Which show should I attend tomorrow?
-
dirtbombs..
(I'm on the fence)
-
erasure
-
Mountain Goats
-
no contest.... Mountain Goats
-
i like both bands and am having a tough time deciding myself.
i'm leaning towards the dirtbombs, because they are a great live band, and it's rare to see some snarling garage rock at iota.
-
i'll be at the mtn goats. i saw him last time he was in town-- an awesome double bill with Vanderslice-- and it was tons of fun. He's the kind of performer that has a conversation with the audience.
-
goats. i should go. but won't
-
I'm going to the Dirtbombs show. You are always guaranteed a good time with them.
-
Is John Darnielle (http://www.amiannoying.com/view.aspx?ID=10945) more annoying than Connor Oberst (http://www.amiannoying.com/view.aspx?ID=8649)?
-
is dirtbombs the band with two drummers? or am I thinking of a different group?
-
Is John Darnielle more annoying than Connor Oberst?
not even close.
and yeah, plahniukkubrick, the dirtbombs do have two drummers.
-
If I wasn't on a redeye flight back from LA last night/this morning, I'd be at the Dirtbombs tonight. The show at Black Cat in the fall of '03 was positively scorching. Even if you're not a fan, they are a tremendous live band.
-
So, ggw, what's your decision?
-
If it weren't for the fact that I'm stuck in Baltimore between work days, I'd be at The Dirtbombs show. Keep missing them and I know that I'd really enjoy them.
-
Dirtbombs would probably have been the right choice for those considering both. Shearwater was great until the last song when they got wanky. Mountain Goats had what seemed like a short set and lacked the energy of the last show until the last song.
-
I thought it was a topic about some new WMD that the Pentagon had dreamed up so Hee-haw could invade some other poor defensless country.
-
I ended up choosing the Dirtbombs. Very happy with my decision.
They played 45-50 minutes of loud, dirty, rhythm-heavy, guitar-squealing rock'n roll at full speed followed by the requisite trashing of the drumsets. A small but enthusiastic crowd attended. It was great to see them at iota.

i went to the mountain goats and was quite content with my decision. it was fun. vanderslice joined 'em on stage. they did two encores. the crowd was really into it, and they were hillarious with their banter.

I think they had planned that, set would have been way too short without it. And the setlist they did choose for the night wasnt the best. Very few older songs.

i'll give you that. i was actually somewhat floored that they didn't play palmcorder yanja, which was their awesome encore last year...

Lamb was that the one with the layover in Cinci?
-
Yes, a great Dirtbombs show. Loud and rockin! Definitely the fuel I needed for the rest of the week.

Dirtbombs: Here's Mud In Your Ear
The Washington Post
Thursday, May 5, 2005; C05
Issuing a singles collection after just a decade of recording might seem a little premature, but for the Dirtbombs it's overdue: a double-disc set due at the end of this month collects a staggering 52 tracks.
The only figure that might approach that prodigious total is the number of people who have passed through the Detroit band since Mick Collins made it his full-time concern in 1995.
The singer-guitarist (who formerly led the Gories) had the standard two-drummer, two-bassist Dirtbombs lineup behind him at Iota Tuesday night, and though the faces of his backup players often change, the stew of garage rock, soul and Motor City muscle sounded as timeless as ever.
<img src="http://media.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/photo/2005/05/04/PH2005050402326.jpg" alt=" - " />
Even those familiar with the Bombs' extensive catalogue -- which also includes three full-length albums -- might have had trouble differentiating songs in the rapid-fire set, but it was impossible to mistake the twitching, pummeling groove that flattened everything in its path. So whether Collins was howling his own garage-soul visions ("Underdog," "Here Comes That Sound Again") or scraping the insides from versions of Curtis Mayfield's "Kung Fu" and ESG's "My Love for You," the band rumbled like a runaway garbage truck. Collins's slashing guitar leads were the flash point, but the double-barrel rhythm section did the dirty work.
It was fitting, then, that the hour-long set ended with a furious rave-up and the kind of garage rock scene that is pure Dirtbombs: a stage littered with cymbals and drums that had been kicked over in the climactic melee.

I like when band members have blogs. It's quite interesting to hear that perspective. (http://www.livejournal.com/users/diskothiq/)
