Thanks, Sparx. The setlist includes 4 covers (Rock and Roll by the VU, Helter Skelter, Born Under a Bad Sign by Albert King and Roller Coaster by the 13th Floor Elevators plus one original yet to be conclusively titled, although I'm pushing for "Fried Dregs.") If all goes well, we may stay together long enough to decide...

Great, dont I feel special?

Hey, when you start fawning all over me like your wife does, then I'll start caring if you show or not.
For real, I'm pretty excited about seeing you two. It's been quite a while...in fact, I can't even remember the last time.

if you don't mind being a little late for the game the Black Cat opens at 7 on Saturdays, at least according to the website - you might be able to buy a ticket right at 7 (pollard - I don't know if they distinguish between opening time and doors for the show)?

they normally don't start selling tickets as soon as the actual front doors open, you have to wait outside or in the bar
-
Unless Ted Leo is REALLY big with the kids and I just don't know about it, I don't think this will sell out.... But I've been wrong before (usually, however, thinking something will sell out that doesn't, 'cuz I tend to give people more credit for appreciating good music!).
-
someone here told me it would sell out, so i bought tickets. i'll be there, have a friend from home coming down for the rockin'.
-
Well he was in the WOXY top 20 played albums of the year, a clear indication that he's big with the kids.

I figured it would be pretty scarey if I fawned over you too. Plus Jadetree would get jealous.
Are you going to bring your little Martian friend as well?
-
I still think it might sell out. when he played the backbar it filled up very very quickly and there appeared to be a lot of dissappointed people.
But he seems to have gained a lot of momentum in hipster circles since then. Plus its a Saturday night and there has not been a great show for a couple of weeks imho.

same here, i have been listening to that disc since i got it. the kozelek show starts at 7pm and the ottobar has another show later that night, so i should be back in time for ted leo at the black cat. i haven't done a double header in awhile.
i'll let you know how the show goes.

i'll be there too with a couple friends.

I'm sure y'all are right; I should shut up. I almost always get tickets in advance, so I rarely think about it much.
-
Anybody have a fear that both Shins shows will sell out within 24 hours, or do ya think we'll be ok getting them the second night they're on sale?
-

I bet they were all just disappointed because NKOTB wasn't there.

I don't think it will sell out in 24 hours, that is pretty rare for the Black Cat, and while they sold out fast in New York, that happens alot, as discussed here before
-
Crap, can that be?!? I'll never get my posse focused on that so soon. Maybe I'll just buy four or six tix..
When do tix go on sale?
What night are forum folks going? (I was thinking Wed show for sure...)

Well I aint telling when tix go on sale...people might jump on the case quickly. I will say that it's soon. Probably being paranoid. The Subpop showcase (featuring the Shins) in NYC took a week to sell out, and that waas only 200 tickets they were selling to the general public.
Probably will take more than a day or two to sell out, but I wouldn't wait too long on this one.

I can see how it would be a challenge to corral 51 gay men...
-
So you see my difficulty....I have to be sure there aren't any circuit parties going on somewhere that week....

Celeste had to run an ad in the paper just to corral one gay guy.

no, i can't wait to see you.............precious

I'll be at the show. Ted Leo gave a good performance at Coney Island, so it should be fun. And it might just sell out. I think Ted has a strong following in DC.
And a reminder that it's celebration night for Markie!
-
Based on the audience in NYC, I don't think gay guys are interested in the Shins. Their audience populated almost entirely by straight 20 year olds wearing bad 80's clothes.
You might have better luck getting the gayboys to see the Old 97's. Just show them a picture of Rhett.

Back to the topic of Ted Leo... The Black Cat's webpage says:
SAT DEC 13- TED LEO/THE PHARMACISTS, THE JOGGERS, THE DEEP SIX (DC Food Not Bombs Blanket Drive will be accepting donations of blankets, pillows, and toiletries)
If you're feeling generous, bring a blanket or something. Or some of your favorite soaps.
-

didn't the joggers also support the decemberists? if so, another reason to get there late.....
-
pitchfork had something favorable, and amg give them a decent review. take that for what you will, i usually show for openers regardless.
-
yes, that was the joggers opening for decemberists, and I agree,a reason to show up late, although I dont know anything about the deep six
-

yeah, dont listen to Brennser, he wouldnt know a good band if they sat on him. The joggers were fantastic.
Just kidding, they were stinky poooooo!!!!
-
I thought the Joggers were okay. Not good, not bad. Okay, a little more 'bad' than 'good.' Interesting, though, with their Whiffenpoof-type harmonic vocal stylings. What the hell, have a drink upstairs instead of down...

you are odd.

If the show doesn't sell out, I'll be there.

If there was a book on odd characters, I do believe an entire chapter would be devoted to each of us. Bagster is right at home. ;)
-
Nope. Not going. Don't like them. Have fun everyone!
-
if I go to anything saturday, might try to make it downtown for the sun kil moon show....
I'm going to see Ted Leo sometime....when he plays baltimore
-
if i'm feeling better by sat, it's off to the mojo room for the annual bopptopia benefit concert. it's about the only xmas tradition i have these days...
-
YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
thoughts? very good show but i'm surprised it was only an hour and 15 minutes considering he has a few albums.
-
I thought it was really short as well but I was kinda drunk so I wasn't sure - there were a ton of other great songs he could have played
but what a bargain -$10 in and $10 Cds
-
Weird War suck so wildly it's not even funny. Ian Svenonious is a sad caricature of his former stage presence... that's pathetic. And this is coming from a big Make-Up and NOU fan.
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists were good, but I preferred his solo show at the backstage. I was impressed with the Deep Six.
-
i had a good time. ted's set was short, but i really wasn't expecting a marathon show, knowing his past vocal issues and considering it was near the end of the tour. also ted's facial expressions rule.
i had been wanting to see weird war even before i moved here after seeing the make-up in songs for cassevettes and laughing at ian's crazy explanation for his "little gospel group". sadly, there was no "rhythm hive". the few cool songs were overshadowed by stage banter that has a captain kirk delivery. pls go 3 words without pausing.

wow - I didn't realize he was the guy from Make Up and Nation of Ulysses. What the hell happened? I like both of those bands, but I couldn't take more than 2-3 songs from Weird War. We bailed and went downstairs for a while. They were terrible.
I agree that Deep Six was pretty good though.
-
if only all shows were like that. my cds arrive in one piece and all play decently?
