Anyone? I'm fucking excited. Saw them at the Cat a few years back, high energy, tons of fun and I can't turn off their new album.
-
Can't wait for this one. I'm not feeling the new record as much as the others, but it's not bad at all. Should be a hell of a show - especially with The Duke Spirit opening.
-
Miss P and I will be there. She's been stoked about this show for some time now.
-
They didn't play "I'm Your Torpedo" in Brooklyn
:(
That's like the best song from the new album.
-
I'll be there, down the front. I heart Liela. :-D

What! It's probably because Josh sings one of the verses.... Who knows, let's keep our fingers crossed!
I just wanna hear Heart On and Secret Plans as loud as possible.
-
i'll be there. cant get enough of duke spirit. think i'm gonna end up freezing my buns off though waiting for doors to open

Me too!
Cali, what time are you getting there?
(I still need to figure out what to do with my extra ticket. Damn my sister not willing to skip school the next day!!)
-
So totally there. Gonna be hurtin' on Wednesday but I don't give a damn. EODM are worth it.
-
I'll be at Brian Wilson first. Hoping to make it in time for EODM. Duke Spirit sounds like PJ Harvey-lite, but EODM should be great :)
-
Now there's a comparison I don't at all hear.
-
i'll be there.. hoping they really rock out.
-
I will be present as well.
-
yeah, I don't hear PJ Harvey whatsoever...?
Keep in mind, the Duke Spirit rock infinitely harder live than recorded. You just have to be there. I highly recommend everyone get there early enough to check them out...it's a late show, why not?
-
I agree with your Duke Spirit assessment, but is it so wrong that I actually would prefer PJ Harvey-lite to PJ Harvey?

I meant vocal wise on some songs...I actually can't get into Duke Spirit at all.
Yes, Charlie. It is wrong. :)
-
I REALLY want to go see this show, but the 11:45 EODM start time and getting up at 6 a.m. is just too much.
The recent setlist looks good. It has more PLDM than I expected. And although I like "Torpedo," I'm more shocked that "High Voltage" wasn't played.
Best music video ever ("Solid Gold"):

wish josh homme were going to be there :(
-
shows how little i know..i thought josh homme was always there when they played....
-
me: Late Doors 10:00
The Duke Spirit 10:30
Eagles Of Death Metal 11:45
meagan: fuck that
i don't like them enough
if i didn't have work tomorrow
and it were at the black cat
i'd be more interested in going
i have too much shit to do to be dead tired after work tomorrow, let alone all day at work
if i were the band i'd be pissed
all because they're trying to maximize profits by having 2 shows in one night
they might as well play in baltimore earlier in the evening then drive down here for their DC show
if 930 club can have 2 shows in one night, so should they
this is what i would bitch about if i had time to be on 930 club board all day
-
How can anyone prefer the black cat and the main room's tinny sound to the club?

Much greater band-crowd interaction possible. I like being able to literally sit on the stage until the first band comes out, and being so close to what's going on that I'm almost in amongst the band. Also it enables artists to dive in all the easier. Ever seen British Sea Power close out a show there? Good stuff.
-
I have not. Knew I should've went to that show last spring/summer.
-

The band is practically in front of your face.
Seeing THe Hives there was one of the best concert experiences ever. Not to mention one of the best live acts around.
-
That Hives show was indeed pretty fantastic...VERY sweaty, one of the more interactive shows I've seen there. Same thing with the Germs, except even more insane. The Black Cat is definitely good for certain shows.
-
sam, think i'll get there at 10 or just before so i dont have to stand in the freezing cold too long. how are the EoDM fans, will they all be there really early? i need to be up close for duke
-
As Bearman says its "good for certain shows" but I wouldn't make a career of it... ALso the fact the whole place is cash only, the staff too cool for school (and usually unhelpful with the notable exception of Bud the bartender who is the nicest guy), the sound not that great, the sightlines poor unless you are up front, etc... all mean the place is pretty low on the totem pole..
Also lets face it, since the 930 moved in they just don't book much of interest...
Its the 930 club's minor league franchise.... some players make it up to the 930, some stay there forever, and some give up and get a real job
-
The staff have all been really cool to me. My only real beef is with the sound upstairs.

here's a timely example then for you!
last night i was walking on 14th.. some band named the aquabats was playing and there was a HUGE LINE..i mean the kind of line you see sometimes on saturday nights... all i wanted was to get a beer and hang out a bit in the red room.. kindly asked young girl working there by door if i had to do the line and that all i wanted was to go to the red room..
sure enough she said yeah.
thats helpful? thats retarded.. they have two doors for pete's sake.
they really don't know how to run a business.. no credit cards in 2008?????
i just hope they stay open as they are a good addition to the city and more imporatantly my neighborhood. they definitely play a role...and every few months they have a show i really want to see.. like gene ween band
i've been going there since 1994 so i definitely care about the place and i've seen some killer shows there and i know dante's heart is in the right place..but they just don't know what they are doing.. and that goes for everything about the place.. at the silver jews/monotonix show my friend orders some of that food from the whats it called food place and it took like 45 minutes.. he missed most of monotonix.
-
The cafe is pretty damn slow. I'll give you that.
Was it after 8 when you got there? They are totally closed until 8 and once they open, the line tends to move fairly quickly.
-

credit cards charge 2-3% to the business, not to the customer - so it's a convenience for us, but a cost and a paperwork hassle for the business. depending on how well the business is doing, 2-3% less profit and hours spent on paperwork might be something they want or need to avoid.

While that might be true for a great deal of bands that go through there, I beg to differ. Just because it hasn't reached the popularity level to headline 9:30 club doesn't mean it isn't great music, or that the band haven't figured out how to put on a good show. Plus there's the chance that you can catch bands in a small venue before they become really rather big. I've seen The Libertines, Bloc Party and Kings of Leon there, and while the Libs may be gone now they did move up to 9:30 prior to disbanding, and Bloc Party and KOL headline DAR these days.
-
And most of the better shows I've seen there were played downstairs by bands who probably will never (and most likely don't want to) headline at the 930.

if youve been going there since 94, youd have known their policy and about how the lines work.
and you might also know the cafe has always been quite slow, but the food is damn good!
i saw plenty of great bands at the backstage and at the black cat. the sound isnt great but it was nice to see Ash, Bloc Party, Graham Coxon, VHS or Beta, etc. there. Because as of now, Im not seeing any of those bands at smaller clubs.
and plenty of places in NYC dont take credit cards. But most places have ATMs where you can get some cold hard cash.
And whoever is seeing Animal Collective in NYC (forgot who it was) - the manhattan ballroom is another one of those all cash places. it tells you when you walk in, as once you go up to the ballroom (5th or 7th floor) you cant go back to the main floor.

Is that really 100% true? Almost every time I go there my favorite bartender asks me if I want to open a tab. I've always said no and never thought any more of it. shrug.

If you ever went to the original Food For Thought restaurant, you wouldn't be surprised by this. :)

I did go to Food for Thought and remember cockroaches in our booth but don't remember the extremely slow food service..
But whats the point??? Is anyone trying to argue that not taking credit cards, making people stand in line for 45 minutes to get a beer in the red room (when its probaly half empty anyways), taking 45 minutes to serve food at a music club.. is anyone seriously trying to argue this is good business?? Yes credit cards charge the black Cat a fee but they also lead people to spend far more money and are a convenience to people who dont' carry around that much cash and hate the ATM fees..
Anyways to each his own.. and to the person who wrote "if you'd been going since 94: BOLLOCKS MATE! I have been going since 94 but never had that particular situation..also I believe usually they have two people working the line..one for each door..
-
anyways we know why most places that are cash only choose that route.. its to avoid taxes...
now back to your regularly scheduled Eagls of Death Metal programming

no problem. i dont know if hammerstein is the same way, but i found this out when i saw the last shadow puppets there. luckily for me, that was one of the few days i had plenty of cash on hand.
and the sound is great up there. the shadow puppets were playing with an orchestra and it was phenomenal sounding.

It was AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! One of the best this year for sure.
ixkpd - you're probably thinking of Kiss the Devil from the first album. I was hoping they'd play it in the encore and they did and it's worth the $15 alone!
-
Don't forget "Brown Sugar."
-

I concur. One of the better shows I have been to this year. I am not sure if it was all part of the schtick, but those dudes played their asses off and looked like they were having a great time on stage. It was one of those shows where everything seemed to be clicking.
-
I was literally front and center for this one. The Duke Spirit put on a pretty damn good show. Liela was in grand form strutting around and I think the crowd was fairly impressed with them in general. Wasn't sure how the EODM fans would react to them, but their new album has an immediacy and accessibility that their debut lacked, and they were heavy on the new stuff.
EODM were great. Jesse actually came outside and chatted and signed stuff before the show, was very friendly. On stage he was doing his thing, hamming it up better than almost any frontman I've ever seen. The songs were tight and the sound was great even if the vocals could've been a bit higher in the mix.
For "Wannabe in L.A." they brought Liela out to sing with them. All around good show.
-
The Duke Spirit could borrow some hooks/melodies from EoDM!!!
-

Yeah, how could you forget Brown Sugar. I swear that song was for you, ixkpd-bk ;)
-
that set list has holes in it.. they played creeper>bag o miracles>cherry cola
great show! i am a believer!
also, kudos to eagles of death metal for allowing videoing of their show.. i think thats really cool and more bands should do that!
i'm sorry but duke spirit was boRING... yes she's a blondie look alike i'd like to show a good time and yes they are a professional band but their songs had nothing going for them.... more than 50% of people missed their set and i wish i had..
-
ran into a few characters but overall had a good time. hadnt heard an eodm song until yesterday and i'm now fan. that drummer sure does sweat and spit a lot...gross
loved the duke spirit and look forward to them coming back for their own show. there were a lot of people there during their set and the crowd seemed to like them from where i was.
-
Seeing the awesome Joey Castillo (who I'm pretty sure was sick as a dog) show up instead of Gene was pretty terrific. A major bonus to an already tight band. With Joey on the skins, those guys were unstoppable. Bombay, sorry that I disappeared with my drinks, had to get back to my barricade spot!
I really, really enjoyed the show, though I'm feeling destroyed today. Also, I totally lucked out in getting a cab. I had to walk to 14th Street, and trust me, finding a cab at 1:45 a.m. on U Street on a Tuesday night is like looking for a $20 on the sidewalk. It was nuts.
Interesting sidenote: a friend of mine was the one wearing the cute & fuzzy hat that kept appearing on Jesse's head. Initially he took the hat and my friend was like "um...I need that back" but then ultimately he gave it over. He did manage to get it back afterwards. Lots of interaction with the band though, and likewise I met some characters but they were ALL good.
I loved the "Pigeons of Shit Metal" tattoo as well.
-
It's all about KISS THE DEVIL...I need to hear it again live!
-
"I Like to Move in the Night" fucking RULED too. And "Secret Plans". And "Whorehoppin'".
-
I broke my finger at the show last night, I pulled some guy out of the crowd who was harassing this chick. He swung at me, I ripped his shirt and pulled him to the gruond. Thank god I was off to the side of the stage because security jumped on him. THey took him backstage to talk to him and he fought at least 4 or 5 security guards. My finger is sore as hell, bent to the left a little and purple. My lady friend got Jesse's Coke can at the begining of the encore. The show was AMAZING, their setlist was solid! Surprised they played "I'm A Fool" that was surprising. I wish they'd do 2 nights!

wow sorry to hear about your finger..didn't even realize shit had been going down..
I agree about just how good this show was...definitely my kind of show: rocking, upbeat, no bullshit, no jam band wankery, straight up, great frontman, tons of extras thrown into the set list..
I posted a little video at www.47west63rd.blogspot.com (http://www.47west63rd.blogspot.com)
for those who want to relive it or weren't able to make it (includes some of the bantering about the hat..)..

Son of a bitch. I really wish I had gone to the show. :(
-
Nice...you can totally see my shaved head in the video bobbing around.
-
that was me. really really sorry to hear about your finger but very thankful that you got the little man out of there. i'm still unsure if he was trying to kiss me or bite me.

And this is the half of the show that I had to miss because my friend wanted to leave at 12:30. He needs to be replaced.

LOL...well, I needed a cocktail, so that was my justification. If I was going to be up THAT late on a school night, I had to do it right. And trust me, I feel it today.

Never let one asshole ruin a show! It mostly ust pissed me off becuase the crowd was so kind, I had no problem going back and forth from the bar right up the the front and even back to the bathroom. Then this guy just blows right past us. It happens. Still had an amazing amazing night!

Yeah, Brown Sugar was pretty damn sweet! Thought I put that up there!? I knew I was forgetting something.

Hey does anybody have a good photo of the singer from the Duke Spirit that you could post? I want to show my wife what her haircut looked like. I thought it was a pretty happenin' do ...
Thanks !

That was seriously awesome of you! Thank you! Such chivalry is rare at a show. I kept trying to get the attention of the security guard but to no avail...it's one thing to elbow your way up front...it's quite another to elbow your way up front and then kiss and molest everyone around you. GROSS. Cali was putting up with it well, but when he started kissing another guy I knew things wouldn't end well...
Anyways, besides that little blip, it was definitely an awesome show! A lot of fun...and they're playing some shows in the Midwest in December, hey Seth??
Now, if anyone can find a video of the dude singing to me, THAT would be impressive...I still can't decide if it's hilarious or embarrassing.
