Well i'd have to say the best Zombie film of the year was "the Nature of Nicholas", but thats out on DVD now, and not in the theatre.

I Am Legend is terrible. It's barely a shadow of the book.
Why is it that Hollywood decides to (re)make a movie version of a sci-fi/horror classic, and then removes pretty much every basic principle set forth in the original story?
Also, (and I know this is insane coming from a Star Wars fan, but) LESS UNNECESSARY GGI, PLEASE.

Sorry, I'm still going to see it. But, I am also going to see Juno next week.

I'm going to see "Walk Hard" Thursday night. My expectations are really low. I've seen the Beatles clip and (naturally) didn't think it was funny but I did enjoy Dewey Cox's "protest Dylan" song, "Dear Mr. President":
"I stand for the midget..." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMPmimxDTsQ)
I also loved the "plugged in" Dylan parody, "Royal Jelly":
"Mailboxs drip like lamp posts...." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_t8i7-17goY)
The Jack White/Elvis bit was pretty good, too.

my impression exactly. that ending pissed me off.
how could you like the book/story & totally change the essence?

edward scissorhands was a classic masterpiece, yet rogert ebert gave it a huge thumbs down and called it shite when it came out. go see films, read books, and judge for yourself. quit listening to others who need something to talk about.
-
Hmmm, seven critics all liked it. http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/sweeneytodd (http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/sweeneytodd)
Who am I going to trust more, people who get paid to sit through every single movie imaginable and who thus likely have a good point of comparison, or someone who calls himself Marty666?
With a breastfeeding, teething six month old at home, we'll soon be signing up for NetFlix. The movie theater days are over.

Ha yeah...the wife and I never go to the movies anymore. But now the kids are bigger we take them. I see all the great flix now. In the past month or so I've seen Enchanted, Underdog, Alvin and the Chipmunks. Going to see Waterhorse or whatever it's called over x-mas.

Me too....although, if they make one more movie with penguins I swear I'll go and turn all Sid Vicious on the audience.. (My Way video reference) And I love penguins, they're one of my favourite animals.
As for Sweeny Todd - It's Johnny Depp singing, what were you expecting? The only thing worse than his singing is his attempt at an English accent....and I think Johnny Depp is one of Hollywoods more talented actors so not slagging him off.

not that it will necessarily make a difference, but mike patton provided all the voices of the creatures.

I'll make my own decision about the movie after I see it.
I Am Legend was bleck.
The best part was seeing this:

something i haven't figured out yet: when you have a baby, are both parents joined at the hip for the first year? can one not cover for the other for a few hours, so that either mom or dad can go catch a movie, or a concert, etc? i think i'd need the occational evening to myself to preserve my sanity, but i don't have kids so what do i know... i have no doubt that i'll have to revisit this "need" if/when the time comes.
-
Probably too much info but here it goes...
My wife chose to breastfeed exclusively (no bottle, no formula). Our daughter is a voracious eater. Could she go two or three hours without food in the company of just dad? Probably, but my wife would be so worried about it that she probably wouldn't enjoy the movie. Plus, she's not a go to the movies by herself type of person. Part of the pleasure for her is my company, if you can believe that. She does go running and leaves the baby with me, but that's for a shorter period of time.
I'm not lactating, so my presence isn't as crucial. Thus, I'm allowed to go to shows on my own (or with friends), but not movies.

Of course I spend a lot of time with the family, but if one of us wants to do something no biggie.
It was actually easier the first year. My wife breast fed but also pumped, so if she was gone i could feed.
Infants are a piece of cake to take care of though, except for the sleeping issues, having to wake up with them for feeding etc.
Much harder staying home alone with a couple toddlers or pre-schoolers. That's when shit gets nuts. It's fun though. They're a riot most of the time.
I give parenthood 2 big thumbs up. But your life is definately not all yours anymore.

That can be solved by having the baby share the bed or in a cosleeper attached to the bed on mom's side.
The part about the toddler acting nuts...well I'm hoping that having only one will help, and the fact that she's a girl will help, and keeping her away from too much sugar and other shit foods will help...but probably won't.

In my experience, having a toddler is easier because once they go to bed, they're *usually* done for the night, whereas babies have no sense of timing and usually require attention every couple hours at least. I can pretty much plan on my 3-year-old being down for the count by 8:00 pm every night, so I'm able to do movies, concerts, games, exercise, etc. after that. The first year, I barely got out to do anything (my wife is a homebody so she's fine not going out at all). So everything is just perfect exactly the way it is, exactly the way it is.
Oh wait, we've got another kid on the way. Shit. I mean, yay! If the Jesus & Mary Chain, Comets on Fire, or Earthless schedule a DC date any time between May and October, I'll be pissed.
And THAT is what I think of Sweeney Todd.
-
once again, congrats relaxer! and if any of those bands do roll through, i promise to post detailed reviews of how great the show was. i can pick up a t-shirt for you if you want.
-
awesome threadjack!! all the proud boardie parents!!
congrats Relaxer on #2. One was easy for us, two has consistently and repeatedly kicked our ass!! And Chaz is right, you're time is definitely not your own any more.
With our limited nights out we'd rather go for a meal or see a show than see a movie. Excluding kids films which we are seeing more of we've probably averaged 1 movie in a theatre a year for the last 6 years.....Netflix rulezzzzz

Last night's Sweeney Tood was, without a doubt, the worst movie ever. Rest assured I was on the internet within minutes registering my disgust throughout the world.

You pretty much just described my life . The problem is that if you want to do something after bedtime, you are still faced with the reality that the kid will still wake up at 6:00 am saying "Wooo! Wooo! I'm a fire truck!!" (At least that's how it is in my house)

And don't forget the things toddlers say or questions they ask? My boy has me in stitches with some of the stuff he comes out with.

yes, there do seem to be a lot of new parents here. This reminds me of a passage from Moon Scar in the James Havoc book "Satanskin";
"children are the lowest form of creation, mud effigies excreted from stinking hindquarters by those too base or vegetative to produce the true, cerebral offspring of art or science. these wretched parents then abuse and assault the result of their squalid collusion - assassinating liberty."

That's why on weekends the wife and I take turns sleeping in. Sometimes I stay in bed til 8:30! Our sweet little daughter will just get in bed with you in the morning and stay there til you get up for good. But Henry, (The H-Bomb or Hurricane Henry as he's known in our house) is in your face at 6:00 saying "I wanna go downstairs. I want pancakes. I wanna wrestle".
That's my boy. He's such a bad-ass. I love that little stinker.
And yes, as Brennser said, #2 takes things to a completely different stratosphere.
-
I got up at 4 am the other morning because the new puppy had to go out. I sneaked downstairs and was walking down our road when I heard the familiar buzzing of a bicycle, so turned around to see my 5 year old chasing after me on his bike, still in his pyjamas...helmet on of course. I asked him what he was doing up at that time and his reply was, "If you're walking Rosie, I'm riding my bike. That's the deal we made remember"
Couldn't really answer that so off we went on our 4am walk/bike ride!!!!

marty, had you not seen the musical? were you expecting something different? i thought it was a really great take on the original, really well acted (if not the best voices) and tim burton showed a lot of restraint (rare these days)

i feel sad for the catholic church. they were once so dominating--hiding secrets, paying off officials, hording vast wealth for themselves--and now they are nothing more than a dying idea of a business about to be taken over and crushed. just like our country.
it's britney bitch.
