What year is it? How long have I been asleep?
-
But Amy won five....she now ties Beyonce and Alicia!!!!!!!
-
They still give these things out?
-
I've never been more happy that the record industry is completely and utterly collapsing than last night.
Way to go Grammies! Way to say you know what's going on in 2008! Herbie Hancock!?!?!?!? WTF?!?! Is this worse than Steely Dan getting it over Eminem? How will Clive Davis pay for his hookers and blow?
I'm glad Kanye West got shut out of the major categories. Now, maybe everyone will realize he's really overrated, not very creative and not very good.
Plus, do the Foo Fighters write songs anymore or do they just chug out some guitar riff and have Dave Grohl scream "BLAH ARGH ARGH BLASH PRETENDER ROCK ROCK BLAH!" into a microphone?
Plus, Jesus. Don't get me started on the tribute to that small, overlooked indie band from Liverpool. How can hundreds of innocents lose their lives every day and these two are allowed to walk around with no one taking a shot at them?:

Why would you argue that the Grammy's would prove to everyone that Kanye is overrated when you've just arfues that the Grammy's are irrelevant?
Steely Dan are talented musicians, Eminem is a talentless white trash fat fuck. Steely Dan deserves to beat Eminem.
And I haven't heard Hancock's album so can't really compare to Kanye or Amy's albums. Certainly Hancock will have a more lasting legacy, based on what each of those artists have put out to this point (Granted, it's unfair to make that comparison.)

If you don't respect Herbie Hancock I don't know what to tell you. The Grammys are an award for music. Its not a pop culture coronation like the VMAs. The award was album of the year, not popular music of the year. From brilliant work with Miles to Headhunters to Rock It to now, the guy is a legend, total class, and the consummate musician.
-
I was at the Tibet Freedom Concert and during Herbie Hancock's Headhunters set some girl got struck by lightning about fifty feet from where I was standing.
Even God hates Herbie Hancock and his pointless, twiddling, jazz bullshit. He's like a black Harry Connick, Jr.

Are you sure she didn't see you and think "I'd rather be...."

They should give Amy Winehouse an extra award just for her acceptance speech.
-
Here's a question. Who had the worst/most obvious plastic surgery? Tina Turner looked great for being 265 but her face was little off. A lot of the oldies looked like muppets. They all had the Barry Manilow look.

Barry Manilow and Barbara Walters: Separated at birth?

amy's acceptance speech was priceless lol

I hear some sound bites from the Grammys Last Night. The Foo Fighters performance shows why some acts that sound great on an album or studio don't always sound that great live. In addition, I felt having a live orchestra did nothing to make the song more special. I heard it for the 1st time, and I was not impressed. I did hear Clint Black take jabs at Kanye West. That was funny, and I'm no country fan.

Has his boyfriend recovered from that tiger attack?

good for hancock.
can someone explain to me the difference between album of the year (won by hancock) vs. record of the year (won by winehouse)? are they just double-dipping here?
i didn't watch the show last night, but just caught the youtube of a few performances, including amy's acceptance speech (reminded me a little of benigni at the oscars) and kanye's "stronger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITSK7UynWEg)" - with daft punk, who as far as i know were not announced as being part of the show. way cool seeing them in action inside of the pyramid.

I'm convinced that everything going on inside the pyramid was fake. I'm not even convinced it was actually Daft Punk - the two guys were moving FAR more than Daft Punk seems when they perform as part of the ALIVE tour. I think they just designed that so it would look cool on TV. It didn't look as though they were actually doing anything legit.

Truth by consensus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Award_for_Record_of_the_Year)
Many wonder what the difference is between Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year:
Record of the Year is awarded for a single or for one track from an album. This award goes to the performing artist, the producer, recording engineer, and/or mixer for that song. In this sense, "record" means a recording of one song, not the composition or an album of songs.
Song of the Year is also awarded for a single or individual track, but the recipient of this award is the songwriter who actually created the song in the first place. Thus, "song" in this context means the song as written, not its recording.
Album of the Year is awarded for a whole album, and the award is presented to the artist, producer, recording engineer, and mastering engineer for that album. So, in this context, "album" means a recorded collection of songs (a multi-track LP, CD, or download package), not the individual songs or their compositions.

The Grammys really haven't gotten with the times. They still think it's 1977 and Billy Joel just released "The Stranger."
"Album of the Year" is what I think, used to be called an "L.P." Trippy graphics you could stare at for hours, bad ninth-grade English liner notes...somewhere to separate the stems and seeds. A collection of songs that you illegally download.
"Record of the Year" is what I think used to be called a "single." 45? 33? Something. A single song that you illegally download. Nevermind, that "Rehab" wasn't actually released as a commercial single in the US (and even in the U.K. it was released in 2006) just be glad they didn't give an another award to Quincy Jones or Paul Simon's "Graceland."

Album of the year is for best full length album. Record of the year is for best single-track recording.
Now, of course, your next question is obviously going to be: what's the difference between record of the year (won by Winehouse) and song of the year (also won by Winehouse)? In theory, the record award goes to the performer and is based on the preformance whereas song of the year is judged on the songwriting and is actually awarded to the song writer (who may not appear on the recording at all). I have no hard statistics to back this up, but from my recollection, at least of late, they're usually awarded to the same song so it is kinda double dipping.

Oh man, I got double beat to the punch that time. Julian's slowing in his old age.

So I was hanging out with Tico Torres last night and wished him good luck on the grammy nomination......I'm assuming they didn't win shit huh?
BTW, I really was hanging out with Tico Torres last night. Did you know he's only about 5 feet tall???

yeah, true dat - nail in the coffin is comparing the grammy video to this (http://www.thedailyswarm.com/swarm/daft-punk-alive-2007-tour-all-access/) view of what the real pyramid looks like. unless DP radically redesigned their IU (and, one assumes, the underlying tech too), that was indeed all for show.

I'll bite. Is he in one of those Contemporary Latin bands?

I must be getting old, cause I actually like Fergie. And of course the Eminem comment earlier was one of the stupidest one's I've read in a long time. He's got more talent in his little pinky then most other artists these days or recent past.

Don't worry. You're not getting old. You just have really crappy taste.

I like Fergie, too. She shouldn't get within ten feet of a cover song (did anyone hear her version of "Live and Let Die?") but she's a better Gwen Stefani than Gwen Stefani is.
I was telling someone over the weekend that she's released greater singles off one album ("Clumsy", "Fergalicious", "London Bridge", probably "Mary Jane Shoes") than Britney has in her entire career.

please define "greater".
sold more copies? no friggin' way.
more talented? neither have talent, it's a draw. all of their singles are studio magic, their vocal contributions were minimal (and then quickly paved over).
more culturally relevant to today's generation of emo-whiners? possibly, but i'll defer to your expertise on that one.

Seriously, it's like arguing Splenda is better than Equal.
It's still fake with no calories.

I don't know about Fergie, but Gwen's voice sounds great even outside of the studio.
-
I'll give you "Toxic" and "Hit Me Baby..." but the middle eight of "Fergalicious?", the "girl can't help it" chorus of "Clumsy?", the overall skankiness of "London Bridge?" That's at least 3-2, Fergie.
