www.duffysdc.com (http://www.duffysdc.com)
Half a block away -- really good.

looks good thanks alot

I wouldn't call Duffy's "really good"
It's a fine bar, but the service at the tables is really inconsistent and they regularly screw up the tab on tables. If you go, go to the bar and pay for your drinks as you go.
-
If you're into high price Belgian beers and absolutely abysmal service, go to the Saloon on U Street.

I have never experienced either of these problems, nor watered-down drinks like I have at DC9.

Some people don't like Saloon because of its stringent anti-dickhead regulations, but the food is really good and the service is fine as long as you don't act like a 21 year old fratboy.

I don't act like a dickhead, and I'm far from a 21 year old, but making a table wait 20 plus minutes order a beer, then not allowing them to order food with the beer or when the beer was brought to the able, then waiting another 15 minutes to come back to take the food order is definitely a dickhead move. All in all, it took us 90 minutes to have a sandwich and a quick beer; the vast majority of thos minutes were spent waiting for the servers next move.

totally agreed. wonderful selection of beers...never going back.

the no ordering beers with food policy is weird... the rest of the policies such as no loud talking, are definitely anti-dickhead.
It's a quirky neighborhood bar where the owner actually cares about what goes on within his walls, even if some of those cares are oddball... that makes the place special, along with the great beer selection and food. For every indignant person who swears never to go back, there are people like me who are glad for that much more room at the bar. :)

agreed. Yummy belgian beers trump slow service for me.
-
It seems that the point would be to get the customer to buy as many 10 dollar beers as possible. I've never been a server, but I can't imagine such a policy making the server's job any easier.

There's a fine line between people controlling their own dickheadedness and a business owner doing the controlling for them. At that point, I think the business owner becomes the dickhead. The Saloon=The Birchmere?

I've been going to Saloon for years and I have never once had a problem with service there....

I have to chime in here because the one time I was at the Saloon the service was utterly abysmal.
