So if I'm at the club talking to a girl, am I supposed to be happy that she's wearing a backpack?

On the one hand yes, because it probably means she is a student and prepared to be witty and engaging to help passing the boring stretches between bands. But then again, no because it might mean she is homeless looking for a place to crash for a "while".
