I anticipate this is going to be the most popular thread ever. Trying to put together a playlist and was hoping you all could help. Here's what I got so far:
Jonathan Richman - New England
The Softies - Holiday in Rhode Island
Judy Garland with Bing Crosby - Connecticut (hi-larious, by the way)
Billy Bragg - A New England

Fountains of Wayne -- Valley Winter Song
-
The Standells - Dirty Water
Government Issue - Connecticut

wbcn in boston used to always play this as part of their theme music...this was in the 80's and very early 90's before they changed format and became sucky:
Dirty Water
THE STANDELLS
(Ed Cobb)
(spoken:)
I'm gonna tell you a story
I'm gonna tell you about my town
I'm gonna tell you a big bad story, baby
Aww, it's all about my town
Yeah, down by the river
Down by the banks of the river Charles (aw, that's what's happenin' baby)
That's where you'll find me
Along with lovers, fuggers, and thieves (aw, but they're cool people)
Well I love that dirty water
Oh, Boston, you're my home (oh, you're the Number One place)
Frustrated women (I mean they're frustrated)
Have to be in by twelve o'clock (oh, that's a shame)
But I'm wishin' and a-hopin, oh
That just once those doors weren't locked (I like to save time for
my baby to walk around)
Well I love that dirty water
Oh, Boston, you're my home (oh, yeah)
Because I love that dirty water
Oh, oh, Boston, you're my home (oh, yeah)
Well, I love that dirty water (I love it, baby)
I love that dirty water (I love Baw-stun)
I love that dirty water (Have you heard about the Strangler?)
I love that dirty water (I'm the man, I'm the man)
I love that dirty water (Owww!)
I love that dirty water (Come on, come on) [fade]

Pixies -- U-Mass

Yeah, but it still works. After all, that's what New England is (or was intended to be).

Willie Alexander??Mass. Ave.
Magnetic Fields??Long Vermont Roads (though Vermont appears only in the first line and the song then meanders across the country)
Modern Lovers??Roadrunner; Government Center
The Reducers??Rocks [many of the songs by this wonderful punk-blues band, still around after 25 years, are about the oxymoronic greater New London (Conn.) area, but this one actually says so. Chorus: Rocks/sticking out of the ocean/Rocks/New London hardly ever does/Rock?. ]
I agree that ??A New England? belongs in even if Bragg didn??t exactly mean it that way; you might consider the Too Much Joy cover (plus they kind of swallow the ??A? in the lyric for much of it)
Surely someone??s done a cover of that treacly ??Please come to Boston for the springtime?.?

Just curious... What's with all the playlist posts recently?

Not a song per se, just a hysterical message.
Sonic Youth - Providence

Tons of Reducers song samples are at http://www.thereducers.com/audiofiles/ (http://www.thereducers.com/audiofiles/). Try Let's Go, No Ambition, Better Homes and Gardens, Scared of Cops, Bums I Used to Know. They play mostly around eastern Conn. with an occasional jaunt to NY, but did a Japan tour after an old song on a new compilation started a boomlet for them over there.

That line's from "Rock n' Me"
Touchin' down in New England town
Feel the heat comin' down
I've got to keep on keepin' on
You know the big wheel keeps on spinnin' around
And I'm goin' with some hesitation
You know that I can surely see
That I don't want to get caught up in any of that
Funky shit goin' down in the city
-
Carly Simon, The Wives are in Connecticut
