourse being able to choose a good beer instead of having to drink the ugly Budweiser in a small ugly and crowded corner reserved for people drinking alcohol. It's good to have the 9:30 in DC.
However, among the few things I don't like about the 9:30, I guess the main one is having allowed JT to play at the 9:30. Visiting the board now is sort of depressing. Most threads end up losing the interest and fun once a new JT-lover-new-member posts something related to JT.
I still hope the 9:30 will get back to where it was a few days ago, a board where you can have fun and especially where you can learn about new bands. Just let JT go back to MTV and have these new board members go back to MTV as well.

I agree with you that 930 is one of if not the best club in the US. I think one thing you neglected to mention was that the 930 club reflects the diversity of the city it is in. I like the fact you never know who is going to play 930. In my opinion, it demonstrates they are open minded to all forms of music and refuse to limit their ability to survive by simply only booking one genre of artists.

The 9:30 Club atmosphere is apparently a good fit for Justin Timberlake and his fans also. That's cool. I think its nice, if not necessary, that the day of that show is balanced- You get the classic 9:30-esque stylings of Jonathan Richman early, then the Timberlake show.

I really don't mind who shows up to play at 930...and remember the club has to make a profit, so if a JT show hits a home run for Seth, then he will be able to continue to support the up and coming bands that probably won't pull more than a couple hundred people and therefore probably be a loser financially for the club.

Yeah Barcelona. Shame on you for having an opinon! If you don't like it here, then why don't you return to whence it is you came from and go and lance a defenseless bull, or eat snails, or wear berets and suck cheese thru a straw or whatever it is that they do in that living hell that passes for a land that you hail from.

I think it's yet another testament to the club that JT wants to come back. And do you realize how much money this *second* show in one night will make for the club? Oh man, it will keep us in The Datsuns and Jonathon Richman for months! Go for it, Justin. The craziness will be over soon.
And I agree that the 9:30 is maybe the best club in the U.S. for it's size and mission. Can you even imagine being at another club like it where even the women NEVER wait in line for the bathroom? And the Back Bar is glorious. And there's a small seating area if you're suddenly fatigued or drunk, there's upstairs. Sublime.
And Seth, you even put the coat/purse hooks up in the women's room stalls. You're SO wonderful!

PS, if the Club had bands I liked every night, I would probably keel over from the stress of choosing what to see, as I can't see everything. I actually enjoy the breaks (unless they go on too long!).

Had to be a guy. Chicks just aren't that annoying for no reason. It's that whole batting off mailboxes from a moving car. Just not a chick thing. Alas, we get WE television instead of Spike for it, but what the hell. I can still watch Spike! (Just for Joe Schmo and Car and Driver t.v., the rest looks dumb so far, as it's mostly wrestling).

The Nightclub 9:30 is the best club in the country...
the Fillmore in SF and Tipitina's in New Orleans are both great, but not as good as our hometown club..
regarding the picture.....that is Rich on the left, and Seth on the right...the woman's name escapes me at the moment....I know she used to work for the club years ago, and came back after Liz left to go to law school......

And as a note, Seth was in the top five for promoters.
I went back and looked at a few other years, and 9:30 has been in first or second place for five years (I didn't go back farther). That is just awesome.

I went back and looked at a few other years, and 9:30 has been in first or second place for five years

I just started getting into the local/club music scene a couple of years ago with a Rollins show at the 930. Been to many shows there since and hit a few other venues in the Richmond, DC, Baltimore area. The 930 by far is the best place I have been to. The staff alone make it great. We have all been to venues where the 'help' is watching you the whole time with a 'what the hell are you doing in my club' look. The 930 staff goes out of their to try to make the evening a good time for everyone. It amazes me that of all the shows I have been to that I have never seen any assholes at the club. I guess maybe they hace gotten the word that its just as good that they not show up. Then again I have seen the crew handle things that could have turned into a situation in such a manner that it was cool for everyone. Add to all of that the the club itself is a great place to see a show, the acts cross such a vide spectrum of taste, and you dont have to spend a weeks pay to go to a show just makes it all the better. Hell I haven't even mentioned how cool of a place it is to bring your family for a show! Anyway we tool up to DC at least once a month just to hit the 930. Job well done to all you who run that place. I hope each of you enjoy what you are doing cause you sure as hell make it so that all of us can enjoy being there!

I think I have said this several times in the past. Basically there are two reasons why I visit the 9:30 board. Sometimes you can have a lot of fun reading some of the messages, but especially the board has introduced me to some new excellent bands. The other day I had two objections. First and most importantly, I wasn't able to see Jonathan Richman because the show was at 7pm on Monday. Yes, we should allow the 9:30 to make money so that they can bring smaller bands. However, in this case, making money for this supposedly great reason didn't allow me to see one of these smaller bands. Yes, this is related to musical taste and most people wouldn't mind having Jonathan Richman playing at that time on a regular time. In my case, it prevented me from seeing the show. No problem, I accept it, but would like the board's reaction if they had put a show by Radiohead, Dandy Warhols, Interpol or any other big alternative band at that time on a Monday because of JT and the money he brings to the club.
The other reason was that when I visted the board that day, most threads I saw had lots of posts (unrelated to the thread topic) on JT and how cute, cool, great he is, in a way I had not seen in the past, way too many messages that made me lost the interest on the thread. I would hope these were not the type of messages I would tend to see in the board, not because I don't want to have JT fans on the board, but because of the way in which they were killing the threads. However, there is nothing I can do and nothing I should do to prevent it (I guess most people hate when some of us start talking about soccer). If the board goes in that direction, fine, I guess I will have to start buying these alternative music magazines to learn about new bands. It is not being intransigent, it is just that the 9:30 and Blackcat do a great work to make sure that good alternative music comes into town.

Jonathan Richman was actually scheduled early at his request. total coincidence. really.
when JT was looking for which date to do, and they were all booked, that date was obviously good because there was already an early show.
I have a Page Down button on my computer, and I use it to scroll past stuff I don't care about reading.
my personal tastes are pretty far from JT. in fact, I can't stand that whole genre. but I hear he's a really great performer, and I love to watch a crowd really get off, so I'll be there.

Since Seth answered your first concern (Jonathon Richman would have been an early show regardless of Timberlake's performance), I'll address the second.
I wholeheartedly agree on the inappropriate and copious Timberland posts, and if you look, you'll see board regulars mentioning to the JT fans that it would behoove them to keep the JT exclamations to JT threads. And it did seem to die down a little.
Plus, Barcelona, once that show is over, I think things will get back to normal in a matter of days, once the effusive show reviews go up and regulars openly mock the JT newbies again (which I'm not condoning, but the nudging tends to work a bit!)....

Seth, if the early J. Richman was scheduled regardless of the JT show, then I was wrong. My mistake.
Bagster, I haven't been able to check the board lately, but the few minutes I spent now going through recent threads tells me you were right, the JT thing has cooled down.
