www.cs.colostate.edu/~hubbard/mp3/ (http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~hubbard/mp3/)
Anybody have linkage for holiday songs by bands you love? Here's "Holly Jolly Christmas" by the Old 97's.
-
unfortunately it's only snippets of one great original and a traditional xmas song...
Starbelly

-
Don't have a link, but the best christmas song without a doubt is Fairytale of New york by Shane MacGowan & Kirsty MaColl.
I'll fight anyone who disagrees!
Second is jonah louie, Send in the cavalry.
-
No fight necessary. It's the winner, hands down.

The best Christmas "song" is Henry Rollins reading of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas.
Nothing spreads holiday cheer like Hank's robotic voice nestled among the background effects of helicopters, machine-gun fire and, ultimately, nuclear annihilation.
Brings a tear to my every year........

At your age, that could be quite a while.
Just be thankful you didn't slip and break your hip.
-
I always liked that song by the waitresses, whatever its called.
Lulu likes Whams, last Christmas and Pariah Careys, all I want for Christmas is you.
I hate it when she buys CDs.
-
Kinks - Father Christmas = best ever
Similarly misanthropic = Blink 182 - I won't be home for Christmas
-
Second for Father Christmas
Root Boy Slim - Christmas at K-Mart
Fear - F**k Christmas
-
that would be "Christmas Wrapping" by The Waitresses.
the same cd, "Lump of Coal", that has the Henry Rollins Track also has The Wedding Present "Stepping Into Christmas" and one of my favs... "Little Drummer Boy (Up the Khyber) by the Hoodoo Gurus.
here's some more linkage for ya...
Cliff Hillis (former member of Starbelly)
On a Day Like Christmas (http://www.itsaboutmusic.com/lib/itsaboutmusic/cliff-hillis-on-a-day-like-christmas.ram)
-

I like Christmas Wrapping too.
SLADE "So here it is merry christmas"
Coz that's when you grabbed the girl nearest to you for a good snog. :D
I'll also admit to liking "Do they know it's christmas" By Bob Geldoff and a few of his mates.
-
geesh...this wasn't a content about which is "best"...

Hang Up Your Stockings (http://www.ikeonline.net/multimedia/parallel/Caulfields%20-%20Hang%20Up%20Your%20Stocking.MP3) It's a cover of a rare Alvin & The Chipmunks track, sans the helium.

"I Was Born On Christmas Day"
-
I'll have to go with Fairytale Of New York too! Other favorites are The Power Of Love by Frankie Goes To Hollywood and You Ain't Getting Shit For Christmas...don't remember who it's by though. Oh yeah, Stiff Little Fingers' version of White Christmas always puts me in the festive mood. ;)
-
Have a jolly Brit (http://www2.b3ta.com/merrychristmas/) Xmas, yar bollockoes!
-
Band I love: Bleached
Holiday Song: Jingle Bells
https://youtu.be/9evlQXXMcn8
Nice fun punked-up version and the kind of song you could almost see yourself screaming along to in a pit of sweaty people (oh shit, we don't do that anymore)
-
You love Bleached?
What’s your favorite album by them?
Top five songs?

Hard to Kill
Daydream
Stupid Ballet
Valley to LA
tie between these two new songs they released in 2020 Stupid boys and Jingle bells

My wife had said that Fairytale sucks, and that the Maria Carey and Gorge Michael Xmas songs are best.
I guess there's going to be a fight.
-
Last Christmas is a great song..
So is Fairytale
Anyone that doesn’t think so is pardon me just showing their ignorance

Agreed on both. The Pogues absolutely suck though, and Wham does not.

I think all three can be right...anything but that awful wings song
-
One of favorite holiday albums still remains Sharon Jones & The Dap-kings, it was a great holiday show as well.
-
Brian Setzers Big Band Christmas albums are all fun listens
and i've taken one for the team and the Jon Bon Jovi cover of Fairytale of Christmas is truly awful, couldn't even get half way through it...
even steve lillywhite CBE took to twitter to say "The worst ever version of this song . Sorry Jon ... embarrassing and pointless"
-

Fun yes
But they are pretty boring really
-

Wow that was absolutely insane https://youtu.be/KB9vvxYocW0
(only 6k views...my kids have youtube vids with more views)
I have to imagine the banter between the guys in the sound booth "are you going to tell him? Cause I like my paycheck and don't plan on telling him how bad this is"
His accents kill me. It almost seems like a parody it's soo bad.
has renewed my interest in seeing the Julian temple Crock Of Gold movie ...

Some good commentary here:

-
I only made it to 3:40
It’s pretty bad but the song is so damn good I still got goosebumps...I don’t begrudge him trying
But It’s one of those songs nobody should ever cover.. I mean come on Shane inhabits and lives the song and Kirsty MacColl (RIP you are missed and more so this time of year) maybe the greatest female voice of the past forty years....come on!
-
we can sure derail a thread in these parts... according to the twitter JBJ's take on Petty's christmas tune "Christmas All Over Again" is equally painful, there is speculation it's due to his aging voice and it's really beginning to show the wear and tear.
and having grown up listening to big band I've always enjoyed Setzers foray into big band arrangements and i'd much rather listen to him channel his inner sinatra verses robbie williams numerous attempts at crooning
i also liked Chris Isaak's christmas album, but it's essentially an elvis rehash
motown always turned out great Christmas tune arrangements and my one of leading favorites will always be Marvin Gaye's Purple Snowflakes
-
Look I like Setzer but his Christmas stuff is pretty boring but if people enjoy it more than I do great! I find his Big Band stuff commendable and enjoyable enough... it’s just missing any creativity.. it was done decades ago.. by better singers, with better musicians, better arrangers etc
Hopefully some people that like it will explore the real shit but not banking on it

Two more additions
Kacey Musgraves - A Very Kacey Christmas
lots of the redone classics, but a couple of originals including "A Willie Nice Christmas"
Emmy The Great + Tim Wheeler - This is Christmas
few more originals on this ones including the classic Zombie Christmas and Christmas Day (I wish I was surfing) and strangely only the singles from this are on the streaming services and not the whole album.
-
The Kacey one is a winner
-
I like this version of 'Fairytale' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxvV7Qhj_QU)
-
I like this version of 'Fairytale' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxvV7Qhj_QU)
Chris Thile even looks a little bit like John Stirratt.
-
Marc E. Bassy - Die Hard (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZY3ANNg96Gc)
DON'T YOU DARE TELL ME THAT ISN'T A CHRISTMAS SONG
-
Deck the Halls but it’s War Pigs (https://vimeo.com/491897792)

So this song (which I've credited to Wings in the past) is 100% paul
is really a crime against humanity....but what makes it worse is
it was estimated that McCartney makes $500,000 a year from this song, which puts its cumulative earnings at over $20 million
He should really have all royalties go to charity...

I'm assuming from the context clues that godawful Simply Having A Wonderful Christmas Time song.

Wizzard - I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJPc7esgvsA)
Elton John - Step Into Xmas (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbRtGMm96F8)
Jona Lewie - Stop the Cavalry (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HkJHApgKqw)

Chris Rea - Driving Home for Christmas (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDt3u2Ev1cI)

Robbie Williams - Bad Sharon ft. Tyson Fury (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UclCvU44vDk) (Snowflakes is also brilliant)
I concur with Kosmo, and would add anything off of Bad Religions Xmas album, She and Him's album and if you want to some compilations The OC Christmukkah album, The Edge of Christmas, Holidays Rule, etc....
Fairytale of New York is by far the best.
