if the lead singer's voice were just a BIT better, this would be high up on my top 10 ... the music is awesome, but the guy's voice is just crappy

Haven't put a list together yet, but I don't see Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins on anybody's list and that's a crime.

my list wasn't a "best of", just my favorites ... i haven't gotten my hands on the jenny lewis CD yet
-
The Elected - Sun, Sun, Sun is likely in my top 10 as well.
-
I've only bought three albums this whole year, SY's Rather Ripped, Paul Simon's Surprise, and Ghostface's Fishscale, and they're all pretty good.
-
Neko Case - Fox Confessor
Jenny Lewis/Watson Twins - Rabbit Fur Coat
Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
Josh Ritter - The Animal Years
Drive-By Truckers - A Blessing and a Curse
Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
Rosanne Cash - Black Cadillac
Cat Power - The Greatest
Beth Orton - Comfort of Strangers
Disappointed - Josh Rouse, Subtitulo - Not horrible, but not as good as previous two CD's.
-

If you like Camera Obscura, I'm pretty sure you'll like Jenny Lewis with The Watson Twins. Very similar, yet different. JL is a little more country, but they're of the same vein.
I prefer the JL album, but I put the O in country so what do could you expect?
-
The new ones from Neko Case, Buzzcocks, and Sonic Youth have all been great. I also picked up Be Your Own Pet at the Sonic Youth show and that was pretty good too. I didn't like Pretty Girls Make Graves-Elan Vital at first but I'm really getting around to it. Like a lot of people, I thought Tool was a let down.
-
I'll play...
10. Tied: Racontuers - Broken Boy Soliders AND Jens Lekman - Oh You're So Silent, Jens
09. Danielson - Ships
08. Cold War Kids - Up In Rags (ep)
07. Flaming Lips - At War with the Mystics

not to pick nits, but weren't these all 2005? i would have put Jens at #2, and Art Brut probably around #9 if they were '06 releases
-
i don't have a top 10 list, but the albums that come to mind are cursive's "happy and hollow," belle & sebastian's "the life persuit," gnarls barkley's "st. elsewhere" and the new johnny cash record that comes out tomorrow is absolutely gorgeous.
-
No particular order:
Rabbit Fur Coat - Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins
Cold War Kids EP
Mothers Sisters Daughters and Wives - Voxtrot
The Life Pursuit - Belle and Sebastian
Ships - Danielson
Gulag Orkestar - Beirut
Return to Cookie Mountain - TV on the Radio
I know that last one hasn't come out yet, but good god, once it does, it will jump to the top of my list. The leak sounds amazing.
Don't know if these are the "best" per se, but certainly the ones I've listened to over and over.
Disappointments:
The Raconteurs
The Strokes . . I so badly wanted that album not to suck. For some reason I keep breaking it out and trying to like it.
-
woops. i almost forgot the new johnny cash. i listened to it earlier today. great record.
-

It's an '06 release in the States, but I would have included it if I didn't own in in '05 as well (thank you, emusic).
-
Tool might have been a little dissapointing, but it by far has the best packaging for a CD I think I've ever seen.
Pearl Jam was not dissapointing, IMO. Not by a longshot.
-
1. Sunset Rubdown - Shut Up I Am Dreaming
2. Islands - Return to the Sea
3. Man Man - Six Demon Bag
4. Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies
-
anybody hear the new tom verlaine records? how are they?

The new Phoenix is great, probably their best yet.

yes and yes.

I'm a little surprised no one has mentioned Band of Horses' "Everything All the Time" or "The Dust of Retreat" by Margot & the Nuclear So-and-So's.
I gather I'm the only one around here who isn't disappointed by The Raconteurs' album....
-
10.Panic! At The Disco - A Fever You Can't Sweat Out
9. Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
8. Tilly And The Wall - Bottoms Of Barrels
7. The Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldier
6. Portugal. The Man - Waiter: "You Vultures!"
5. The Kooks - Inside In/ Inside Oout
4. I Am X - The Alternative

Noo, I'm not disappointed by The Raconteurs' album, either. I didn't expect the second coming of jesus, or anything. For what it's worth, it's a fun little rock record. That does the trick enough for me.
Also, Margo & The Nuclear So and So's put together an awesome record.
The Elected's Sun, Sun, Sun, and Jenny Lewis' record probably round out my top two. And I as well am really diggin' Be Your Own Pet.
-
I think Babyshambles' Down in Albion is surprisingly good.
-
generally agree with some of the selections posted here
so far I like
Belle and Seb
Wolfmother
Margot
Neil Young
Campbell/Lanegan
Howe Gelb
Destroyer
Alejandro
Neko
slightly dissapointed in
Twilight Singers
Arctic Monkeys
lots of stuff I need to listen to more
Calexico
-
Hmmm, no one has mentioned Mates of State's new album. My favorite record of the year, by far. Though Band of Horses, Tilly and the Wall, B.Fleishmann, TVOTR and Ladytron all put out very good albums.
I still have piles upon piles of stuff to hear though...
-
Love:
Morrissey - Ringleaders... - So good I want to put my fist through a window
Walkmen - Hundred Miles Off - No barnburners like The Rat or Thinking of a Dream I Had, but much more consistent. Great album.
Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere - 'Last Time' is a certified nut-tingler
Neko Case - Fox Confessor...
Ambulance - EP - Beautiful tunes. If they only translated better live.
Muse - Black Holes and Revelations - Muse's 'Be Here Now' or 'OK Computer'? They certainly went balls out on this one. Only given it one listen, but I was blown away.
Like:
Secret Machines - Ten Silver Drops - Decent, but no standouts like their previous
Strokes - First Impressions - I know theyre not cool anymore, but its pretty damn good.
Wolfmother - Standout singles but not consistent
Arctic Monkeys
The Streets - Trying to decipher whether I am just into him because I'm a bit of an anglophile or whether I legitimately dig the sound. I still dont have an answer but I like the album either way.
Suck:
Pearl Jam - Some songs I not only just dont care for, I actually want to punch Eddie Vedder in the face. Just completely devoid of any melody at times.
Snow Patrol - As a very large fan of their last album and show at the 930, Ill admit it. They've become the Goo Goo Dolls. 'Put some Sufjan Stevens on'?!
-

I'm with you!!
Add [for me]: Josh Ritter - Animal Years; Glen Phillips - Mr. Lemons (LP), Unlucky 7 (EP)
-
I'm glad 2 people mentioned Islands. That CD is awesome.
Then in no order
The Dresden Dolls - Yes, Virginia...
Boris- Pink
Liars - Drum's Not Dead
and I know its not out yet but
Thom Yorke - The Eraser
-
so far...
People in Planes
The Lovely Feathers
Liam & Me
Elefant
Phoenix
-
forgot the essex green

I'll add:
Serena Maneesh - Zuruck
High Violets - To Where You Are
Loose Fur - Born Again in the USA
-
Without a doubt my top 2 are...
</font>- <font size="2" face="Arial, Veranda">Fleeting Joys - "Despondent Transponder"</font></li>
- <font size="2" face="Arial, Veranda">The Daysleepers "Hide Your Eyes" (EP)[/b]</font></li>
<font size="2" face="Arial, Veranda">
Not only are they about 2 of my favorites for the year but apparently, many others in the know agree.
Fleeting Joys have completely sold out of their debut full length in only about 3 or 4 months time and are in the process of creating new music and working out deals for future releases.
The Daysleepers (from my inside source) have done phenomenally well, especially for DIYers, and have (hmmmm....not allowed to reveal too much here) let's say, some major attention on them. They too have new works in the making. Some of their future work will be produced by Robin Guthrie of The Cocteau Twins.
My remaining 8, well, I need more time to reflect on that since there's a lot that I like. Probably would include...
</font>- <font size="2" face="Arial, Veranda">God Is An Astronaut - "A Moment Of Stillness" (EP)</font></li>
- <font size="2" face="Arial, Veranda">The Flies (Sean Cook's new band) - (s/t)</font></li>
- <font size="2" face="Arial, Veranda">The Black Angels - "Passover"</font></li>
- <font size="2" face="Arial, Veranda">The December Sound - (s/t) (EP)[/b] (Actually from late 2005)</font></li>
- <font size="2" face="Arial, Veranda">Daturah - (s/t)</font></li>
- <font size="2" face="Arial, Veranda">The Morning After Girls - "Prelude: EP's"[/b]
(I don't care that it's from last year. It didn't get much attention here until this year and it's part of the soundtrack of my 2006)</font></li>

The High Violets are another one fighting for my list. Damn, there is so much more and I can't pick one of over the other.
-
My favorites:
10. Psapp - The Only Thing I Ever Wanted
9. Alcian Blue - S/T
8. Secret Machines - Ten Silver Drops
7. Islands - Return to the Sea
6. Calexico - Garden Ruin
5. Pearl Jam - S/T
4. Jose Gonzalez - Veneer
3. Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
2. Editors - The Back Room (US version dropped in '06)
1. Middle Distance Runner - Plane in Flames
Possibly great, but haven't listened to them enough yet: White Whale, Thom Yorke, Camera Obscura, Cex, Sonic Youth, Bruce Springsteen, Aloha, Muse.
Albums I haven't heard but would like to and are probably very good: The Streets, Belle & Sebastian, Clearlake, Arctic Monkeys, Jenny Lewis, Neko Case, Amy Millan, Cat Power, Flaming Lips.
Disappointments: Morrissey, Wolfmother, Tool, The Raconteurs

Hey Sparx, I heard a completely different version of "Nothing To Say" by The Stevenson Ranch Davidians yesterday on 3WK.com. (I had drifted away from that station for awhile and when I came back, they had a whole shitload of good new music that is appealling to me. They are getting kind of gazing. They always know how to please me. :D ) Definitely the same song as from their debut EP (2005) but remixed with a lot of extra layers and effects. Do you know what's up with that?
The Stevenson Ranch Davidians are another band who may be fighting for my full list later on in the year if they've got a new release to represent 2006.
-
I wish I listened to enough new music so that a full 10 albums could make my "best of" but I'm not quite there yet. Here are my favorites so far this year:
Phoenix - It's Never Been Like That
Secret Machines - Ten Silver Drops
Subways - Young for Eternity
Wedding Present - Interstate 5
Honorable Mention (could still make it): Band of Horses, Mellowdrone, Built to Spill, Rogue Wave
I'm sure I'll find a few other potential favorites by poaching off of others' lists that look like mine. I also left off some that were actually released last year but that I only started listening to this year, namely Okkervil River.

Nice catch, I forgot to mention them. They have a new release, Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs with a revamped lineup. You can hear a few tracks here:

Thanks! Obviously, I haven't been on their site for awhile. Damn! I'm listening now and I can already tell that they've beefed up the production. I knew they were working on new material but kind of let it all drift for too long with so much else out there to occupy my ears.
-
neil young - living with war
six organs of admittance - the sun awakens
sonic youth - rather ripped
espers - II
vetiver - to find me gone
om - conference of the birds

-
How quickly we forget that We Are Scientists - "With Love and Squalor" is a 2006 release in the US as well. It seems everybody had that last year.
-
1. The Sun Awakens-Six Organs of Admittance
2. Brightblack Morning Light
3. Dins-Psychic Ills
4. The Corner of Miles and Gil-Shack
5. Alienoid Starmonica-The Aliens
6. Passover-Black Angels
7. Black Gold-King Biscuit Time
8. II-Espers
9. Riot City Blues-Primal Scream
10. bootleg-Daniel Johnston/Spiritualized (what can I say, two new Spiritualized songs, perhaps)
others: Hearts-The Court and Spark, Freeze-Die-Come to Life-Michael Talbott and the Wolfkings, The Drift-Scott Walker
-
great calls, LGM. i totally forgot to mention scott walker's the drift and psychic ills' dins. the BML record is good but slightly disappointing, though i still need to allow it to sink in more.
this vetiver record is a real sleeper and gets better with every listen. if you're into espers, six organs, and BML, you'll probably dig it. it's better than devendra banhart's last few records, too.
-
Right now I can't stop listening to:
Black Keys- Chulahoma
Wolfmother
Boris- Pink
The Life Pursuit is fantastic as well, I was thinking it was 2005 because I've listened to it so much....

I love Lazer Guided Melodies. I wished that he (I think LGM is a he) lived over here so he could hang out with us sometimes. We could use a few more good live space psyche gazers around here.
I considered Psychic Ills myself but they got lost in the cut from so much else I was considering.
As much as I like the Espers album, I just think it kind of unwinds along the way. Still very good though. Agree about Brightblack Morning Light. It's good but I think they have just a little way to go yet.
Still toying with 2 more slots and am considering everyone from Alcian Blue to Televise to Monster Movie to The Voices to Mojave 3 to...... There's just too much and that's not a complaint.
My favorite various artists collection so far is:
</font>- <font size="2" face="Arial, Veranda">Psychedelica - Vol. One on Northern Star Records</font></li>
<font size="2" face="Arial, Veranda">
It's a double disc loaded with lots of goodness such as BJM, The Lovetones, The Black Angels, The Hiss, The Vandelles, The Stevenson Ranch Davidians, The Telescopes, Snowdonnas, FĂĽxa, God Is An Astronaut, The Electric Mainline, Black Nite Crash, The High Dials and many, many more. (If you order it directly from the lable, tell them Jaguar sent you and they will be sure to treat you right. ;) )

well, the large majority of that music i obtained from emusic.com
i subscribed to the "eMusic Premium Annual with 20% Discount Subscription", which gives me 90 downloads per month for approximately $15.99 per month, or about 17 cents per song
when sitting down and putting my budget together, i determined that $16/month was a reasonable amount to spend on recorded music
i purchased the Arctic Monkeys and Wolfmother CDs in a store on a whim, and the Voxtrot CD at their show in the GU cafeteria
i apologize, upon further review, i received a grand total of 6 of these albums in MP3 format (generally 192kbps) from friends
and i view grad school as an investment, i made the conscious choice not to seriously compromise my quality of life and eat ramen noodles for 3 years to save a few thousand dollars
any other questions about my budgetary decisions or financial background?

Let's say, it's lone star is shining even brighter.
There are a few good bands in Houston too but it still resides in Austin's shadow.

I see. So the reason you attended university was not because you were on a quest for greater knowledge. The primary interest was the acquisition of money. Well, at least you are honest. Youâ??ll get more academic bang for the buck by attending grad school. Doubtless you experience the rest of life in a similar fashion. Breakfast is an investment in daily nutrition. Masturbation to online porn is an investment in sexual release. Showering is an investment in personal cleanliness. Towelling off is an investment in moisture removal. Not to put too fine a point on it, but arenâ??t you afraid that this financial-gain motive stereotypes you?

sheesh, you guys sure are obsessed with my personal life
thanks for your expert interpretation, but by referring to grad school as an "investment," i meant not that my sole goal for graduate school was to make money, but rather that i didn't want to take 3 years in my mid-20s and live like a hermit and eat ramen noodles, so i'm living a normal life and taking loans out, which i plan to pay back with the compensation i receive from a job after school
i actually find the law fascinating, it's kind of like studying physics in a weird way; it unlocks keys for how the world works ... another bonus is the staggering diversity of jobs and careers available to a JD
so, i just wanted to thank you for consistently contributing positively to discussions about music around here ... any other pressing issues about my personal life that you need resolved? or can we get back to talking about music?

i enjoy the jenny lewis record quite a bit.
and the new belle and sebastian.
i can't stand to listen to wolfmother or the raconteurs or whatever.
jack white makes my ears shrivel.
that said, i'm pretty disappointed that the only things i could find to like were the jenny lewis and B&S. considering my record collection of yore, this makes me look like a softy.

I'm not as sold on this Destroyers Album as everybody else. Kind of a poor mans Mountain Goats to me.
After a week of listening to this years albums I've obtained (in no particular order):
Like Like:
Camera Obscura
Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins
Band of Horses
Art Brut (though 2005 in my collection)
Belle and Sebastian
Islands
Nouvelle Vague
Subways
We Are Scientists
Like:
Destroyer
The Elected
The Essex Green (need a few more listens)
Muse
Morrissey
Arctic Monkeys (I don't read much about music other than this board, and all that was said was "overhyped," but I never read the hype in the first place)
Not so much:
Flaming Lips (major disappointment after Yoshima)
Snow Patrol (tried not to be over produced and layered like the first album and all that did was expose them as weak musically)
Keane (I'm just over it)
Pearl Jam (ditto)
She Wants Revenge (sort of an F you to Clearchannel, sort of a cheap cashing in - I just can't decide which prevails. Either way, I'm over it.)
Wolfmother/Eagles of Death Metal/Racontuers (making a mockery of classic rock, should follow Truckers and Sloan's lead and put their own spin on it)
-
The new Built to Spill and Sonic Youth records are solid too.
-
I'm ready to move Muse's new album up to #1 or close to it for the year.
-
i've liked a lot this year, haven't loved too much. only one i really love is "rubies," which is about 28x better than any mountain goats record. i've completely guzzled the kool-aid when it comes to lily allen, and i never go for that breezy pop shit. but man is that album amazing, probably my second favorite. another one i really dig is the self-titled debut from adam arcuragi; anyone who likes sufjan, red house painters, mark lanegan, etc. should really check him out (http://hightwo.com/arcuragi.html).
new oneida's growing on me but still doesn't match "secret wars"/"anthem of the moon" for me. pink mountaintops, vetiver, human television, ladyhawk, all pretty good. ghostface does the trick when that white guilt kicks in.
-
I haven't listened to the new Muse enough yet (just a quick listen so far), but my current #1 album of the first half of the year is Cannibal Sea by The Essex Green. I'm seriously addicted to that album currently, and I'm really kicking myself for skipping their Black Cat Backstage concert some months ago.

Hmmm, this is interesting to hear. At SXSW, when the rest of the Brian Jonestown Massacre didn't make it in to town on time for the daytime showcase, the Black Angels backed up Anton Newcombe on one long, jam that was awful. He left the stage and they played the rest of the set and it was no good. Not sure how much of that was influenced by being geared up to see BJM, but it was bad....

by the way, i've been able to find pretty much every album i want from '06 on emusic, it's getting better and better ... now if they can only get sub-pop ...... [/b]
So can someone go find that emusic thread? Did you know all of Ivy's catalog is on there? DAMN.

I'm with you on really liking the album, and being an ass for missing them at DC9 not too long ago....
Oy.
Otherwise, 2006 is a lean year for me and new music. Signing up with eMusic has been great, but not much is really catching my imagination these days.
Best year I had in a while was 2004, I think....

You can stream the full Lily Allen cd here (http://3voor12.vpro.nl/3voor12/luisterpaal/luisterpaalalbum.shtml?10617791+29094249)
I'm only in to the second song...could see it catching my fancy, though there's no way to know yet.

Caught them at the Black Cat backstage in May - perhaps you were thinking of that show?

Going to have to add Cheap Trick - Rockford to my list and having listened to it am being to wonder if sensitive guy singers aren't in fact killing rock. Robin still has it that toughness and attitude so lacking it current rock vocalists. There a couple clunkers on the album, the Linda Perry and faux ZZ Top tracks. But soundwise it runs the gambit from when Cheap Trick ruled, Dream Police and Heaven Tonight.
For I don't The Raconteurs record just wished they had taken the time to actually finish it. Suspect that six months down the road I play it again and enjoy it.
I agree with Vansmack at all the feeble attempts at updating classic rocks today. Wolfmother only being more listenable than say Jet. It's too bad that Do Me Bad Things had to call it day as they were able to turn classic rock on it's ear a bit. But with nine members on board I'm guessin' it was a bit tough to keep it all together financially.
The other trend that worth noting at the moment is the return of the EP. Given that the cost of pressing any CD is the same whether or not it has five or ten songs, I like that some artists like Cary Brothers and Voxtrot are going the EP route. I would rather hear five great songs from a developing artist instead of it being padded by filler in order to release it a full length album.

has anyone heard the envelope (http://www.envelope.dk/) album? saw a video on subterranean, really great stuff
-
I figure since it's a mid-year list, 5 albums should suffice. My top 5 thus far:
1) Sunset Rubdown - Shut Up I Am Dreaming
2) Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
3) Tapes 'n Tapes - The Loon
4) Camera Obscura - Let's Get Out of this Country
5) The Knife - Silent Shout
Also just got this EP from this band Tokyo Police Club, definitely have "next big thing" written all over them, I think they're opening for Enon when they come to town.
Lastly, anyone know why the new TV on the Radio US release date keeps getting pushed back? And anyone know where to get a cheap copy of it so I don't have to wait until September? I absolutely love "I Was a Lover."
