Clap Your Hands Say Yeah?
I guess we'll see...

They're starting to annoy me already.

Exactly who I thought before clicking on the thread.

I'm not sure, but whatever they are, they've got a hold on me. Lovin the debut album.

I think Vampire Weekend is a lot better than CYHSY. I think the more apt comparison would be to compare them with Tapes 'N Tapes. The two bands have a kinda similar sound, I think, and both got major blog exposure prior to their first album being released.
-
Definitely agree more with this comparison.

Franz Ferdinand
-
i don't know who they are the next... but am willing to bet that major bunching and twisting of clothing will occur if someone gives them a negative review of their upcoming live show..
-
maybe (Franz Ferdinand / Artic Monkey) (Late Night Shots) squared
-
I'm not going, but I'll volunteer to do the review.

if we keep this thread going for a few more pages, would vampire weekend be the new smashing pumpkins?
i think the CYHSY comparison is spot-on, personally, as i don't think either band is all that great and don't understand why either one generated that much buzz. maybe i'm just getting old.
-
Funny...These are the exact same reasons why I'd compare them to tapes n tapes. (not much a fan of CYHSY either).

My first exposures to these bands have been on late shows. CYHSY played "In This Home On Ice" on Conan. I liked it and got the CD, which was good but not great. Later, I noticed that the chord changes in "Home On Ice" seem identical to those of George Benson's arrangement of "Breezin'" (anybody else hear this?). TnT played on Letterman and to me seemed like an "indie band in a box," not an original lick in sight. VW was on Letterman recently and were enjoyable, enough that I might pick up the disc.
-
Although I gave Vampire Weekend's album a D+ on my 2007 year end list, I'll take them by a rural mile over Smashing Pumpkins, despite the fact that I am indeed getting old.

The best part of overhyped bands is the inevitable hipster backlash. Vampire Weekend gets triple bonus points for eliciting both overhypedness and backlashedness prior to officially releasing their first album.

Which just goes to show how utterly pointless the indie/major dichotomy becomes every day. The indie scene is perfectly capable of eating its own without any help from the majors, thankyouverymuch.

Vampire Weekend actually have talent unlike all of the other idiot bands (except for Franz Ferdinand) you guys named in comparison. CYHSY/Tapes N Tapes are horrible!
-
Blogger friendly IndieBandInABox is perfect description of Tapes N Tapes, I remember being incredible annoyed by them when first hearing them. Completely disposal and forgettable.
Guitar Center's must doing a booming business these days with their Indie and Emo bandinabox kits... that and giving lessons to all those metal kids dying to get on the cover of Drum Magazine

how did you measure said talent?

i don't understand what the huge uproar is. i liked cyhsy's debut, but not so much that i was gushing all over the place about it. i, however, really, really like vampire weekend. i don't know why everyone is treating them like they are god's gift to the world...but they are a good band.
i also don't read pitchfork and almost never read music blogs. so maybe if you stopped doing so, you a) wouldn't get so pissed off about all their attention and b) wouldn't let others' opinions of the music influence your own.
just a thought...because typically, a high percentage of these uber-buzz bands blow. but vamp weekend employ a lot of simple pop hooks that should have a lot more staying power than cyhsy. and no whiny vocals.
-
But how does one learn about new bands if not by reading pitchfork, music blogs, and god forbid, music venue chatboards?

Here's how the inevitable Vampire Weekend backlash (http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2008/01/vampire_weekend_backlash.html) is set to progress.
-
brilliant
"Only New York's Hugo Lindgren dissents; months ahead of the curve, he concedes their dancebility but notes that "[if] theyâ??d shown up at CBGB circa 1978, these outré Ivy League preppies probably wouldâ??ve been beaten with bicycle chains."
this kinda sums who i feel about several of these highly touted indie or otherwise bands... i.e. Cold War Kids, The Bravery
-
I heard that Vampire Weekend is peddling the backlash themselves, since backlash gets attention and sells records.

I don't get that. They look to me exactly like the Talking Heads did back then, and they were heroes of CBGB.
-
Maybe art schoolers have more coolguy cred than Ivy Leaguers.
And I wasn't around, but I'm guessing the type of people who hung around CBGB's in 1978 didn't beat people up with anything.

I'm just looking forward to the show tonight. They're easy on the ears.

when are they coming on tonight?

According to the RNR Hotel website, they are coming on at 9:45.
BTW, I think it is unfair to compare Vampire Weekend to Franz Ferdinand. FF put out 2 very good albums. CYHSY, however, put out one good album, and one extremely shitty one. Only time will tell.
I am liking the Vampire Weekend and hoping for a decent show tonight.

9:45 according to the rnr hotel website (since when do they put showtimes up there?)

Funny the comparisons between FF and VW. I find them to be pretty comparable...both are music with lots of style and little heart.
Though I'll take FF's style over VW's style.

the lyrics of Walcott make me laugh.
and maybe miss cape cod a little.

Left early...couldn't take the oversold crowd who wouldn't shut up.
-
I'd only heard the "Kwazza" song before, so went to see them without having heard any of their music previously. Came away a fan. I found their songs to be clever and original, the beats inventive, the bassist, drummer, and especially the keyboardist very fine musicians, and the lead singer/frontman guy personable, gracious and witty. Their songs had me bopping and singing along ("Blake's got a new face"), and the whole show, at 50 minutes, was short and sweet and just enough. Yeah the place was crowded, but it's a puny venue. It was a good fun show. They sold it well, and now I'm gonna buy their record.
-
50 mins for a headliner?
-
I thought they sounded good. They only played one new song (which sounded great) and everything else off the LP. My only complaint was that they didn't play around with the arrangements. Most of the stuff sounded exactly like the album. They should have let the drummer go off a bit more.
The fifty minute set was fine with me. It was a $10 show on a weeknight.
And, yes, it was crowded...I could barely lift my arm to get a beer to my mouth. I am pretty quick to complain about noisy crowds but I thought people were pretty well behaved in the middle of the room.

Yeah, the show definitely seemed to be oversold. I was all the way in the back during the 1st part of the set and was kind of wishing I had stayed at home. I agree, they didn't mix up the arrangements much and the live show sounded almost exactly like the album.
That being said, I did enjoy the show more as it went on. "Oxford Comma" and "Walcott" (the encore) were both very good. I liked the new song they played as well. All in all, better than I thought it would be. I left smiling, despite the heat and crowd, so I guess that is a good thing.
It didn't seem over "chatty" to me, not nearly as bad as other RNR Hotel shows I've seen.
I think Chip Chanko has very sensitive ears....
-
I will never go back to the rock and roll hotel for anything thats even remotely close to sold out. What a dreadful place when it is that crowded.
-
I agree with that.
Sacklunch, I think it was just more chatty where I stayed in the back. A few people were talking for the entire show. WHY ARE YOU THERE TAKING UP SPACE??? Just put the cd on at home and talk if you're looking for background music or go upstairs.

I thought their show was just like the album - catchy and fun. Nothing astounding; but if you liked the album, you probably liked the show.
Definitely crowded and definitely hot but I didn't find it oppressively so. I liked that the keyboard player (who looks about 13 years old) kept his enormous scarf on throughout the entire show.
-
Yeah, I moved up a bit and it wasn't too bad (in regards to chattiness). I totally agree that sold out shows at the RNR Hotel are a drag. Maybe someone should have started a petition to move the show to the Black Cat mainstage ;)
-
No one has said this before, but the RnR Hotel gets my vote as the Worst Small Venue on the planet. If there was ever a fire there on a sold out show, I'm guessing half of the people would die from death by suffocation. Seriously, I freaked out last night, and I was way in the back!
I've also never been to a venue where you can't see the stage or performers from the back!!!
-
tried warning you...

Did you ever go to an oversold show at the old Ottobar/Talking Head? That was bad.
At least they had the risers to stand on in the back.
-
didn't see it.

I was certain getting the "The Sound Was Lousy" square on the Indie Rock Show Reaction Betting Grid (TM) was a sure fire bet... Kudo's to who ever ended up with the "The Songs Sounded Exactly Like the Record" square... The "The Show Was To Crowded" square was not in use for this game and "The Crowd Talked To Much" is a given :D
-
nice, we definitely should have had a pool going :D
-
man this makes me wish i hadnt missed the show to take someone to the emergency room.. good thing it was only ten bucks, and i didnt waste too much money. oh well, heres to hoping they play a bigger venue around here in the next half year or so.
-
the question is will their next show in dc be at 9:30; an inevitable co-headliner w/ cobra starship at DAR; or VFest
-
I think Vfest is a given... seeing as they are doing Coachcella and Bonnaroo... Possible a stop at 9:30, probably playing with some bigger at Merriweather and then the show at DAR although I don't see them doing that before a second record comes out.

A Toothsome Set From Vampire Weekend
Friday, February 8, 2008; C02
The only objectionable thing about Vampire Weekend is the complete lack of any objectionable qualities. The quartet of clean-cut Columbia University grads plays crisp, cheerful pop music with hints of African polyrhythms that only the most joyless (read: backlash-loving bloggers) could dislike. Each band member could qualify as "the cute one," and they thanked their Rock & Roll Hotel audience after nearly every song Wednesday night.
The avalanche of positive press surrounding Vampire Weekend's debut album resulted in an uncomfortably sold-out show -- but even the lack of breathing room couldn't suffocate the good vibes. If the performance wasn't exactly a coronation of the Next Great Band, it was certainly a confirmation that songs on the band's debut really are that good.
Opener "Mansard Roof" set the tone, with gently rumbling drums, warm keyboard tones and sunny vocals from singer Ezra Koenig. Earworm "A-Punk" showcased some ska and Police influences while "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" and "One (Blake's Got a New Face)" proved that the band's "Graceland"-inspired numbers weren't mere studio creations.
Vampire Weekend saved the best for last with the outstanding one-two punch of "Oxford Comma" and "Walcott," a pair of bouncy, impossibly catchy tunes that would sound just fabulous blasting over the campus quad. The lyrical themes explored in the songs -- punctuation, diction, escaping Cape Cod -- might come off as pretentious to some, but for Vampire Weekend it was simply a sincere example of singing what they know. If anyone else sang "Hyannisport is a ghetto/Out of Cape Cod tonight" it would be cringe-worthy, but with Vampire Weekend you simply can't help but sing along.

I've gotta be honest. I first heard this album back in December, long before I knew there was this much buzz for them. And the album really didn't do much for me. It still doesn't do much for me. I dislike it about equal to what I did in December. Don't hate it, just dislike it. Sorry, Washington Post.

so maybe, MAYBE we have already exhausted our complaints about how awful the sound still is at the hotel?
oh wait...it's still awful...

Actually, I have no complaints about the sound for this show. I Just Couldn't See A Damn Thing From The Back!
