A) what's the best record store in town (based on such characteristics as price, selection, ambience, vinyl presence/selection, etc... you know the drill and i really need to know)?
2) what do you mates of states fans (or otherwise interested parties) think of team boo? are you going to team boo them off the stage?
III) how's this for newbie questions?
-
Your lips are moving. But I can't hear what your sayin'.
-
quite frankly the record stores in the dc area bite... there is no really good one stop shopping in terms of selection and price...
Record and Tape Traders around Baltimore may come the closest but their vinyl selection is limited
DCCD may be the best, but it's a hassle to shop at unless you live near by.
If digging through hundreds of cds for that elusive bargin is your thing The CD Exchanges are good. Selection depends on what promos are being dumped.
CDepot has a vast selection of back catalog stuff at reasonable prices. If you are looking for the latest indie release try elsewhere.
Joes Record Paradise has good prices on used stuff and great older vinyl. The new selection hit or miss...
Best Buy unfortanely has the best first week prices on new releases...
There are other used CDs shops in the area but they tend to have higher prices then I like to pay.

Mates of State remind me of that duo on Saturday Night Live who play the piano and sing at like High School Dances and other banquets. Will Ferrell and i forget the chicks name. Funny, but all to real in person.

ana gasteyer...
that skit cracks me up
and yer right, mates of state do remind me of them

I have luck finding stuff at selected Olssons and selected Borders.
CD Cellar in Falls Church has a great selection of used stuff, but it can be kind of pricey for used ($8-$10). They have a "slightly scratched" section where the CDs are cheaper ($3-$6) and a $1 section also. I've never had a problem with any of the discs I've bought there.
-
woah, is CDCellar still around? am i right that it's actually a cellar and i remember shopping there when i lived there in 8th grade? that's so money.
-
okay, fine, so no one else likes mates of states. but i courteously call you crazy. i mean, can't you drop yer disaffected facade for a second to say you couldn't get into it by imagining that that was your life? you wake up in the morning with the person you love and write music about it? ah well, i guess romance is dead... ;)
-
oh and to nip the possibility of annoying logicless argument right in the bud, that "disaffected facade" thing was tongue-in-cheek, loves.
-
Broadkat, I have no idea what you are talking about. What is States of mates? If you used sentences it might improve your chances of a sensible reply.

God, I can't stand Mates Of States' recorded works. In fact, I have to turn the radio off when they come on because they drive me insane. I'd have to kill myself if I ever saw them live!
Broadkat, if that's what you call romance, it's time to call it quits.

The Sound Garden is the best record store in Baltimore, MD. Great selection of... well, everything plus a robust vinyl section. Record And Tape Traders around Baltimore come a close second. Their prices aren't as competitive as Sound Garden's.

Personally, I find that Soundgarden's new prices are much better but R+TT's used are better. Though SG tends to have a better used selection. In both cases, you really have to walk into the store at the right time if you're looking for more obscure works. In the end, they are both pretty good.
Does anyone know if Soundgarden lost any stock when Thames St. flooded after Isabel?

Jaguar, I'm thinking no. Me and a friend were there a week after Isabel had hit and the place was running just as usual. No damage was visible on any of their stock or to the premises.
Either that or they did an amazing job cleaning up.

mates of state. . .hmmm, i think i saw them open for american analog set earlier this year, or was it last year, at black cat. are they from san mateo, or am i thinking of one of the other married bands.
-
I like them. The first song sounds like that Boys and Money, or whatever that Good Charlotte song is called. I saw them live last year with Rainer Maria, it was totally cute. I think I like Team Boo better than Our Constant Concern.

There used to be a great record store on Reistertown Rd. in Baltimore County called Music Machine. They had all of the original punk, post-punk and New Wave releases at the time. They're still in business but are just about entirely mail order now and deal more in collectibiles and rarites. They have a web site for anyone who likes that kind of stuff....

After checking out the web site, I don't think it's still current!? Maybe they went completely out of business?

Talked to one of the employees I know there and they were totally cool from in. That part of Fells suvived intact. No damage to that store, but Fletchers got some basement damage (they own that too I believe).
Does Vinyl Ink still exist in Silver Spring? Haven't been there in years but they had quite the vinyl selection.
if you are going capitalless and no punctuation isn't this more e e cummings than anything

That's who i reference when getting crap over it.

Thanks Sir HC for the info. ;)
From all of the news footage of Fells Point, it looked like Soundgarden would have suffered a fair amount of damage with the shelving being it's saving grace. Glad to hear that all is okay with them.
I didn't even consider Fletcher's with it being so much farther away from the water. That's really bad. At least the club and the bar are okay but I don't know what all they use the basement for. Hope that they have decent insurance and that they can get back on their feet in no time. Especially considering that it's one of the few places in Baltimore that I really like.

Hmmm...it's a nice space, but the sound could use a little work. I was there when some friends of mine soundchecked, and their equipment picked up radio frequencies the whole time. Even after the sound guy (who was genuinely helpful) adjusted some of the amps, there was still a loud buzz coming through the speakers. Apparently this is just a problem they live with.
-
Lol. Notice I said, "in Baltimore". The Ottobar and The Mojo are about the only other two that I like and they aren't a whole lot better. Not enough Indie Rockers left in Baltimore anymore to invest too much state-of-the art right now. As far as I'm concerned, that's to the area's loss.

Will the Mojo let me in if I'm under 21?

Actually I always blame the smoke eaters from the bar downstairs. They are right under the stage, have a real high voltage (and I assume transformers to make that) and give the buzz. Still nothing can ever compare to Fort Reno for buzz. There it is amazing as you have TV and radio coming through everything.
