A bit of a rhetorical question I realize... Decided to get myself one of the new fangeled gaming devices and am looking for a little advice. Xbox vs PS2 vs ???
My primary query is in which systems has the most "adventure" titles available. In the past the games I've liked most to play were King's Quest, Leisure Suit Larry and Zelda. Not so interested in strictly Shooter or Sports video games.
Also curious as to whats out there in regards to "adventure" title...
thanks!

Are there are any other worth Gamecube suggestions? and playing retro atari games was partly what prompted the desire for a gaming system.

If it's just retro you desire, get a GameBoy Advance SP. Tons of retro games on that.
-
Gamecubes best selling point is the resident evil franchise.... The new on (not sure if it out yet) looked fantastic. But the mario games always look like fun.
Personally I cannot imagine wanting to do anything else than play halo.....
-
xbox all the way man.
it owns every game console in stats, and games are pretty sweet too.
xbox has retro atari, or rather atari anthology with 85 atari games.
xbox also allows you to rip cds to its HD and then play them instead of the background music in games.
here is a full list of xbox action titles:

game cube is the cheapest and has zelda however if you really love zelda that much, but who wants a system that looks like a freaking barney purse?
downfall to ps2 they still want you to buy a multi-tap for more then 2 people to play. also the new ps2 is very small but doesnt have the HD capability as the other one, it could also over-heat if you look on other forums.
downfall to xbox is size, its a bit big, however u never need to buy a memory card. also, if you want to play online you have to pay 50 dollars a year, but it is all broadband unlike ps2 where 56k'ers get on and lag you incredibly badly.
downfall to gamecube is probably that graphics arent as well as ps2 or xbox, and you do have to buy an internet adapter which the game cube sits on. also, it has a lot of "kiddie" titles.
i have an xbox, its awesome. my friend and i bought a mod chip for his and even got linux running on it.
it just comes down to preference really, and which one has the most titles you want. just look around at ebgames.com because they all have their pros and cons.
EDIT: I forgot to point out, halo 2 sucks me. It's just like the first halo there's barley any variation. HL2 owns Halo2 in everything. The End.
-
I would get an xbox, but there are more games out for the PS2
here are gamespots top rated games
http://www.gamespot.com/misc/top100_score.html?tag=gs_lnav_topscore (http://www.gamespot.com/misc/top100_score.html?tag=gs_lnav_topscore)
but I really only play halo 2, occasionally a sports game
splinter cell is pretty good as well

yeah that multiplayer is just like halo 1, do you think anybody plays halo 2 for the campaign any more
-
Doubtfull. Although I don't understand all the big hype about all that great things Halo2 offers. The new campaign's story is supposed to be weak, and gameplay is just like the first Halo.
Yes, it was good, yes it was so good Microsoft bought out the company that produced it, but there is no way it was good enough for people to buy a whole gaming system over it.
-
For adventure games, I'd go with the PS2.
Overall system, I'd recommend Xbox.
Not many worthy exclusives on the Gamecube.

Liar!
More PS2s have been sold and PS2 has more games.

Yeah, but for adventure titles, wouldnt the gamecube be a fair choice?

the xbox clearily is a nice system, but head-to-head play over the internet really isn't a priority for me. the xbox might be of interest because it has Sid Meier's Pirates being ported to it. Kosmette is a big fan of Civilization from the good old days, but that doesn't seem to be headed to a console anytime soon.
I'm intrigued by Grand Theft Auto, but would rather play other types of games first.
i like the connectivity of the gamecube with the gameboy players and games.
-
The consoles are so cheap now. If you have a couple of games on a console you want to play, just buy the thing. Why not just be prepared to buy more than one box?
You can get all three of the systems for less than I paid for my xbox.

someone please hip me:
what's this whole "Halo" phenomenon going on?

It's a first person shooter with good graphics. You see through your characters eyes and shoot everything that moves (teammates excepted).

unless markie is on your team, then you will be sure to shoot your teammates

Yes, PS2 came out a year earlier and has more titles. When I said stats, I meant, pixels, speed, graphics, etc...

kinda like "goldeneye" from nintendo64...but much better?
-
@ SAL
Halo is as everyone said a first person shooter, with outstanding graphics and decent physics.
It was one of the first titles for xbox that got released from a small studio called Bungie Studios. Microsoft was so impressed with it, they bought it.
Halo just is really an average FPS but with some decent twists, nice weapons, and big maps. It is fun to play.
Recently, the sequel came out, with an added online multi-player, some updated weapons. There is a big craze for it because for some reason people who think it's the new gaming crack are on crack and don't realize how it's not that great of a game.
Everyone just gets Halo2 for online multiplayer because the first one lacked it, and honestly, it is a lot like the first one.
EDIT: Yes, you can draw a comparison with Golden Eye except add vehicles, bigger maps, and alien enemies.
-
So has anyone played Metroid Prime?

Don't bother buying a console

DLA rules. thanks.
i'm considering buying one of these gaming consoles too. i was pretty much set on PS2, but this Halo thing sounds really good (we would play 'goldeneye' for hours in college).

Microsoft bought bungie about 2 years before halo was released. It was initially going to be a Mac game. It follows on from the marathon series.

the online play is very much like playing games like godeneye with people in the same room. Using the headset and being able to talk shit during games is great.
You need to have high speed internet though...

That's not it. Here's a real vidclip (http://binnes.funhumour.com/videos/1310.asf) of Halo 1.

Outside of the Zelda and RE series, the Gamecube doesn't really offer anything different in the Adventure genre that you cannot play on the PS2 or the Xbox.

Great game.
It's the only thing I still play on my Gamecube.

I concur. The sequel looks similar to the original in terms of graphics quality, but they've added a multiplayer game, which gives it some more depth.
I personally own a PS 2 and a Gamecube, and I can honestly say that I rarely if ever play my PS 2 anymore. Both are good systems, but if you're looking for adventure/rpg style games I'd probably go with the Cube. The new slim design PS 2 heats up too quickly from what I've heard, and while it may not have all the games that PS 2 would make available to you, they're banking more on quality. Some good titles:
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Tales of Symphonia
Eternal Darkness
the Resident Evil series
Metroid Prime/Metroid Prime 2
Paper Mario 2
Soul Caliber 2
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles (downside: I think you need a Game Boy Advance to play this one)
The Metal Gear games
If you're into import games, there's a lot of good stuff coming out across the ocean that never gets released here as well, and all you need is a freeloader to boot the games on an NTSC based system.
Good hunting..
-
right now the gamecube seems to be the place to start for me... and as xmasie says with what these things cost these days there is no reason not to also consider an xbox at a future date
-
what about the joystick; who still plays with that??
-
My wife, if I'm a good boy.

but seriously, if you have the ps2 . . . stay away from the new game "fight club"; man, does it suck. they waited this long to release a game after the movie, and this is what we get? dorky, tekken ripoff.
-
there are fantastic games for each system, however if you are willing to wait you will be able to get the new xbox2

i have an xbox and am happy with it, however there are quite a few titles that are only for playstation, wich i belive is microsofts downfalla, then again microsoft only wanted a part of the market, and did not plan on making any money for at least 5 years. so i predict that the games for the xbox will only get better, as microsoft trys to get a slice of the pie
