This one's my favorite because it's so fitting in so many ways:

Seriously, is there a more fitting company for AC to do a commercial for?

I'm too lazy to seach for them on youtube but 1990's have had 2 different songs appear in ads for Payless Shoes.

A gay liberal doing a commercial for Volvo? Doesn't sound that odd to me.

The Shins "Sleeping Lessons" - also for zune.  interestingly enough, they've also contributed an album cover to an iphone ad (http://cultofmac.com/indie-rockers-the-shins-endorse-both-zune-and-the-iphone/1533).

wow, and blatant shilling too - its one thing to licence a song for use quite another to sing a corny jingle

weren't the shins also involved in an ad for that new voice-activated/bluetooth/mp3 player car integration technology?  i think smackie mentioned in TSTYNTK a while back... drawing a total blank here.  maybe it was modest mouse?

The Shins are total corporate sluts.  They were shilling for McDonalds 6-7 years ago.

I can't find a link for it, but Modest Mouse let Nissan use "gravity rides everything".

And they took out my favorite line.

you could make the argument that this is less "offensive." or, i could. licensing an already existing song, you are killing any of its original artistic meaning. but if you're just shilling, well, that's just a job.

anyway, none of these are too surprising, just a lot of the sub pop marketing machine getting their bands in ads. rogue wave, the shins, band of horses, etc. here are a couple of more "shocking" ones:

the flatmates -- obscure c-86 gods --  in a payless shoes ad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzIpCfB-YnE)

chris knox -- new zealand indie pop god --  in a heineken ad you've seen a million times if you've been watching the nba playoffs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sn-NtOXFE3Y)

That was a great commercial.  Here's the same commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KO9ibhyI2xg) featuring One AM Radio.

They also have a commercial with the Bravery and one featuring Digitalism. (http://www.pontiac.com/divisional/newsevents/news_music.jsp?brand=divisional&pagename=models_prices)

And one with the Dandy Warhols. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jS2LlySRliQ&feature=related)

And one with the Silversun Pickups. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mT48kA61te0)

Did I mention I know their music director?

this has always been one of my favorites. it's an ad for a minivan and after you hear some of the atmospheric MM song the voice-over starts. "moms have changed..."

Also, add Thievery Corporation to the list. They're indie to me because well they run an independent label. I remember back in the late 90s, that they were used in a few different ads for Dockers and Levi's I do believe.

It's ironic when UPS uses a band named  The Postal Service (http://youtube.com/watch?v=I0nki9O4ivo) in their ads.

i believe the story goes something like this: The band took the name because they used UPS to ship their tapes back and forth across the country (they made "Give Up" via mail).  UPS saw that they adopted the name "The Postal Service" and threatened to sue.  However, a deal was reached that the band could keep the name as long as UPS could use songs for promotional material.

Right...which is why it's odd that UPS uses them and not the USPS.

not really that indie, but still surprising nonetheless, would be the kohl's ad with like 30 seconds or more of a ben lee song. it's long...

So what I'm understanding is that indie is the new sell out????

James, 'Born of frustration' was used for a hotel chain commercial a couple of years ago.

I went out and bought the Nike Drake album after that VW ad featured Pink Moon but was disapointed with the rest of the album.
