I'll be watching in the AT&T Blue Room.

Some of the set starting times are crazy. Someone going on at 3:15 am?

And Drive By Truckers got shafted with a 12:30pm Friday start time.

given the heat, 3 AM set times are not only understandable but desirable.  then again, that's also probably the only time one can sleep.

enjoy the cops, the frats, the fields of non-freedom, while you listen to musicians and thousands of other jerks who don't belong at a festival with the spirit bonnoaboob used to have.

I will be there.

I always find it funny when festies complain about a Festival going corporate.  The festival was always corporate.  The organizers of it always wanted the big bucks.  They just had to wait until they were big time enough, and then when they were, they took the money and ran.  Only an undergraduate in college would believe it was any other way. Nothing changed, the curtain just got lifted up .

No, nothing changed.  The people who ran the show, always saw in $$$$$$.  Once they got in position to cash in, they did.  They didn't just wake up one day and start thinking that way.  It was all apart of the plan.  Every festival date before this one was so they could eventually get to this one.  Some people are just stupid enough to fall for it, so they cry when it "all of a sudden" goes capitalism on them.  But whatever. Don't go to Bonnaroo.  Stay home and vote for Obama.

I'm not going this year, but wow, in looking at the schedule I see SO many conflicts that I'd encounter if I was going.

I am leaving work to go home and head out in about an hour.  This is going to be my first time there, and i hope it doesnt dissapoint.  I also see a few conflicts, but the main one for me is Tegan and Sara/Minus the Bear.  Also Rilo Kiley/Willie Nelson is a hard one as well.

Alas, I have decided to go.  I will not leave til Thursday after work though, just going for the 2 days. Coming home Sunday cause Sundays lineup bites it  hard.

As far as your first conflict, I'd skip both and head for some place shady.

As far as your second conflict, one is a legend and one will never be. See the legend while you can. That said, his live act seemed to be on the downturn even 10 years ago, so if you have already seen him in your lifetime, you're allowed to go to the other one.

Having seen Rilo Kiley last week I would say to see them unless you feel the need to say you saw Willie.  They were very good live and having seen both live before...i would choose Rilo hands down.

   just my opinion!

I'm going since I live in Nashville. I'm going for free as a guest of the corporate pigs that are putting the festival.

They are nice guys simply trying to make money like any business. Because it's a festival as opposed to anything else, does that mean it's not ok for them to try and make money? They are no different from someone like Seth.

I'm not going this year, as I thought the lineup seemed kind of weak when it was first announced.  Looking at the schedule today though, I'm sort of reconsidering my opinion--there's actually a pretty good number of bands I'd like to see, and some really good looking late night shows.  Sunday is still totally worthless to me though, which I'll use a good excuse for staying home.

MMJ's late night set alone is reason enough to consider going.  Though I don't think it could possibly compare to their late night in '06, I urge every who's going to make catching this show a priority.

Actually I saw him at Lolla a few years ago and he was definitely the highlight of the festival. I do have to say that if he plans to go on at 4 am at VF I would go just to see the pissed off crowd boo and throw horse sh-t at him.

Ok, so prior to writing my Bonnaroo review... let me say that although it was really really late.  Most of us there were under the impression that it was generally Pearl Jams fault for playing forEVER that Kanye West was late.

They played for like 9 hours it seemed and although there was supposed to be 2 1/2 hours between PJ and KW's sets, they apparently needed every minute of that and a few more.

That said, I dont think anyone really cared about PJ playing late or KW delaying, ppl are too fucked up at Bonnaroo to care one way or another really.

OK, Bonnaroo review:

Firstly, Let me say that i loathe camping and the hotels are freaking outrageous on Bonnaroo weekend, add that to driving 10 hours and ....

Friday was pretty damn warm and the bands during the day kinda sucked.  We saw Fiery Furnaces, Minus the Bear...both angered me.  So we spent most of Friday getting ourselves familiar with the festival, as its like way huger than when i last went in 2003.

Once Friday late afternoon came around we split time with !!! and the Raconteurs...both killed.  Metallica was freakin awesome!  Made me think...Metallica concert - Metallica fans = good times!

We heckled Tiesto for 10 minutes and went back to our room and proceded to get zero sleep due to the crazy antics of hotel mates.

Saturday was fucking hot.  But we found the secret to Bonnaroo.  Go to the smaller stages.  They have a knack of picking some pretty decent bands and no one really is over there.

Carney was a highlight as was Electric Touch.

Gogol Bordello is awesome, Pearl Jam played forever and we stayed to see a bit of Kanye...who is such a loser.  but his stage was really sweet once they finally put it together.

We were going to go back to the festival sunday but partying at the hotel was more fun, cheaper and cooler people.

I think i may die this week.  I dont plan on going back to Bonnaroo as its gotten just a bit too huge for this guy.   I have a terrible farmer tan.  Wish i had spent my money on Lollapalooza. (though i only spent about $600 due to a free ticket).

if kanye's MUSIC represented him as a "talent" and not how big and cool his neato "rip off of flaming lips" stage set up was, then he could have walked out there and proved himself as an artist, not a showoff.

Thursday - Caught most of MGMT's set. Not too bad, but i think they would sound way better in a club.  Was way too tired to do anymore, so i called it a night.

Friday - Started off the day with Jose Gonzales. Nice mellow way to start the day.  I stayed at the same tent and then watched Tegan and Sara.  It was a fun set, with a lot of hits played and banter spoken.  I caught the tail end of Minus the Bear, and wished that they could have played at a different time.  I caught part of Les Claypool on the way back to my friends, and he sounded like Les Claypool.  We then went back and grilled until Chris Rock. And thats when the rain started. Funny set.  What else can you say, its Chris Rock.  Metallica were next and rocked the crap out of the fest.  They didnt do two and a half hours like promised, but still did a solid two hours, and mostly of pre Black album tunes.  Next up was MY Morning Jacket.  Bravo.  It was unfortunate about the rain, as we decided to only do half the MMJ set, due to how bad it was getting, and how we wanted to not be sick for the rest of the fest.  They were amazing. The set was covers, Z, and Evil Urges heavy.  Hopefully if they do another one next time, it is good weather.

Saturday - started off with Woods Brothers featuring John Medeski & Kenny Wolleson.  Cool jazzy music, good for first thing in the day.  Next on stage was Mason Jennings.  He impressed, and his style of "brushfire" rock was prefect for Bonnaroo.  I watched him again at a smaller stage, doing a solo acoustic set.  Then we saw Gogol Bordello.  Good energy and too bad it was too hot to dance, and even that didnt deter a lot of people.  We then tried to watch Ben Folds, but the sound sucked and we decided it was time for a grill break anyways.  We came back for Pearl Jam.  I only watched them for two hours, and dont know when they ended, but it seemed like we could hear them in the distance for hours.  they played the classics, and the crowd loved them.  the crowd didnt get into the rants Eddie did though, as i think most people wanted to party and not hear about gas prices.  I then went to Phil Lesh and Friends.  I did two hours of his show and it was probably the best two hours of music that i saw there.  Very long songs though.  20 minutes on average it seemed.  We then went home.  I tried to give Kanye a go, to see the light show (fuck him and his lame tunes, but my friends like him.)  He ran so late, we decided to just go home.  the word around camp the next day was that he sucked anyways.

Sunday - Sunday was really chill. Started off with the Lee Boys and their inspirational funk.  Not really my bag, but good.  Robert Randolphs Family band was next.  I loved them.  I would  see them again in a second.  Next up was An Acoustic Performance by Larry Campbell, Jackie Greene, Phil Lesh & Teresa Williams.  Really mellow, and good tunes to listen to in the shade that was slowly creeping away, leaving us all to burn in the sun.  We finished the festival with Robert Plant and Allison Kraus.  Very boring.  Good music, but boring.  We then left, skipping DCFC since I had just seen them last Monday.

Crowd: Half Hippie, quarter frat boy, and a quarter hipster
 Pros: Great music, good times.
Cons:  Too hot.  Rain.  Having to camp.  Port o Potties.  People not being considerate and stinking up the place.

Dammit, was it really MIA's last show? I was so tired that I napped instead of seeing her set.
Did anyone else see Sigur Ros? Blew my mind. The crowd was so into it too. Amazing.

Thursday:
I saw MGMT.  was wanted to see Vampire Weekend and some of Lez Zeppelin, but with the drive, i was finished.  MGMT was good, but like somebody mentioned above, would probably be even better in a club.
 Friday:
Racontuers were their same kick ass self from a few weeks ago at the Club. Metallica really showed up. Stuck to their classic albums, and really seemed like they wanted to prove to Bonnaroo that it wasn't a mistake bringing them.
My Morning Jack was amazing too. But halfway thru it, i was freezing from the rain and decided to pack it in.  I wish i could have stayed for the whole set.
 Saturday:
Really wanted to see Gogol Bordello, having heard they were one of the best live bands around.  They did not disappoint.  TONS of energy, they just really look like they are having fun up there.  Caught some of Cat Power, Ben Folds, then the end of BB King.  The crowd really seemed like they wanted to give BB King his proper due.  Got up close for Jack Johnson.  Virgin Fest seems that much weaker to me this  year after seeing him. He sucks and has ZERO stage presence.  Pearl Jam kicked ass and seemed like they played forever, which was fine by me.  I just wish Eddie would shut up and play.
 Sunday:
A little bit of OAR.  they suck.  Front Row for Robert Plant.  I didn't think his voice would sound as good as it did.  And I really like how they mix in just the right Zeppelin tracks into their set.  i then saw the very end of Death Cab and called it a Festival.

I also saw some of Willie Nelson, which i think was friday or saturday???  can't remember.

i saw them last night in NYC... abso-fucking-lutely amazing.  indeed mind-blowing.  their sound really lends itself to a big amplified setting.  so beautifully emotional.  i can't speak highly enough of this show.  i'm already making plans to be at both NYC concerts in september (assuming they're still on - they've been taken off TM).

the venue - manhattan center grand ballroom - was great.  provided really nice ambience, both sonic and visual.  ushers up on the balcony were really chill, i was able to move out of my crappy seat and park myself against the wall behind the mixer. i don't think a vinyl flea market in williamsburg could have attracted more hipsters.

DCFC were indeed really good, loved that webcast.  i was surprised to see how much chris walla has taken over the keys.  i think ben only played keyboards on "transatlanticism".  ben's heel-shuffle was kinda ridiculous, boy was trying too hard.

it's understandable that a sigur ros webcast is underwhelming.  there is nothing going on, on stage - i spent most of last night's show with my eyes closed.  watching them on a small screen, with small sound, is bound to be disappointing.  their webcase bored me too, i turned it off... and had my mind blown the following night by their live sound (and sound only).

i agree with a lot of what you wrote, and experienced a lot of it for myself, minus the domestic violence and most of the bands.

I went last year too and felt the vibe was a lot different this time around. I really do cite the ravers from keeping me from enjoying it entirely. Last year, I was able to get enough rest and wake up  when I wanted to stay up late.

why would ravers want to camp with hippies and listen to phil lesh?  stick with WMC ravers.  was it due to Tiesto on the bill? None of the other music was really raver friendly, but i guess when you are hopped up on what they were, anything can be danced to, as i saw a couple of them twirling around while Chris Rock did his thing.

I don't think it matters who is playing when you can go somewhere and get all fucked up. I swear my site was like a cross-section of the scum of the earth: a drug dealer, a domestic battle, the ravers, someone had stuff stolen....

Damn ravers. Oughtta make em pay double! C'mon it's a festival. It takes all kinds of critters. If you don't want that hassle, save and get a room. I did, I consider it one of the best things going and those that can go, should. Just not in the cards for me without Nick. Too much hassle for me to pull off. I do have several friends going from WFWM  so I should get to score some good interviews and live sets from it.

As much as a lame rip-off artist Kanye West is, he really got the shaft from Bonnaroo and I wouldnt hesitate to think this could hurt some of their professional relationships to book certain big name acts in the future.

It also shows what a bunch of losers go to Bonnaroo.  Pearl Jam went on for an extra hour, so wouldnt it be natural to think West would be AT LEAST an hour late?  but no, these fucks were throwing shit 30 minutes after West was supposed to hit the stage.

I can understand if not all the crowd had known that PJ had gone on late but no announcement was made either.

West isnt the only asshole here, the organizers of this festival are as well.

But Kanye is such a complete pile of horse-douche that he will take the blame for it, and I've got no problem with that.

First of all, he's the one who initially moved his set to after PJ's headliner spot. He says its because he wanted his ravey glowsticks to light up, but you know he loved the fact that it meant he was closing the festival.

And, from what I've read, he and his crew didn't exactly hustle to get his spaceship set up, and when he finally did come on, he didn't acknowledge how late he was.

But again, I think the primary reason Kanye will get the blame for this is because he has so quickly built a history of being a jackoff. And if this is the worst insult he's ever gotten, then motherscratcher has had it pretty damn easy.

you cant blame Pearl Jam.  They were supposed to play that stage at the alloted time.  Kanye had them switch his slot AND stage around last minute.  He had from 1:15 to 2:45 to set up.  That is plenty of time. But it took him over three hours to set up?  So why did it take them so long?  And it didnt even seem like anything was happening on stage the while everyone waited.  And that is an hour and a half late, not an hour, which means, if it was PJ's fault, it was still Kanyes for being even extra later.

Quote
West's set was originally scheduled for 8:15 p.m. the night of June 14, but the rapper requested it be moved later in the evening so it was sufficiently dark for his "glow-in-the-dark" performance. But because of the late start, midway through his performance the morning light began to show ?? revealing a substantially thinned-out audience.
And he shouldnt have been there anyway.  How many people came there for Kanye?  Probably none.  And are they going to give him 3 + hours to set up at V Fest?

I have no doubt that Kanye is a whiny dick and is partly to blame.  I wouldn't let PJ off the hook completely though (assuming the article is correct about them playing too long).

PJ was scheduled to play 10:15 to 12:15 which for them is a short set to start with and they were at one point the headliner that day...

What I'm confused about is what was the schedule like before Kayne wanted to be moved from 8:45 to 2:15, seeing as Jack Johnson had to be it in there as well.
Title: Re: Bonnaroo Roll Call
Post by: killsaly on June 26, 2008, 10:38:00 am
Jack Johnson was to play on the mainstage (what stage), and Kanye was supposed to play on the smaller stage (Which stage) at the same time.
I originally thought Kanye switched so he wouldnt have to play the side stage and have to compete with JJ.

go buy and watch "flaming lips - ufos at the zoo" and you'll see what a real band does to be involved with setting up the stage show.  i'm sure kanye watched it, seeing how he now has a spaceship on stage.

Exactly.  I only went to wait for nis show due to my friends being interested in the show.  When we sat down to wait at 2:45, there was hardly anyone there.  I made the comment to my friends that Kanye was going to be pissed because of how few people were in attendance.  I then fell asleep waiting, and when my friend woke me up at 3:30 to leave, there was even less people.

I'm willing to bet it's all  because some 24 hour news network was down there, or picked up some local tv's footage, then looped all day long a couple people pissed off he went on late and the image of kanye sucks written on the porta potties.   now he's blaming everyone but himself because his image got tainted again.

In my opinion, any stage show requiring that much time to set up should not be booked for a festival.

And Kanye becomes more of a conceited douche everyday.

Ive gradually come to the conclusion that alot of really good musiciains are assholes more often than not.  For example Prince, Dylan, Beck if what the Flaming Lips say about him is true.  But its never affected how I view their music.  However, I can't listen to Kanye much anymore.  And his "typed in all caps" blogs piss me off to no end.  As does that random and awkward referwence to the fact that he owns a macbook.

Sorry Literate Roadie, you're correct, Kanye himself was probably not out there humping crates with the rest of the true American roadie heroes. The point was gleaned from multiple accounts, from individuals' blog postings to news accounts of PJ ending at 1:15 am and Kanye starting at 4:30 am, and I pretty much assed out that 3+ hours was an unreasonable delay, especially at a festival. I didn't intend to malign your roadie brethren, you roadie you.

I am not a roadie. my point was that I have been to tons of shows and never been like "look at those roadies, they sure are taking their time putting that stage together"  I mean, i was there and it wasnt like they were shooting dice, smoking cigarettes up there in between sets.

PJ went on late + Kanye is an asshole = its Kanye's fault the whole thing got messed up.

Thing I dont get is if there was so few people waiting for him to play and no one cared about seeing him, why is there such a big deal?

He went on late and no one cared right?

Its amazing to me how terribly offbase news stories really are.  It makes it sound like 80,000 people were calling for Kanye's head. When in reality there was about 8,000 people at that stage, and i'd say about 500 were pissed that he was late.

Just read the blog all the way through.  thought this was funny:

Quote
WE'D SEND THEM OUR SPECS THEN THEY THEY'D SAY OK... THEN THEY WOULD SEND SPECS BACK THAT DIDN'T FIT THE STAGE. WE WERE OBVIOUSLY DEALING WITH FUCKING IDIOTS WHO DIDN'T REALLY HAVE THE CAPACITY TO REALLY PUT ON THIS SHOW PROPERLY
If they didnt have the capacity, how did they pull off a four day, 150 + artist event, with only his issue being the big one?  doesnt sound like bonnaroo was to blame, seems like a KanyeWorld issue.
 And:

Quote
SOMETIMES I GO 2, 3 DAYS W/O SLEEP WORKING ON MY PERFORMANCE... I HAVE TO ICE MY KNEES AFTER EVERY SHOW AND THEY HURT WHEN I WALK THROUGH THE AIRPORT...

What a cry baby.... Some artists work on their "performances"  a lot longer than that, and dont go complaining about it in their blogs.

Didn't Seth say in a Washngton Post interview that Kanye would be playing right after Dylan on the same stage?  If so, I would LOVE to see Dylan bust out an absolute marathon set just to piss Kanye off.

Kanye West blog about Bonnaroo  :)

"NEVER SAY I DIDN'T GIVE MY ALL! NEVER SAY I DIDN'T GIVE MY ALL! THIS SHOWS NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY TO BE GOOD AT SOMETHING THERE WILL BE PEOPLE THERE TO LIE ABOUT YOU AND BRING YOU DOWN! LIKE WAYNE SAYS PLEASE DON'T SHOOT ME DOWN CAUSE I'M FLYING! I'M HURT BY THIS ONE. ALL I CARE ABOUT ARE THE FANS. JUST SAY THIS OUT LOUD IN A ROOM FULL OF PEOPLE, "KANYE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT GIVING A GOOD PERFORMANCE." CAN ANYONE HONESTLY SAY THAT ?????????  HAS ANYONE EVEN TAKEN THE TIME TO AT LEAST DO THE MATH??? BONNAROO SHOULD HAVE RELEASED A STATEMENT IN MY DEFENSE BUT SINCE THEY HAVEN'T LET'S BREAK DOWN THE WALLS ON THIS TRUMAN SHOW AND LET YOU KNOW WHAT REALLY OCCURRED!!! FOR OVER A MONTH WE WENT BACK AND FORTH ON WETHER OR NOT WE COULD EVEN FIT MY STAGE AT THE FESTIVAL. ONE DAY THEY WOULD SAY YES... WE'D SEND THEM OUR SPECS THEN THEY THEY'D SAY OK... THEN THEY WOULD SEND SPECS BACK THAT DIDN'T FIT THE STAGE. WE WERE OBVIOUSLY DEALING WITH IDIOTS WHO DIDN'T REALLY HAVE THE CAPACITY TO REALLY PUT ON THIS SHOW PROPERLY. THEY TRIED 2 GIVE ME A TIME SLOT WERE IT WAS STILL LIGHT OUTSIDE ... I HAVE A LIGHT SHOW, IT'S NOT CALLED GLOW IN THE DARK FOR NO REASON SQUID BRAINS! MY PEOPLE WORKED OUT A COMPROMISED STAGE PLOT AND A 3AM TIME SLOT AND I AGREED. FAST FOWARD TO THE DAY OF THE SHOW. MY PRODUCTION MANAGER TRIED TO LOAD IN FOR 24 HOURS BEFORE I WENT ON STAGE BUT THE FESTIVAL WOULDN'T ALLOW US TO DO ANYTHING UNTILL PEARL JAM LEFT THE STAGE. PEARL JAM ENDED ONE HOUR LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AT THAT POINT WE'RE RACING AGAINST THE SUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AT 4:20AM DON COMES BACK 2 THE BUS AND TELLS ME, "IT WOULD TAKE 45 MORE MINUTES TO PUT ALL YOUR PYRO IN!" I SAY I HAVE TO GET OUT THERE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I STEPPED ON THE FRONT PART OF MY STAGE AND THERE WAS SO MUCH LIQUID ON THE STAGE I COULDN'T MOVE WITHOUT SLIPPING. I HAD TO ADJUST MY WHOLE PERFORMANCE STYLE BECAUSE OF IT. A FEW MORE SONGS IN AND THE SONG WAS ON IT'S WAY UP.. I CUT A FEW SONGS FROM THE SET BECAUSE I WANTED PEOPLE 2 EXPERIENCE STRONGER WHILE THERE WAS STILL SOME DARKNESS TO PERFORM IT IN. I'VE STRUGGLED WITH STRONGER FROM IT'S CONCEPTION. REMEMBER LAST SUMMER WHEN I CANCELED SOME TV APPEARANCES. IT WAS BECAUSE I DIDN'T WANT TO PERFORM STRONGER IN THE DAYTIME. ANYONE WHO CAME TO THE GLOW TOUR CAN UNDERSTAND WHY I WANTED PEOPLE TO SEE IT PROPERLY. IT BROKE MY HEART THAT I COULDN'T GIVE THESE FANS STRONGER IN IT'S GREATEST FORM... what he said does make sense in places and parts.  but he could have said it all in the same amount of space as this post, and a lot more eloquently.

did he actually call people "squid brains??"  that explains everything about kanye west.

I don't think anyone questioned his effort.  I just don't think his brand of self-important douchebaggery connected in the right way with the Bonnaroo crowd. If he couldn't work out logistics for his 'glow in the dark' shit, he should have played a more back to basics set or bailed.  I don't think that many people (i.e. anyone) would have been like 'damn i went all the way to bonnaroo to see kanye rip off daft punk at 3 am and then he just played a regular set.  what a waste.'
