Dark Star Orchestra.

But the opener is a better band,
 Hot Buttered Rum.

mmm DSO is the shit.

I've only seen Bobby+Ratog once, and given that brief exposure I definitely think DSO has the upper hand.

When I saw Phil and Friends at 'Roo 2006, they hit it out of the park! I fell in love with Joan Osborne that night... they were on FIRE. Saw them again at All Good '08 and they were also raging.

But DSO did kill it on the late night... best show of All Good '08 for me.

Band with an original member of the group vs. tribute band.  Who wins?

But Ratdog played with Bongwater on Dave Sanborne's show.

I would like to state for the record that I think all "tribute" bands (or cover bands as i call them...cause lets not sugar coat it) should be flushed down the toilet and washed away for good.

I realize that maybe i dont get it.  I would probably refinance my house to see the Velvet Underground back in 1969 and I may pay $500 or so to see a full fledged reunion today, but i dont think i would pay five dollars to see some college brats cover a bunch of their songs.

I mean, we continuously argue the originality merits of every new band out there, yet when someone outwardly and openly plays someone elses music, its a "tribute" and its ok.   go figure.

I know people love these things just as they love the reunion tours with only half of the original members and 1/4 of the original energy, but not me.  kill em all.

That's because sometimes it's just about going out and having fun.  For me, DSO gets zero originality points, but they're a hell of a good time.  And I miss The Dead.  I can see a DSO show, close my eyes and it's just crazy how close they sound to the real thing.  I need that once in a while.

I'm with you BC. DSO is more than just a "tribute" band. It's not just the music it's the whole vibe, which is hard to describe to someone who is not a true Grateful Dead enthusiast. There was nothing like a Dead show and probably never will be.  For those of us who would like to close our eyes and envision Mr. Garcia "playin in the band", DSO cannot be matched.
