Title: Bradley, Kurt & Shannon
Post by: sonickteam2 on June 24, 2008, 12:43:00 pm
this seems timely for our 90s thread....

So in a heated conversation last night I met a man who denied it was possible for someone to have witnessed Kurt Cobain, Shannon Hoon and Bradley Nowell on stage before their respective deaths.

I figured if anyone else had done so, it would be people on here...so who has...

disclaimer: technically I cheat because while Blind Melon opened for Neil Young in 1993, I didnt get to the show until after they had played and only saw Shannon onstage when he came on for the encore and did some singing with Neil.

I have.  And maybe on one more occasions.  I'll try gather the dates.

Nirvana twice (90 and 91 Palace and Palladium).

Blind Melon once (93 opener for Neil Young with
STP at the LA Coliseum - did a killer version of Traffic's Dear Mr. Fantasy)

Sublime (dozens of times in clubs in Long Beach and with No Doubt through out LA in the early 90's)

ohhh, snap, the dates

blind melon was 93  opening for Neil Young

Nirvana was like 3 weeks later.

sublime was twice at the Capital Ballroom I believe perhaps both times in 1996?

well, I suppose that all three bands only toured for about 2-3 years a piece, and maybe came through to each town once or twice, with the exception of SoCal and NYC.

add that to the fact that most of their fans were younger and werent going to 3 shows a week....we asked about 50 people at the show last night, all in their late 20s, early 30s and not one person had seen ANY of the three.

I asked a group of friends this morning and i got one person who'd seen 2 but thats it.

I miss Nirvana and Blind Melon.

It's too bad that "No Rain" song was so popular.  It was their worst one.

Sadly, I did not get to see either, as they both passed before I really started going to shows.

In the early days, Nirvana used to play a lot of benefit shows, and I saw them then, but didn't count it because it was usually a three song set and you were done.

You would have to be over 30 (I think) because a lot of the early Nirvana shows were 18 and over.  Sublime I would have said the same thing, except they did a warped tour gig that was all ages.

Blind Melon was just luck.  I wanted to see Neil Young and STP, and they happened to be the third band on the ticket.  I did get a beer thrown at me by a Neil Young fan for enjoying an opener - only time that's ever happened to me.

tru, Nirvana's Nevermind tour was mostly 18 and up but once they put out In Utero they were playing arenas and college gyms so thats where I saw them

Sublime was probably 18 and up so yeah, anyone under 28 y/o may not have seen them without a fake ID and let me tell you about how hard it was to get into the Capital Ballroom with a fake Id....not very.

Saw Blind Melon with Shannon at Woodstock 94.

I don't see how this person thinks no one could have seen them? These weren't bands that no one knew at the time of their deaths...

He was drunk and excited, obviously there are people who have seen all three, but i bet its less than 1 out of 10....probably way less.

so far we only have 2 from a board full of 30-something concert junkies!

me too.  it was crazy.. knew he was on something.. wearing a dress and crazy mascara rubbed out... turns out he had dropped acid before the show... died a year later.  Unfortunately never got to see Nirvana or Sublime.

..oh and I saw Alice in Chains before Layne died.. but they were around longer than the other three, so not that big of a deal.

I saw Nirvana...didn't see Blind Melon or Sublime though.

I actually feel more lucky to have seen Heatmiser (w/Brendan Benson opening).

Other dead rock stars I've seen:

INXS (when Michael Hutchence was still alive)
Material Issue (Jim Ellison was really great)
The Ramones (sadly with CJ and not Dee Dee)

 The Screamers
 The Stooges (w/Dave Alexander)
 The Minutemen
 The Replacements (w/Bob Stinson)
 The Who (w/Keith Moon)

For some perspective, I was 10 when Kurt died, 12 when Shannon died and 13 when Bradley died. Also, I grew up in WV, so even though my mom would have GLADLY escorted me to see any of the above bands, that was not exactly an option.

I did however see Wesley Willis before he died, ha. And in the non-musical but still interesting scene, Mitch Hedberg.

Wasn't Lane's body found something like a week or two after he died? What an awful way to have gone.

Was gonna go to that Hedberg show in College Park that took place right before he died and from what I've heard, it was a good thing I didn't make it; he supposedly read the whole routine off of pieces of paper and seemed completely out of it.

Wiki says yes.
They found his body April 19, 2002. Supposedly he only weighed 86 lbs at the time of his death too - he was 6'1" - ewww.

"The King County Coroner's Office estimated Staley to have died on April 5, 2002. By coincidence, the same Coroner's Office estimated Kurt Cobain to have died on the same day eight years prior."

The bigger issue is who would've wanted to? Out of the three initial musical acts listed, only Nirvana was even remotely redeeming.

In theory, I'd admit to a homosexual affair with a family member before I'd admit to seeing Sublime in concert. The fact some of you aren't at all ashamed about this fact is one of the most bizarre things I've ever encountered on this board.

saw Nirvana when they toured on Bleach [@9:30 w/ Loop & Thud, yeah!], Nevermind, & In Utero.

Pretty sure I saw Blind Melon at the club too but would have to look that up. Was never a fan but was usually around the club for most shows during that time.

And I saw Sublime when I booked 'em at Republic Gardens back in 1995. Dude was a mess, our guys had to carry him down the satirs and load him into the van.

Saw the MInutemen, Replacements w/ Bob, The Clash, Alice In Chains, Material Issue put on a great show at the 9:30 way back whenever.

Um, does the 930 Club show in early '97, I think, right before OK computer came out (not the one the night of the Tibetian Freedom Concert in DC) count?  ...if so, then yes.  :D

And of course Twangirl gets the trifecta!! ..the Nirvana show that she's talking about is probably the one that my roomate (worked at 930 Club since  about '88) has a few Nirvana shirts from. When he was moving in, I saw them and thought they were pretty cool.  He proceeded to tell me how he got them, so I'll hijack his story..

He was doing the merch that night. End of show, he goes into the office to settle up and comes back out and everything is loaded up in the trailer their van was pulling. He says, "Damn, I wanted to get a couple of those shirts we were selling." To which Kurt replied, "We packed them in the trailer, but hold on..."  So Kurt proceeds to climb in the trailer, over all the gear, etc., and is digging through boxes holding them up and saying "You want this one?  ...how about this one?  ...or this one?"  ..Kurt ended up giving him 3 of them.

My roomate said that he thought that, contrary to what alot of people thought about him, Kurt was really a good guy and very caring/thoughtful in the way he interacted with him and the rest of the 930 staff.   ...but again, this was probably in 1989 or 90, before they blew up so big.

yeah if you were asking 20somethings about seeing those three, you probably were going to be SOL with getting answers supporting your statement as being true.  while it's pretty likely there's a good number of people that regularly went to shows that saw all three, you really are going to have to ask around with people 30+.  nirvana's last US tour was 15 years ago, so a 30YO would have been 15 then.

i know someone that saw two of the three.  no idea if they were a sublime fan or not, so i have no idea if they saw them or not.

Saw the Replacements open for X right around the time "I Will Dare" came out... Hung out with Bob Stinson at a post concert party.  Also saw The Replacements perform as a surprise act at a R.E.M. show.

Saw Joe Strummer on his first solo tour for "Earthquake Weather"

Not sure if I saw the original line-up of the Ramones, too many changes in the drummer seat to keep up.  Dee Dee was with them, but it was after he was beat up in New York and he just didn't the energy of he early days at that point.

Other original lineups seen Big Country, Oasis, Undertones and Wall of Voodoo

oh yeah - Mike Watt w/ Eddie Vedder (guitar) and Dave Grohl on drums. It was like seeing the Cream of my generation.  Also, the first Foo Fighters Tour (two drum sets) and Hoovercraft (Vedder wearing a mask and "playing drums")

You guys are so lucky to have seen some of these acts.
Sublime's s/t album - along with No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom!! - were the first two cds I ever bought when I was little.  And then Nirvana followed shortly after.
Some of you hate Sublime, but they were a seriously influential band and I still love their music.  I would have killed to see any one of those three in their original lineups...

I saw this show at St. Andrews in Detroit.  One of my favorite shows ever.  It was before their debut was released so the awesomeness of their set was a revelation . . . plus Eddie Vedder's mystique was probably at its peak , , ,

Some others:  Anyone see Guns N Roses w/ Stephen Adler?  Stone Roses w/ Reni?  Libertines w/ Pete Doherty?

I saw GNR on the pre-Use Your Illusion tour w/ Izzy, but Matt Sorum;  Stone Roses at WUST w/ Robbie Maddix (I would classify his presence as 'tragic'); and Libertines at BC w/out Pete.

Due to the many dead brain cells that have flushed through my head, I doubt I could begin to list most of them.

 Frank Zappa
 The Germs
 The Minutemen
 Johnny Thunders (a couple times)
 Danny Gatton (tons of times)
The Greatful Dead (several of the dead ones)
 Muddy Waters
 Dizzy Gilespee
Lionel Hampton (I think he's dead)
 Nico
 Flipper (really nice guys)
I use to know Stiv Bators and have seen him in both The Dead Boys and Lords Of The New Church
Lots of locals who wouldn't mean much to most of you.
Not dead but his crazy ass may as well be but Jeremy Spence when he was with Fleetwood Mac way back when they use to be good, long before crappy ass Buckingham and Nicks detroyed the band. (My opinion and I'm sticking to it!)
Someone listed Madness. I've seen them. Did one of them die? Never liked them so I never kept up. It was a date.
I met Michael Hutchence but have never actually seen him play.

Saw Elliott Smith lots of times. The last time he had long hair and messed up a LOT. It was heartbreaking.

See, I disagree. Blind Melon is, to me, a benign footnote in the annals of musical history. Benign being the key word. Sublime, though, is a malignant, festering pile of date rape excesses and wanton druggery.

Hey I was at that very show!  It was also the show where Grohl meet his first wife.

Yup on the Stephen Adler... It would have been 88 towards the end of touring for Appetite for Destruction and they warmed up for Aerosmith at Pine Knob.  I remember being very unimpressed with them live at that show.  Very sloppy... I suspect they were probably pretty killer live when that record first came out, just managed to miss them prior to the Aerosmith show.

Cool!  Btw, I think he was already seeing her . . . I remember him mentioning his girlfriend/fiance/wife (forget which) was from around there and that she'd given him the guitar he was playing as a gift.

Interesting to hear about that GNR tour.  Their show from the Ritz in NYC that MTV used to show from Feb. 88 was totally killer . . . probably their peak

I got dragged to that venue all the time as a little kid by my parents for what I can only imagine to be awful Adult Contemporary stuff.

Ditto, but I saw this at Merriweather.  Can't judge it, really...I was too young and too psyched at the time.  Anything would've sounded great.

There's nothing wrong with Blind Melon.  Most of their stuff sounds nothing like "No Rain" (although I like that song a lot, too).  Nothing revolutionary about them, but they were a decent enough band.

so, in other words, they were a rock and roll band.

I was never a big fan but they were pretty fun live and I can think of 35 worse 90's band that are unfortunately still around..
