Title: boardie bike ride?
Post by: jkeisenh on March 21, 2005, 04:22:00 pm
blame the sunny spring day for these thoughts, but...
i know alot of us are bikers.  i was wondering if some saturday we all may want to ride somewhere in the afternoon and then go to the asylum saturday high life countdown?

i would propose april 9, which is surprisingly just 2 weeks away, and i would propose meeting at a metro station (for those needing metro to get into town) and riding an easy 30 mi or so.

 anyone?

mi= miles or minutes.

weekends are normally set aside for mountain biking for me. I can be persuaded into doing an old dominion ride or something, but OD is more like 50 miles round trip. But they have warm flat beer, Ahhh tastes like home.

i was thinking 30 miles, so that we don't scare people off.  (I like to clock about 75 mile days on weekends, but for the sake of being social, will do less)

I'm assuming y'all mean bicycles. Correct me if I am wrong. if you mean motorcycles, though, I might tag along!

ok, let's just make this a spin-n-suds.  as in, we bike around for fun a little bit and then drink, drink, drink.  does that sound more like it?

and, if there are boardies who are bike-less, i have some extras...

is this what ggw stands for? (http://www.engineering.uiowa.edu/~lbourgeo/ggw.jpg)

DC - Mount Vernon is 16 miles each way.

the most awesomest bike ride, in my opinion, is a loop where you take the Capital Crescent Trail from Georgetown, up into Maryland, and then across Bethesda and Chevy Chase to Rock Creek Park, and down Beach Drive back into the City.  It's about 22 miles, but it's easy to extend it further.

TV actor Don Johnson had written a number of songs with "The Allman Brothers" - including "Crazy Love" and "Can't Take It With you."

Odds are, I'll be working in Bethesda that day in a building literally right next to that trail. If you ride that trail, maybe I could take a break and meet up with you for a drink, lunch, whatever.

Speaking of bikes...  My kids did well this last xmas with new bikes.  I got one of each of these through a friend who owns a bicycle business for $200 total including shipping, assembly, etc.

 HONDA Carve BMX  (http://www.hondabicycles.com/prodimages/63820-4L.jpg)

I guess they did well huh?

Was the business Wal-Mart?

If you like your kids and they like their bikes, next time you might want to think about getting them half way decent bikes.

Why?

I thought Huffys used to be better than they are now?
Title: Re: boardie bike ride?

nope.  huffy has always been the target/walmart/kmart brand-- they were never bike shop quality bikes.

I had a Huffy when I was a kid. It did me fine.

Many families don't have the money to spend $300+ on a child's bike, though maybe they would if they drank beer from a can.

Not to disagree, but:

 http://www.huffybikes.com/heritage/ (http://www.huffybikes.com/heritage/)

The 1973 Scout racer bike looks way more functional and usefull than the current "dual suspension wonderbikes" that wal-mart now sells. I dont think back then they were engineered quite so brutally to a price point. I bet a huffy in the 70's was the same price in dollars as one today, if not more.....
Title: Re: boardie bike ride?
Post by: Herr Professor Doktor Doom on March 23, 2005, 12:19:00 pm
Huffy bikes have always sucked... maybe less than they do now.  They're built of cast iron and they weigh a freakin' ton.

The thing about buying someone a crappy-ass bike -it can make the difference between someone learning to love biking and hating it.  So it's worth a little extra dough, and you really don't need to spend a fortune.

The same goes for guitars by the way...

You can get a quality kids bike for way less than $300.  But when you pay $200 for two bikes, one being a "full suspension mtb", and think your kids made out good, you are mistaken.  That full suspension bike is dangerous simply because it's designed to look like a bike that can safely take abuse but would crumble if ridden off of anything higher than a curb.  Plus those crap bikes are usually poorly assembled which makes them even more dangerous.
Title: Re: boardie bike ride?

all kids should have a bike, no matter what the price you pay for it. Personally I say the cheaper the better to begin with. If the've never ridden a Giant/Trek/Gary Fisher or whatever name designer brand you want to throw in there....how will they know if their bike sucks or not? If they enjoy riding, as every kid should, then they can get a better bike next time. If the bike ends up collecting spiders in the garage then you haven't wasted a fortune, because we all know the resale value of bikes is awful.

*this is were, if my dad was still alive, he'd be telling us how he had to go to the scrap heap and find bits to build his own first bike when he was a kid.*

I won a Huffy one time.....it was okay until I bought my Trek 850, then realized what a total piece of shit my Huffy was.

Yeah and I bet when it was done it was better than that piece of honda shit.

Your really are a tight git aren't you. You bemoan not riding a boutique bike, but dont you have an ultegra equipped 853 framed road bike?  :p

Kids bikes have poor resale because most of them are shit to begin with. If you buy an OK bike it will have ok resale and might not break hurting the rider and putting them off cycling forever.

My point was quite simple, but still missed by some dopes  ;)  I was just saying don't waste a fortune on a fancy bike until you know your child is going to love biking....and I was in my 40's before I got to spend a handsome fee for a bike so not being a hypocrit.

But my point is if you dont "waste a fortune" on a decent bike your child might never love cycling.

The difference between spending $200 at the local bike shop and $100 at wal-mart is vast.

Me too. I was able to push it to the top of the biggest hill in the neighborhood and ride it down really fast. That's all I wanted my bike to do at the time and I was happy with it. And I abused the hell out of it too so an expensive bike would probably have been a bad idea for me. But knowing what I know now about bike quality and safety, if I had kids, I would be getting them something better than a Huffy.

Well, that's a silly question.

I return to my 2pm, April 9 (Sat), meet at, say, Woodley Park Metro.  We can finish up with $.25 pints of high life at Asylum at 5pm.

This is just a proposal.  Other ideas?

ok, ok, so my job is sending me to a meeting in Ohio this Saturday.  that and this thread died.

Would folks be ok with a Saturday, April 23 ride?
How about meeting at 3pm in Dupont Circle.  (suburbanites: take your bike on metro to get there!) We can ride down to the mall, around hanes point, and then up rock creek to Adams Morgan, finishing with $.25 pints of high life at Asylum at 5pm.

In case of rain, just meet at Asylum at 5pm.

Anyone who needs to borrow a bike, let me know.

 Sound OK?  Changes?  Ideas?

i'm seriously considering purchasing a bike. i now have a secure place to store it at night and work in bethesda right off the crescent trail entrance. last time i owned a bike was in college when i bought a used cannondale from a friend and realized later that the thing was a wee bit too big for me. oh, well...lesson learned.

anyway, recommendations would be appreciated...i mainly see myself riding in the city or on trails in the area (doubt i'll be doing any mountain biking anytime soon) so if you could keep that in mind when suggesting bike makes/models.

i know there is a bike shop on M st. across from the key bridge and one off columbia rd. in adams morgan.  are there any other stores you would suggest?

naturally, i recommend city bikes.   ;)
for mostly road and a little trail riding, i recommend jamis coda, specialized sirrus, cannondale 400 (from the road warrior series), or bianchi boardwalk.  All have road-sized wheels, all but the bianchi have seatpost suspension, and all will be fast, lightweight, flat-bar commuters.

Nope.  the nice thing about bikes these days is smaller frames = shorter top tubes.  fitting bikes for women is primarily about getting a nice short top tube.

that's good to know. i've heard good things about city bikes' service too. maybe i'll stop in there later this week.

i was so upset about my cannondale. i didn't realize how a couple of inches would make such a difference. the guy i bought it from was not too much taller than me, but enough to make the bike completely uncomfortable to ride.

i live in glover park just north of georgetown so i'm not exactly sure where i'd get on the trail.  rock creek park runs a few blocks behind my house...does the trail run through there? i haven't explored back there since i moved into my apartment.

thanks for posting that link...the maps are really helpful. unfortunately, the trail in glover-archibald park (which leads to the capital crescent) is only a foot trail. guess i'd have to ride down to georgetown on foxhall or another route and hop on there too.

A long lunch would be great, but I'm out for beers...I'm heading to Ocean City for another glorious round of wedding plans.  But a Happy Hour in the near future (maybe next week?) would be excellent.  Maybe we could convince econo to show up as well.  He's been known to make the long trip outside of DC limits for a drink or two.

Is it too bad going up and down Wisconsin, normally the traffic is moving so slow/stopped that it does not seem to pose too much of a threat to a cyclist.....

Its a pisser having to cycle the in the wrong direction to where you want to go, but the capitol crescent trail is pretty great for commuting on. Just watch out for dogs on 30 foot leads.

No just four, no huffies:

 Salsa ala carte

 Bontrager (made by Trek)

 Both geared Mountain bikes

 Kona explosif

running as a magic gear single speed

 Surly Cross Check

fixie with WTB dirt drop bars and cyclocross tyres because I keep forgetting to put the slicks back on. It is my commuting bike and it is sitting 3 feet behind me acting as a clothes rack.

That gay thread photo reminds me...there was a band I saw recently that had a bass or guitar player that reminded me a lot of Markie...  He had the same general look and nearly the exact same head bob thing when he's digging something but not full on jumping.

It was one of the guys from Soundtrack of our Lives....

It is possible that I could be convinced in the future to journey out to Bethizzy.

As for the boardie bike ride... My bike is out of commission due to a stripped hub.  I was riding down Summit and my cog slipped.  I turned into an apartment parking lot dragging my feet on the ground as much as possible.  Hit a curb and tumbled over the handlebars onto a grassy knoll.

Don't have the $120 lying around just yet.  Talked with Ben a day or two ago and he said to stop by, but I might have to wait a while on that.

Ben isn't selling his wheelset-- just his frame at this point-- last i checked.  But it's a nice frame.

Yeah.  Track wheels are really expensive-- the hubs are what do it, and it sucks.

he's selling his gray steamroller-- it's too big for him-- and replacing it with this year's graphite black one.
