Very expensive, although they do now have a loan repayment program for public interest work (I could have used that!), they had a nice international cirriculum which I enjoyed (including classes on International Responses to Terrorism even back in 1996 and NGO Legal Structures), strong tax program, and the building was brand new when I got there, which was great. They are isloated from the rest of the campus for the most part, but it's on campus, so it's the best of both worlds.

I loved it, though with the following reality checks:
- I was in high school, and therefore had no responsibilities other than to go to school and learn about new cultures and have fun.
- I was there for the tail end of Suharto's era (93-95) so it was relatively stable. Got much worse after I left.
When were you there?

Had a good time, professionally it helped me a lot. I could take classes at UNC Chapel Hill as well as at NCSU. Graduate school was very good, not as conservative as people tend to think, at least the school i was at.
As for music, you have the Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill.

Can't compare it to other universities, but enjoyed Duke and thought Durham was quiet, but not that bad.

That sounds familiar. IIRC, I posted "The Hot Vestibules." Or I thought about posting it.
Yeah, it sounds mysteriously dirty, but it's simply something most of us will occasionally experience over the next few months.
And Credentialism would indeed be a great name.

i obviously meant to leave the "l" off of there for "the sweaty vestibules" ... was the name suggested on here "the hot vestibules"? either way it was the best thing i'd heard in a while
can you believe i'm taking a train up to NYC in 6 hours and not staying for any of the CMJ shows?!?! shoot me now!!!!

mindcage- i was there from 95-98 fer my graduate degree.
i can't answer your footy-ball question as i'm a girl and really, the only college sports i follow is maybe basketball and aside from that, all the philly teams.
but really not even that closely.
also, while at OU, if not in the bowels of Kantner Hall, I could be found at the Union (music bar and grill), Haffa's Records or that one weirdly good comic book store.

You came in right after I left in 95 :) I wasn't a big sports fan either. I just lived with a football player for two years and had a handful of friends that did play on the sports teams. Living in Boyd Hall my first two years helped with that.
The Union was a great club. I spent plenty of time there and the Dugout for music. I played in a band called Bob's Brain while in school. Got to play for Halloween in 93 and Springfest in 94. Good times! Haffa's was the best...much better than Schoolkids Records (Although I did score some nice bootleg CDs there)
I went back probably 5 years ago for an alumni weekend. Lots has changed! I'm hoping to make it out there this spring.

Weird, the two people I know who went to Harvard (both law school) never seem to tout it. Maybe it is an undergrad thing. I would not have known either went there except others have mentioned it.

they're exceptions to the rule.
-
They only people I have known who went to Harvard never mentioned it either, others did, and whenever it came up they actually shied away from it.
-
I must not run in the same circles as you guys. I can only think of two Harvard grads I've met, and none from MIT.
Iowa State seems to be a biggie when it comes to the statistics world.
-
i only say this because i just went through two months of firm interviews, and pretty much all of the harvard law grad interviewers made a point of mentioning the name of their law school at some point during the conversation, definitely not so much with other schools
i think it's just that harvard has so much "layperson" cred that they're kind of conditioned into mentioning the name in all sorts of situations ... big difference between, say, university of pennsylvania, which many people may confuse with penn state, or even NYU ... i guess the same thing works with MIT, but the friend i have from there is a pretty humble guy, definitely embarrassed when it comes up
-
In my office I can't spit without hitting a Harvard grad (believe me - I've tried). I have never found that they wear it on their sleeve.
I think it's funny that a guy with the username "HoyaSaxa03" is griping about people noting where they went to school.

maybe it's different with harvard law, or different in interviews where people are trying to project something, or maybe i just hit an unrepresentative group of people

ha, true. but if he just went through law firm interviews, i don't blame him. when it comes to first-year attorneys, a lot of firms think that where you went to school is more important than what you did in school. hell, yale doesn't even give out grades. whereas class rank can be do or die for most candidates, second year law students from yale can go into interviews and just say "i went to yale," as if any qualification beyond their acceptance is irrelevant.
thankfully, no one gives a shit where you went to school after you get the job. they just care if you win.
