What, they couldn't spring for a vinyl soundboard?

I sure hope they're upgrading in some fashion.  I've been a vocal critic (not on this board) of the sound at the 9:30 Club for quite a while -- mainly the sound in the middle of the floor.  I had to give up a great spot near the stage for Swervedriver the other night and stand in the back of the room just to be able to hear something other than the bass.

have you ever been to a venue where the sound is good right next to the stage?

Yes - the Bowery Ballroom's sound is good right next to the stage. actually everywhere in that place sounds great.

some venues use front fills so that the sound is good up front.  usually up front you are missing vocals.  930 added some small ones a couple of years ago but they are rarely on.  it used to be the best sound came out of the flown stacks and the ones on the floor did not have alot of vocals. it is better now.   bowery ballroom only has flown spkrs.  no front fills.  you don't want to get too close to the stage there.

ive never noticed a problem at bowery with vocals being in the front. and i go to plenty of shows. webster hall can be quite bad for that (depending on the band) - editors sounded great, silversun pickups were horrid. (and im referring to the bands vocals - you could hear every word that Tom was singing and for the editors that is most essential IMO).

and btw - im in front for nearly all shows (im too short and wont see a thing if im in the middle or back).

use of front fills != good sound up front.  there is no one there to listen in on the fills and make adjustments.  i've been to more than one show where i wished the front fills were turned off, as they made the sound up front worse.  they can make things better but it's far from guaranteed, in my experience.

Yep - as others have pointed out, the Bowery.  Also Irving Plaza.  And both TLA and Trocodero have been fine when I've been there as well.

(Edited because I originally mislabeled the Troc as Electric Factory)

A new sound system won't help if the guy/gal at the board can't mix the sound properly.  Sometimes I wonder what they are thinking.
