Title: Election Prediction Thread
Post by: HoyaSaxa03 on November 06, 2006, 11:41:00 am
House:  Dems gain 13 seats (republicans hold)
Senate:  Dems gain 4 seats (republicans hold)

i'm an eternal pessimist, but i think there's something to be said for laying low and staying out of power for the next two years ... WHOEVER is in power is going to have some serious fucking problems to take on, and either party isn't going to get shit done, might as well be on the outside for a bit longer ... and it will help the dems in 08 to still be out of power

the only problem is that there's been so much hype about a democratic takeover that a loss would be devastating psychologicially

Locally:

 O'Malley  wins
 Cardin wins
 Allen wins

I don't see the status quo going away around here just yet, unfortunately.

I predict Adrian Fenty will win the Washington DC mayoral race! I'll vote for him anyway. And I'm voting for Marc Borbely in the DC Ward 5 & 6 school board race.

I don't know if Webb will beat Allen, probably not, but I really want him to so I'm going to call the race for him.

 Democrats will take the House.
 Republicans will keep the Senate.
Democrats will win majority of Governorships

I predict that REM, Van Halen, Patti Smith, Grandmaster Flash and Joe Tex will win.

Joe, looks like you're on track to have your wish fulfilled: at 1:50 AM, with 99% of precincts reporting, Webb has 1,143,756 (50%) while Allen has 1,141,030 (49%).  unless that missing 1% is completely Allen votes, he's out of a job.

in less satisfactory news, Ban Same-Sex Marriage:
 Yes 1,300,884 (57%)
 No 972,640 (43%)
 with 99% of precincts reporting
really, who cares?  VA residents, you're forgiven for getting rid of Allen... but really, "defending marriage"?!?

sweetcell, I still can't believe it's a close race. Still hard to believe there are a million morons in VA who voted for Allen. Yeah, stupid morons...marriage is so overrated, and gay people are more well rounded than these one million+ breeders and Bible-loving fuckwits.
Take it up the ass sometime and you'll be liberated.

ya know, that's the crazy thing about VA... it's a state of extremes.  before i moved to DC, i thought that VA was a backward state comprised of tobacco-growing, gun-toting, republican-voting hicks.  once here, i got the impression that VA is all educated upper-middle-class DC suburbs.  apparently the truth is somewhere in between - to the tune of 50% vs. 49% this time.

I was on CNN like a hawk last night until I turned over and fell asleep during the commercials around 10something.

AND NOW I'M FRANTICALLY CLICKING to find out what the hell happened after I went to sleep.

I guess they aren't done tallying yet, but it seems as though the Dem's have definitely gotten hold of the House.  And Allen has lost.  Jesus saves.

But I STILL don't know what's up in the Senate.

And the thing in Rhode Island was INSANE...not sure if that's gonna be good or bad yet...

Who really gives a flying donut about the election?

I predict it won't make the slightest difference in anything.  Will the US suddenly become a less corrupt nation?

Now imagine that your pain is a white ball of healing light.  That's right, your pain, the pain itself is a white ball of healing light.

 I don't think so.

I'm originally from RI and there has been a Chafee in power for my entire life i think. Always been moderate's Dad and son, I even voted for the elder when i turned 18, and my family always voted for him despite being very liberal. This year they voted against him, and it had nothing to do with HIM, all to do with the possible change in power.

Will anything change, who knows. The bottom line, people were voting for anything different than the mess we have had the last 4 years or so. The hope of something different meant far more to voters than the actual dems they were voting for.

You are, with your mindless, uninformed cynicism posing as clever banter. Do you understand how the majority party in Congress controls the legislative process? Do you understand how laws are proposed and enacted? How justices are appointed to the Supreme Court? Your original post shows that you don't, and that's a shame.

A newspaper reports on the news of the day, along with analysis and details, to allow readers to form their opinions knowledgeably and critically. I'm sorry that you get your magical worldview from TV shows and comic books because the result is just another dipshit, naive citizen who uses sarcasm to make up for ignorance. Good luck with that.

wanna hate foreigners even more?  check out this article on CNN (http://edition.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/11/08/vote.world.reax.ap/index.html).  below are a few quotes:

From Paris to Pakistan, politicians, analysts and ordinary citizens said they hoped the Democratic takeover of the House of Representatives would force President Bush to adopt a more conciliatory approach to the globe's laundry list of crises, and teach a president many see as a "cowboy" a lesson in humility. (...)

Regardless of the effect on world events, global giddiness that Bush was finally handed a political black-eye was almost palpable throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

In an extraordinary joint statement, more than 200 Socialist members of the European Parliament hailed the American election results as "the beginning of the end of a six-year nightmare for the world" and gloated that they left the Bush administration "seriously weakened." (...)

One Frenchman, teacher Jean-Pierre Charpemtrat, 53, said it was about time U.S. voters figured out what much of the rest of the world already knew.  "Americans are realizing that you can't found the politics of a country on patriotic passion and reflexes," he said. "You can't fool everybody all the time -- and I think that's what Bush and his administration are learning today." (...)

In Copenhagen, Denmark, 35-year-old Jens Langfeldt said he did not know much about the midterm elections but was opposed to Bush's values. He referred to the president as "that cowboy." (...)

Passions were even higher in Pakistan, where Bush is deeply unpopular despite billions in aid and staunch support for President Gen. Pervez Musharraf.

One opposition lawmaker, Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, said he welcomed the election result but was hoping for more. Bush "deserves to be removed, put on trial and given a Saddam-like death sentence," he said. (...)

Some also worried that Democrats, who have a reputation for being more protective of U.S. jobs going overseas, will make it harder to achieve a global free trade accord. And in China, some feared the resurgence of the Democrats would increase tension over human rights and trade and labor issues. China's surging economy has a massive trade surplus with the United States. (..)

i always thought you were extracted from a split effect event known as the palahniuk syndrome.  i never assumed the election in itself could be studied as a needed signpost humans enjoy because of the fact it makes them feel all together now.  and the us of u.s. makes up just a sliver of the corrupt governments, so i would just keep on typing and listening to nice music because we could be the congo, or chile, or kazakhstan where "we hang those gay people from the trees."

i was just watching CNN on lunch break, and hate to tell you, but Burns has not yet conceeded in Montana. THey are now talking about a recall there, but according to montana law, it makes it quite difficult, it would have to be a closer race (burns being down by <2000 votes). and gotta love new yorkers, the whole office cheered when rumsfeld resigned!

I know what you mean.  I headed down to DC to see The Elected right after voting, and had no idea what was going on until getting home at almost three in the morning.  I turned on the news and hopped online as soon as I walked in the door.  :)

The results are so much better than I could have hoped for.  The Dems gained even more seats in the House than I expected, and the fact that they might actually take the Senate surprised the hell out of me.  And even though I was expecting it, seeing Santorum lose was quite satisfying.

And Rumsfeld stepping down!!  Talk about icing on the cake!  And not that crappy icing, either, but the whipped cream kind that's actually good!  I definitely didn't see that coming.

i like this one-

"Tomorrow you're all going to wake up in a brave new world - a world where the Constitution gets trampled by an army of terrorist clones created in a stem-cell research lab run by homosexual doctors who sterilize their instruments over burning American flags. Where tax-and-spend Democrats take all your hard-earned money and use it to buy electric cars for National Public Radio and teach evolution to illegal immigrants. Oh, and everybody's high!"

THAT WAS amazing.

But Jesus H.  Of course we live under a corrupt system of law, hell, I NEVER questioned that.  But if you know a flying fuck about anything having to do with politics then yes, this does matter.  It matters a lot.

Frankly, if you're going to sit there tossing in your hat saying that it doesn't matter and it's too corrupt a system to change, the same corrupt a-holes are going to keep getting elected and you will only contribute to the flawed system.
You have no right to sit there and whine if you aren't going to even care enough to ATTEMPT to evoke some sort of change.  So don't criticize me for caring.
If you're so pissed with the way they've been handling things, YOU should be the one following this and putting in your two cents and getting out there and doing something about it.  If everyone sat down and said their votes didn't matter than no one would go to the polls at all.
