I'm definitely going to be at the Velvet Lounge tonight to see them, seeing as I really dig their debut album. Anyone else planning on going?
-
I will be there, at the door for a while actually (to hand out TourVote propaganda).
-
well now i kinda wish i lived in DC, or at least, hadnt gone there last night. I love elefant. and to think, i was parked RIGHT outside the Vlounge last night. blah.
-
I will be there, hoping there wasn't enough promotion to make it overpacked in there. I still can't believe they are playing such a small venue.
-
Were Pollard goes, I must follow, SIGH.

Mark E, you don't like Elefant?
-
I wasnt so keen at the start. The album I have ripped sounds too much like interpol. Plus, their support slot for interpol was pretty poor too.
But,
I listened to the album yesterday and really ennjoyed it. I think crap American music has finally got the better of me.

You weren't even there

Yes, but more than one person told me about it being a wasted opportunity for them.

I was surprised, too. This is a pretty damned good band that regularly plays much bigger venues, has a hot recent release, is in the Coachella lineup, blah, blah, blah. We'll have to see if they pack the place--promotion seems to have been kind of low-key.

BUSTED!
NME must have told him that.

I liked their performance at 9:30 but it did lack a certain something that makes the album very enjoyable. It will be interesting to see how they fair in a smaller venue...

Here's the question -- what time will they go on tonight? My one problem with Velvet...we could be looking at a midnight start time, which is tough when you, you know, work.
Actually, Elefant's the only band on the schedule. Any ideas?
Also, see the video for Now That I Miss Her (http://www.elefantweb.com/index.php?page=media); it's been on Subterranean.
-
Any word on showtime/cover charge??
Also, for those of you who've been to DC9, would you say it's a better place for a band to play their first gig, as opposed to the Velvet?
-
Will Fico try to shake Pollard's hand???

oh that has been water under the bridge for a long time now, we just shook hands at the South show
-
Hey Guy,
I will be there. I wonder about the set time also. So I think I will go around 10pm.

It might be easier to get the gig at Velvet, but they smoke crack there. DC9 would be a cooler place to play, but either one is a nice first gig.
-
If there is only one band, there is always a slim possibility that they might go on early..... Who knows with the velvet lounge. I plan to get there at 9.30. But I bet Elefant end up coming on around 11.15.
This could be a real test of not drinking in the week, especially with it being a polly $2 vodka night.

Velvet is about half the size.... So for a band doing their first gig, the smaller place might well be better. Judging from some of the support acts, they will let anyone with a guitar play Velvet. I wonder if the other place will be equally discerning?

I just got an email from Elefant's record label that I will on the guest list as a result of a drawing I entered at Olsson's a couple weeks ago.
I think I will be attending now.
-
I got the e-mail from Olsson's too. Anyone know how much tix are so I can bring friends?

No one knows. I expect it will be sub $10.
-
Isn't it usually $7?

Yes, or around there, but it was more than that for the tyde and $15 for the rebirth brass band.
-
Ok, supposedly its $6.
-
So who wants to call me from the Lounge and tell me what time they *say* the band will come on? I'll post it here.... PM me for my cell #...
-
What's the deal? Why doesn't The Velvet Lounge post band start times and admission prices on their web site?
Cheers ;)

they didn't even have a february schedule up until a couple of days ago
-
Oh Medusa, Medusa....Velvet Lounge is far too indie for that. Hell, you can call them at 10:00 and they'll only have a vague notion of when the bands are playing (or what bands are playing). This is DIY!
-
I just spoke to someone at The Velvet Lounge.
They said Elefant go on at 11 p.m. and that the cost is $6.
Hope that Bags and others who needed the info. see this! :)
Cheers
DJ Medusa.
-
you KICK, Medusa. Thanks so much!! Have to decide if I'll head over, but now I know I can make it (you know, after The O.C. and all....). ;)
-
holy f@ckin hell elefant were great...............
just how hot is that guy?
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
and he likes scottish accents..........
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

The show was great---I'm so glad I went! And I really digged the new tracks too. Hopefully it won't be long before album #2...

<Sigh> I'm hating Baltimore more and more all the time.
-
I enjoyed and am happy I went! Cool to meet some people from the board too! :)
Cheers

Pleased to meet you, Medusa and Liberte. Sorry if I was a bit hyper. But I thought that was one hell of a show.
They played the video that Bags posted as the second song.
Yes Lulu, the guy was really prrrrrrrrrretty. I wonder how he could tell you were Scottish? RRRRRRRRRRRR.
But the highlite was seening Pollard getting hugged not once, but twice by the hot lead singer. I got jealous.
-
dammit. Oh well, I made a judgement call and was in bed and sleeping by 11:30...

I get called that all the time.
They only have one album, it was unlikely they would play all night. Plus no openner. I can imagine many local bands would give up their overrated bassist to play the velvet on such a full night.
-
Was it packed? Did they go on about 11?

Ding ding DING.
There were people queing out of the door at around 9.30. But it wasnt too bad upstairs. Infact I would say perfect after the two chatty cathies moved away from us.
-

more people then I have ever seen there, even the staff were telling people it was way more people than normal, they went on at 11
-
Hell of a show, especially at the price (which will likely be a lot higher the next time that band hits town). I think most folks would have been happy to see them play a little longer, but they packed a lot of energy into an hour set.
It was fun to put faces to a few of your names, too.
-
Thanks for the heads up.
They're playing here in 2 Weeks and Smackette has threatened my life if I don't take her to see them this time. She thinks he's purty too....
New stuff's great too - I'm glad to hear I don't have to hear the entire "Sunlight makes me paranoid" album live again.
-
By the way, when I was looking for info on the show I saw on Monday, I stumbled across this and thought you would enjoy it.
From the Journal kept on Elefant's web site:
February 19th - DC
What a fun show! It is so satisfying to just make a loud racket in a small, oversold by 60 people, sweaty room. It is as good of a reason to start a band as any. We also did a 4 song recording for XM satellite radio earlier this morning. We did Misfit, Tonight Let's Dance, Sunlight Makes Me Paranoid, and The Clown. Keep an ear out for it if you can. Thank you Tobi and the engineers at the studio for making us feel so welcome.
So long D.C. see you soon.
xoxo

I missed that show (and regret it) but that's an awesome catch, smackie...You serve even from the far coast...
