I think my taste best matches the Amazon editors...three of their top 20 were in my top 10 (and I think four of their top 20 were in Celeste's top 10).
-
So you had two different lists? :p
-
pollard, thanks for posting all these...I haven't had a chance to look yet, but will print 'em out and take 'em on the plane on my way to Fla for the holidays. I can read about all these CDs it will be hard to find in strip mall suburbia.

I so wanted to dig the Thrills when I heard one of their songs, but I was too turned off by the hype and the sense I got that they were very contrived.
-
Dare I say it, I agree with Rhett on this one. Amazon is a pretty comprehensive list...and they don't have Elephant as number one, which is nice to see.
-
But instead they had Clay Aiken and Cher ahead of "Elephant" -- ?? I only looked at the top 40, so there could be some great stuff down the list, but in that top 40, I only have one album (and would only want the one I have...).
But, s'what makes the world go 'round, right?

I think they are referring to the editors list, not the customers list. But I don't find the beginning of editors much better. I really don't get why people like Outkast so much, I finally heard the whole of Hey Ya last night and it is pretty bad. And elephant is #3 on the list.

I was referring to the editors list. While I'm not dancing to Hey Ya, I just felt the list was more diverse than most, not just collapsing to the status quo. Yeah, #3 is still not #1, which way too many lists have Elephant listed as. Small victories.

I thought that was hilarious

i dont think anyone CARES what you think, mr. redsock.
:)

Aaah, sorry -- I didn't notice there were two Amazon lists. I was wondering. The editor's list is good from a quick glance.
I haven't heard Outkast, but I'm quite eager to. I love Hey Ya -- I just think I'll hear it so much over the next few months that I'll hate it by Feb 2004.

Seems a lot of critics like the Thrills. I wonder why people don't like them on this board...they lack indie cred, or people just haven't heard of them yet?

they are Irish but sound like America (the band), and sing about America (the country), I gave them a chance and thought it was crap

I have to write a review about them soon, only listened to the disc once or twice, and it was right next to "Chutes too narrow" in my player, so, for a second, I forgot who I was listening to. I won't make that mistake again.

Gomez are much better. British, don't sound like America (the band), but sing about America (the country).
-
Of course I like their influences...Byrds and Beach Boys (I don't know enough about America to know what they sound like)...but something about the Thrills sounds a bit overproduced and contrived. Not an unpleasant experience, but something seems to be lacking.

Not much of a gomez fan either, but will take them over the Thrills any day.

No wonder I thought they kinda sounded like the Shins...
-
Well they'ye like the Shins without all of the creativity and interesting subtle nuances. Remind me more of bands like the Counting Crows or Wallflowers more than the Shins. Well, maybe not that bad. But certainly has a sterility to it not unlike those bands.

The Thrills album is Ok, but the constant name dropping of US cities is a real turn off. The album is fine, but nothing else approaches how good the "one horse town" single.
How do Gomez sing about America? Almost all the cultural and place references are the UK. I cant think of a single direct USA reference in fact, other than Detroit '66.

And as I've said a number of times before, I think The Thrills suck donkey balls.
-
Yeah, shame on them for appreciating music/culture/cities that aren't their own.

I don't think that is what it is. I am sure you would find fault with a bunch of kids from Ohio who kept singing about Britain.
-
Its fine to celebrate other cultures, but to immitate the accent and the style is not paying homage to America, but claiming, falsely, to be part of it. Its just a rip off.
I guess it is somewhat reminiscent of Kafka's AmeriKa..... A book about a country he never visited.....

America sound like a crappy, overproduced and contrived version of the Byrds. Hence the Thrills connection.

did you have a stuffy head or congestion in your ears, maybe? that might be a more likely reason

With the volume down low, while busy doing other things, lots of things sound like the Shins.

Now you know how I feel, with all of these Anglophile Americans hanging out here.
At least the Thrills lived in California...

Though I agree with you, I couldn't care less about all of that. Quite simply, I just don't like their music.
Never liked America either. The band, not the country.

Interestingly, we own four of the top 15, and none of the next 35...

I think I will call it the list that finally proves pitchfork's irrelavance
it is good for finding stuff to look in to for yourself, but their judgement is just way off in my opinion
-
Wow, I have one in the top 50 of Pitchfork, none in the NME list. I guess I fail the coolness test.

hmmm. . .i've got 4 from pitchfork, and 7 from nme and popmatters. . .
-
I managed 5 from the Pitchfork list....
-
Pitchfork's mission statement summarized:
obscurity = cool
That list in no way summarizes the best records of 2003. It should correctly be called:
The best stuff you may not have heard & may want to check out.

I wonder if we have exactly the same 5?
DecemberistsX2
Ted Leo
Postal Service
Shins
There are two others I listened to a bit, but never bought....
M.Ward and the Exploding hearts.
-
How many of the pitchfork list does pollard have? I bet its 30/50.
-
How these stupid rags can leave off the Pernice Brothers and the Drive By Truckers is beyond me.

almost...well actually maybe I have 6 then - I know I have the Postal Service hidden underneath some paper on my desk but I haven't listened to it - Radiohead was my fifth....and no, I didn't think it was that great but at least it was an improvement over the other two pieces of crap they've released since OK Computer
-

19, but that number is skewed, because early in the year I decided to take a chance on some albums they were raving about and they were not very good.
