Azaghal, I'll be there but Stars Of The Lid are only an extra treat for me. My puprose is to see the 1st opener, Hammock, who never, ever play out live. This appears to be a one off and only their 2nd live show to date (that I am aware of). Make sure you get there in time to see them. My Gaze friends are all jealous of us for this one. :p
For the record, Hammock aren't really a Shoegaze band but they have enough delay to make them what I call Shoegaze friendly.
-
I've heard a decent amount from Hammock and am excited to see them too. Christopher Willits should be a treat as well. Solid lineup all around. :D

Are the teenagers worth checking out? I've heard good things.

Honestly, I'm not the best person to answer this as I've only heard a song or two. We had a song of theirs in rotation since the station made its debut on Air Atlantic Underground Radio (http://www.live365.com/stations/airatlantic?site=live365) but I think that was just recently removed to make room for some other music. May reload it if the listeners request that I do so.
My impression is that they are okay and wouldn't mind seeing them but not a priorty on my list. Should appeal to a lot of the Indie hipsters on the forum. Actually, I considered going myself and may end up doing so if the situation presents itself but the odds are highly against that. Too many work obligations.

They're horrible. BUT, I love their remix they did for Goldfrapp's "Happiness".

The Teenagers are fun and dancey. I love the lead singer and he tends to jump into the crowd and dance with most the women up front (as i recall almost no men being that close to the stage).
but my friends and i all decided early on that he really cant sing and they sounded really bad. but the music is addicting regardless of how cheesy it is.
that being said - i am seeing them at maxwells for a second time. i really cant imagine them playing somewhere like the bowery - so im opting for a smaller show.

Oooooh! I'm going to try and do it in the daytime on Thursday and Friday. I'm staying in the West Village, so I know about the some of the stuff going on. I'd try for tomorrow morning, but I'm going to try and do the Santogold in-store at Virgin Union Square! Should be fun!

Sidenote: Calvin Harris tonight was wicked fun! He's really just a brilliant, smart, engaging live dance act. I don't understand why he's not as huge as he deserves to be here. The live show just trumps the album experience, and as I said, he's a really engaging performer, so it makes everything that much better. He said he'll be back for a more complete North American tour next year, so keep him on your radars, guys!

calvin was soooooo money last night. an absolute blast, a party in a box. great band, amazingly tight and powerful. i can't hype his live show enough, i'm having trouble coming up with a band that is more fun (gogol, maybe, but only the first time i saw them - whereas calvin doesn't get old). thanks to ixkpd-bk for holding down the rail until the missus and i arrived last night. front and center! bowery ballroom sounded pretty good, and not painfully loud.
calvin continues to get my highest recommendation. a definite must-see.

thursday 5/1 - langhorne slim @ iota
-
I will be going to WTMDs First Thursday free show with Jukebox the Ghost, on thursday, of course.
thats it for me. aside from working the super awesome, Saves the Day show.

Aren't they both technically in week 2?
Friend's trying to convince me to see some show at jammin java friday and the electric prunes monday. Just when I thought I was going to get a nice little show break before/after SOTL/Hammock/Willits...

if you happen to check this - i decided id see whats playing that is worth checking out. ive listed a few that really stood out.
Thurs: 3:30 War Child - Village 7 (11th & 3rd) - the best documentary ive seen. if emmanuel jal is there - it will make it even better. he ended the Q&A performing one of his songs (hes a hip-hop artist from sudan). its basically his story of growing up in Sudan and what hes done with his life. Theres a bit of the movie that takes place in DC too.
and 4:15 Somers Town - Village East Cinemas - a new film from Shane Meadows (This Is England). Has the same feel as his first film - its a friendship about 2 boys in somers town. An awesome, awesome film. Besides all films before 5pm are only $8.
Friday: 1:45 The 27 Club at village east (my other fav non doc at the festival) - Los Angeles rock star Eliot Kerrigan (Joe Anderson of Across the Universe and Control) is dealing with the overdose of his partner Tom Wallace at the age of 27 by dodging the fans, buying a case of drugs, and hiring a square young grocery clerk (David Emrich) to drive him home to Joplin, Missouri.

Wait! Where?
(Bet I can't go anyway. :( )

Sooooooo...Goldfrapp tonight in NYC. It was pretty good, her voice is such an instrument. Contrary to Mr. Sweetcell's claims that she was lip-synching during a song, I definitely know for a fact that all the main vocals we heard during the show were coming directly from Alison's mouth. I loved the mix of old and new, and the general crowd response to the last 5 or 6 songs. Not the best show I've seen them do, and in all honesty, it doesn't touch Calvin Harris' live set from last night.
Oh, and I caught Santogold today as well. What. A. Woman. I loved it SOOOO much. She ended up performing about 8 songs from the new album, all of it VERY well received. Love. Her.
Neverwhere, I got a ticket to see "Let the Right One In" tomorrow afternoon. Know if it's amazing or not? I've heard wonderful things about it already.
-
Black Cat
With (The Sounds of) Kaleidoscope (who I bet you're a fan of :( ) [/b][/quote]

rjd2 thursday
crowded house friday
so who is going to be at the club later in the evening on saturday? there is no one booked. maybe crowded house is doing a second night?

Ah, crap. Now I really wish I could go. Another band on the Air Atlantic (http://www.live365.com/stations/airatlantic?site=live365) playlist.

Ive heard really good things about Let the Right One In. Let me know how it is.
Ive heard theres something *huge* going on at the Village 7. Some sort of big screening (with lots of celebrity) for Pray the Devil Back to Hell. Ill be helping out. Im pretty sure youre at a show at that time, but if youre around - you should say hi :)
Verve last night was really awesome. Richard Ashcroft still sounds amazing! It was mostly songs off of Urban Hymns with some of the earlier songs mixed in. Great night! Played for nearly 2 hours!
-
saturday is free comic book day.

calvin was indeed the superior of the two shows, but goldfrapp was still damn solid. took a while for the crowd to get into it and was a lot more fun once they did. i still maintain that for one song, there was a disconnect between the movement of alison's lips and the sound coming out of the PA - best explained by tape. i think i was in a pretty good position to judge this - i was front row, dead center, closest person to alison :D ixkpd-bk, your costume was... indescribable. wow. well done. i think.
i got some pix of both nights, will try to put them online tonight.

No, unfortunately I flew on Friday (the Calvin show was Thursday) but saw the Coup play with a live band (that's Boots Riley with DJ Pam the Funkstress - such a rare show with her on the bill), Goldfrapp, SMD/Cut Copy and The Mae Shi. Yeah, the SMD show will be one of the best this year :)

I was at the Tuesday night show, about five rows back on the floor, between Ashcroft and Simon Jones. Gave me a chance to appreciate Jones' unwavering enthusiasm and fine bass playing. Reminded me of Mani.
Some thoughts: I thought pretty much every song was excellent, although some maybe didn't live up to their potential (the guitar seemed low in the mix at least early on). But the show built momentum and the 'peak' at the end of Come On was mind blowing - I think literally.
Urban Hymns may be my favorite album of the era (kind of a yang to OK Computer's yin) so the emphasis on those songs was fine with me. I saw Ashcroft at 9:30 in 2001 and he also played a lot from the album - but it was nice to see them played counterbalanced and fleshed out as they are supposed to be. Ashcroft got all the credit when they broke here in '97-98, but everyone in the band brings something essential to the table.
Ashcroft was in fine form - he doesn't seem to have aged (none of them do) but the trademark thousand mile scowl from the last incarnation of the Verve has been replaced by a positive/spiritual presence (though thankfully he's got an edge back that seemed to have been lost in his solo days).

ok, so no rjd2 for me tonight.
when are the tickets for saturday's crowded house show going on sale?

Couldnt agree with you more :)
I saw Im From Barcelona last night and it was a really awesome show (perhaps the exact opposite of the verve). lots and lots of balloons, too much confetti (can there ever be too much tho?) and just pure fun. Everyone was singing along, fans were on stage helping out with songs and the band was in great spirits. You cant help but smile when you see that band and dance a whole lot.
Now its time to get ready for tribeca film festival. so cant wait till this is over and i can have a normal schedule. and for whomever said theres no great films out there - while mainstream films may be lacking - the DC film fest was going on in DC and i heard there were some great films.
AFI Silver Docs is coming up! Cant go wrong.
-
My vote for the ugliest frontman ever.

I could see them being super fun for maybe 20 minutes then quickly becoming unbarably annoying after that.
-
That's about 19 minutes longer than I'd give them.
