Title: Did you vote?
Post by: chaz on November 07, 2006, 11:00:00 am
I know some of you won't.  Fess up.  If it's becuase you're a convicted felon spare us the jailhouse boasting.

I voted.  Good long lines at my polling place.  Much longer than the ones for last year's gubernatorial race in VA.

No lines at all at my polling place. Hopefully George Allen is on the way out.

Obviously long lines in Arlington = bad for Allen.

Does Springfield tend to lean to the GOP?  Based on your report I'm hoping so.

One really wierd thing....You know how they break things into two lines, the a-k's and the l-z's?  The l-z line was nearly empty the whole time.  Conspiracy????  I think I saw some strange square clouds on my way to the highschool too......

bill o'reiley was on the today show yesteday saying he anticipated a lower-than-average turnout of 35%.

i hope we prove him wrong. if for no other reason to tick him off.

or maybe his people prove him right.

 whatever- just go vote.

I'm not sure. Certainly more GOP than Arlington. If signs in front of peoples houses are any indication, I'd say yes. There are never any lines at my polling place though. Maybe it's because we get there relatively late (7:45 am).

leaving work at 330, should be a good time to hit the polls. i'm so psyched to vote for webb, even though it means going against a member of the tribe. allen really is the worst. "bush without the brains," right? hope the daily show/colbert tandem will be entertaining. i remember how depressed stewart was in 2k4, that wasn't much fun.

That's why I'm voting this afternoon.  Shorter lines.  Apparently one of the Arlington voting sites was on national TV this morning showing long lines (according to my lil sis in Ohio).

very short lines in NYC (around Hells Kitchen) and antiquated machines. worst thing, i know more about the virginians running than new yorkers. oh well.

as posted on another thread - perhaps its more of use here.

Election Protection - You have the Right To Vote!

Feel free to circulate this wherever it might be needed.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: CONTACT: Marjorie Press Lindblom
November 3, 2006 (212) 446-4868 ?? Kirkland & Ellis call center; Victoria Bjorklund (212) 455-2875 ?? Simpson Thacher call center; or Josh Epstein (212) 575-4545 ?? Proskauer Rose call center

 FOUR DAYS TO ELECTION DAY

Election Protection Coalition Launches Hotline to Protect, Educate & Assist Voters

(New York, NY) - With less than one week to go before Election Day 2006, the Election Protection Coalition will launch the 1-866-OUR-VOTE voter assistance hotline in three locations in New York City starting Monday, November 6th. 1-866-OUR-VOTE is the only voter assistance hotline staffed by live call center operators trained to provide state specific assistance to all voters. Election Protection targets historically disenfranchised communities, including Hispanic, African-American and low-income areas, by providing these voters with key information and advice.

Trained volunteers will staff the hotline by providing immediate, state specific assistance to callers. Call center operators will inform voters of their rights and solve problems on issues such as voter identification requirements, voting machine malfunctions, problems at polling places, and voter intimidation. In addition, volunteers will be on the ground monitoring selected polling places and will be available to intervene in person or place telephone calls to the appropriate election official.

The three New York City call centers will have over 200 volunteers answering 60 telephone lines available to hotline callers across the nation. The call centers will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. EST.

??The goal of Election Protection is to help every voter cast a ballot that will count,? said Marjorie Press
Lindblom, a partner in the New York office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP. ??Voters must have faith in our electoral system and we are committed to ensuring that their rights are protected and their voices are heard.?

Election Protection??s database, the Election Incident Reporting System, will record voters?? calls and allow volunteers to track the calls in real time and take appropriate action if necessary. The database has been used in the past to support the coalition??s efforts in lawsuits across the country to advocate for voter rights.

??The information we receive from the hotline will allow us to quickly notify our partners on the ground of any particular concerns,? said Victoria Bjorklund, a partner in the New York office of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP. ??The Election Protection hotline and database will work to ensure that voters are provided with solutions should they face any obstacles in exercising their right to vote.?
??Every individual??s right to vote is invaluable and Election Protection is designed to protect that,? said Scott Harshbarger, senior counsel at Proskauer Rose and former Massachusetts Attorney General. ??This coalition will help to ensure that every eligible voter has the opportunity to cast their ballot and make their vote count.?
Election Protection is the nation??s most ambitious non-partisan program for preventing Election Day disenfranchisement. The coalition of state and national allies seeks to ensure that every eligible voter casts a ballot that counts on Election Day.

Voted this morning. Good long line in my Alexandrian neck 'o the woods.

Funny you should mentioned the L-Z scenario, same thing happened to me. I was at the back of the line but had all A-Ks in front of me. Being an L-Z, when they called out that part of alphabet I got to walk right up. What could have been a long wait ended up being only a few minutes. So either we don't vote or we vote in the afternoon.

I registered to vote in the state of Maryland when I got my drivers license and vehicle title at the MVA, and was told I'd have my info in the mail within 10 days.  17 days later, still nothing.  I don't know if my registration went through, I have no idea where the polling stations are, and the Prince Georges County Board of Elections website has been curiously down all morning.

Daily Show Studios are right around the corner from where I live. Didn't see any correspondents there, but I voted a bit later (near 9am). Maybe earlier in the morning or I'm betting they went to other locations.

So mom spent 20 minutes doing a vote.  They had hosed up machines and how it was supposed to work where they print a receipt then you vote, but the receipts wouldn't print.  Then she had to fill out a provisional ballot and that took like 20 minutes and was a big pain in the a$$.  She nearly left in disgust as it was way too much trouble.

Yeah, I didn't register in time, because it's not coming up.  Technically I guess that means I can still go back to my hometown in Virginia and vote for Webb!

There was an Hispanic lady with broken English just ahead of me in line.  She had an obvious "Anchor Baby" tot in tow.  I think speaking English should be a requisite for voting.

When I was voting today on the touch screen, all of a sudden the picture went blank for just a coupla seconds and when it came back I saw Super Mario at the bottom of the screen for just an instant.  What does it mean?

8:25?  we had just left- wife had problems cause she didn't know if she did the motor voter registration (she wasn't on the voter rolls).

50% of california voters?  oh, you mean of those who voted, cause california will barely break 50% voting turnout total, including absentee.

there are more starbucks in s.f. than mcdonalds, wendys and burger king's, combined.

Inaccurate sample ballots describing Republican Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. and Senate candidate Michael S. Steele as Democrats were handed out to voters in at least four polling sites in Prince George's County this morning.

The ballots were handed out by people who said they arrived by buses this morning from Pennsylvania and Delaware.

Erik Markle, one of the people handing out literature for Ehrlich, who is seeking reelection, and Steele, the current lieutenant governor who is campaigning to replace retiring Sen. Paul Sarbanes (D), said he was recruited at a homeless shelter in Philadelphia.

After a two-hour bus ride to Maryland, Markle said the workers were greeted early this morning by first lady Kendel Ehrlich, who thanked them as they were outfitted in T-shirts and hats with the logo for Ehrlich's reelection campaign. Nearly all of those recruited, Markle said, are poor and black. Workers traveled to Maryland in at least seven large buses.

please define "near"?  in california, for example, it's what, 100 feet from the door of a polling station?  on the bus this morning, i saw a person waving a vote for chris daly poster "near" a polling station- course, being a daly supporter, i'm not surprised.

when i was in d.c., i remember getting fliers from tommy wells supporters asking to vote for him, also "near" a polling station.

i won't argue the point about misrepresentation (other than, like that's never happened before).

Kentucky poll worker arrested after scuffle

FRANKFORT, Ky. (CNN) -- An unnamed poll worker at a Jefferson County polling location was arrested and charged with assault Tuesday after a scuffle, according to authorities.

The poll worker allegedly choked a voter and pushed him out the door of a polling location.

Apparently, the pollworker insisted that the man vote on judicial races. He allegedly refused to vote on that protion of the ballot because of limited knowledge about those races, said Les Fugate of the Kentucky Board of Elections. (Posted 3:44 p.m.)

Check out the documentary "Street Fight" for an example of Democrats doing it in a Newark mayoral race.

It would be a bold move on the part of Democratic controlled House to vote for the impeachment of Bush, however probably not the correct course of action given how already divided the country is.  The Democrats had better be working non stop at producing a credible Presidential candidate.  The country doesn't need to run any longer by the likes Karl Roves and his band of thugs.

the democrats in the house will not vote for the impeachment of bush.  they will keep towards the center so as to not offend the conservatives that voted against the war and ties to abramoff going into 2008.

Voted:
Senate - Webb (George Allen is the biggest sleaze ball I have ever met)...

House - Cantor (Because of my own lack of effort to obtain any knowledge of the race I knew nothing about the opposition.  While Canton is not one of my favorite politicians, I couldn??t vote for an unknown quantity over him.)

Marriage Amendment - No (This was a poorly written amendment, it actually contained two issues.  While I would have voted Yes had it been solely M/F marriage only, because it contained wording to prohibit any chance of granting any of the rights now associated with marriage to non-married couple, I voted No.  IMHO this whole thing isn??t really about marriage, it??s about those rights.  The problem is that while many of the 'rights of marriage' should be such, a large number of them really should not be attached to marriage.  I could go on but you get the idea.)

Church Incorporation - Yes (Really a moot point since the wording that is being dropped has been ruled unconstitutional.)

Tax Break - No (Sorry but the folks who spend their money on that sort of thing already have enough tax breaks.)

Having said all that, I really hope that at least one party gives us candidates that are worth a crap in the 2008 presidential election.  I am not concerned what the label is next to a candidates name or the colors they are on a map.  The choices we have had recently were pretty damn useless.  Maybe by just dumb luck we will get some decent choices for a change!

It wasn't about him getting the appointment, it was the fact that while Bush had Pelosi in his office to talk about working together and being bipartisan, he asks the lame duck Senate to approve Bolton, which they couldn't get done with a Republican controlled Senate, and there is no way it will happen in January.

So before everyone starts thinking that the President got the message loud and clear from the voters and fired Rummy, let's take a step back and think about who we're talking about here. He only hear's one voice - Dick Cheney's.

From the Chicago Tribune-

 Confirm John Bolton

 Published November 14, 2006

Even as President Bush and Democrats cheerfully chatted about "working together" after last week's power-shifting election, an old fight was resuming over Senate confirmation of United Nations Ambassador John Bolton.

Bolton has been in the job for 15 months, but he has been working under a recess appointment made by President Bush while Congress was out of session. Bush took that path after Democrats blocked a floor vote on Bolton's confirmation. A majority of the Senate appeared ready to support Bolton, but there weren't quite 60 votes to end a Democratic filibuster.

In the interim, Bolton has proved he doesn't have horns. In fact, he has answered any questions about whether he has the right temperament and diplomatic skills for the job. He has worked to build consensus on the world's response to North Korea's nuclear test, Iran's nuclear program, the Middle East conflict and genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan.

He also has won over a key critic. Sen. George Voinovich, an Ohio Republican who voted against Bolton in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, announced in July that he would support the nomination now.

But Bolton looks like he will be a casualty of the coming Democratic takeover of the Senate. His recess appointment expires when the next Congress convenes in January. President Bush has resubmitted Bolton's nomination, hoping for a vote this week. But Democrats won't budge. "I think we should go to the things that we can work together on," Sen. Harry Reid said (D-Nev.) on Sunday.

In other words, the "bipartisanship" rhetoric didn't even survive a week.

Bolton has played the role of a proper diplomat, but he has also been blunt about the tremendous need for UN reform in the wake of the oil-for-food scandal and the world body's continued coddling of police states on agencies such as the Commission on Human Rights.

Bolton should be blunt about UN reform, a message the body doesn't like to hear. Such distinguished past ambassadors as Democratic Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Republican Jeanne Kirkpatrick also were criticized for tough talk on occasion, even when their passion proved to be right on point.

It is a bad time to have uncertainty about U.S. leadership at the UN, with matters such as Iran and North Korea before the body. If Democrats want to put some heft behind their post-election rhetoric about working with the White House, they will recognize that Bolton has proved himself in the job. And they will allow the Senate to vote on his confirmation.

Are we just going to move our email conversation to the board?  Fine.

Not one mention of his opposition to the U.N. doctrine of humanitarian intervention (Kofi??s "responsibility to protect" doctrine) ensuring the Security Council authorizes military action and forces U.N. members to accept greater responsibility when they ??intervene? in countries where atrocities are taking place.

Some folks call it the ??so Iraq doesn??t happen again? doctrine.

alot of good the u.n. is doing across this globe. . .rwanda, bosnia, sudan, zimbabwe. . .what benefit is there to seeking u.n. authorization to do anything if it takes 5 years for them to address it?  when programs they set up are often fraught with corruption?  the u.n. is an outdated relic of the cold war that no longer serves its original purpose.

In other words, the "bipartisanship" rhetoric didn't even survive a week.

That is a very loaded statement.  The reason that a vote won't happen is Lincoln Chaffee, a Republican, said he will not vote yeah in committee.

From there, trying to shove something through before the other party takes power is where bipartisanship ended, before the senate did anything.

Everybody knows that all the good policy that goes through DC started in SF 10-20 years earlier.  That's why I moved out here!

Which reminds me, we lowered the pot sentences this week.

It would set nearly all crimes involving marijuana as the lowest law enforcement priority for city police. And, it would direct police to essentially ignore most marijuana offenses unless they involve minors, acts of violence, driving under the influence or the sale or distribution of pot on public property or within view of public property.

In a related move, the board voted to create an 11-member committee to monitor enforcement of marijuana crimes.

Both marijuana measures were approved with the blessing of police officials.

Some residents objected to the law enforcement measure, saying the marijuana trade occurs along with other criminal activity that undermines the quality of life in their neighborhoods. The legislation was sponsored by Supervisor Tom Ammiano, whose term will end in 2008, and is rumored to be interested in running for the state assembly seat that will be vacated by Democratic Assemblyman Mark Leno. He introduced the legislation in August at the behest of groups pushing for the national decriminalization of marijuana.

Was out there last summer, at the movie theater in the Haight the woman selling tickets was toking up, everywhere else you could smell the sweet leaf, it was shocking to an east coaster.  Especially since you don't really see cigarette smokers out there.
