I was in NYC for the Valentine's Day Gutter Twins (Greg Dulli & Mark Lanegan) show. It was awesome. Wait, awesome doesn't even describe what it was. It was one of those shows where you left with a big grin on your face.
They did two sets, one with songs from Saturnalia and the second included songs by the Twilight Singers, Screaming Trees, and from Mark Lanegan's solo work. The backing band is the Twilight Singers save for a new drummer.
Definitely recommend checking them out when they play at the 9:30.
-
Just got the new album off a streaming site. It's stellar, no surprise there. I'll be seeing them in Amsterdam this week, and I expect no less than a life-changing experience. If I get to toke one up with 'em, even better. ;) From what I remember (alcohol tinged memories), the band and Mr. Dulli are just real nice guys.
-
Link that stream please?

You can find the link on the summerskiss website.

Yes!
Time to change your handle to Joe Marshmallow: internet detective extraordinaire.

This thread isn't about Britney and Jamie Lynn Spears. Does not deliver.

Promo for the album came in. Sounds pretty good.
Dulli will never top Black Love though.

That is indeed a damn fine album. It's my favorite Whigs album and I still play it often. But I'm enjoying the ride Dulli's taking us on through his work with the Lo-Fi Allstars, Lanegan, Uptown Lights, Twilight Singers, etc.
I'm excited that Saturnalia is finally coming out. And even more excited that they're touring for it. Two weeks 'til the PDX show! :D

I prefer Gentlemen, though Black Love is great too.
A girl once gave me a breakup tape that had about half of Genlemen on it.

A breakup tape?? Never heard of such a thing. Seems like such a waste of time. But then, have you ever been in any failed relationship that didn't fit the words to "Gentlemen?" The ones you remember, at least.

Yeah this is pretty much the one and only breakup tape i've ever gotten or heard of...all I remember is the Whigs stuff (my curse and fountain and fairfax) Fly Over by Jawbox and that's about it.
It was a hoot while it lasted though...well at least the first year or so...
-
I know I will get crucified for this but Powder Burns is one of my favorite albums of Dulli's now, every time I go back and listen to it I realize again how good it is. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Congregation, though. It was one of the first "deeper" Whigs albums I listened to, and I still do. I find myself searching deeper into his collection as time goes by, especially the live performances. There is alot to keep one occupied. ;o)
-
Burning, why would you get "crucified" because you like a Twilight Singers album? Powder Burns was indeed a great album as is Blackberry Belle. I prefer the non-Fila Brazilia version of the debut album from them, though.
Comparing the Whigs to Twilight Singers to Gutter Twins isn't really an option, personally. They're all separate entities who just happen to have some similarities.
-
aaah, a seperate thread for all the board Dulli- worshippers!
I did once make a breakup tape for a friend who had just gone through a bad one....man there was some depressing but hopefully cathartic stuff on there
I think I have to go with Gentlemen as my favorite album although Black Love has my favorite song, Blame etc (and my second favorite Going to Town)
I agree that the different phases of his career aren't comparable - I like the Twilight Singers but have found their work a little inconsistent and actually Powder Burns may be my least favorite Dulli product
But really looking forward to Saturnalia - thanks for the link.

Wait a minute. Was this a tape to help you get through a break-up or was she breaking up with you and the tape was pouring salt on the wound?
From "News Radio":
Bill McNeal: "Dave...what do you do when a girl breaks your heart?"
Dave Nelson: "Dylan's 'Blood on the Tracks?'"

That would be "Amber Headlights" (Dulli's solo album) for me.

so how big is Dulli now? 250 lbs?

Neither..it was a serious crash and burn kind of mess...the tape was mostly a commentary on my failures in said relationship.

He looked good when I saw him last week (Thursday and Friday). Dude can still make the girls swoon and there were plenty of guys at the show saying, "I'm not gay but..." :D
-
The whole "this album is better than that one" argument is pointless anyway. To each his own. Personally, I can go from Whigs to Twilight Singers without batting an eyelash.
I see there are a lot of Dulli-philes out there...
Last night I was listening to the Gentleman B-sides, some of which are especially comforting during the low points in a relationship (ie: last night was one of those times for me).
Yeah, Dulli has gotten big, he hides his gut well with his clothes but you can't hide a double chin. I think it probably helps to make him look younger, though. And yeah, he's still sexy, but then my dad was overweight and so is my fiancee...hmmm...maybe I have a fetish. heheh
My fiancee's comparable gut doesn't stop him from joking about how many subs Dulli eats in a night...
-
Thanks for the heads up on this. It slipped past me somehow. I need to see if it's came into the station yet. Good stuff.
-
Burning, how was the Amsterdam show?
-
I can't wait for this show. Though, the last Twilight Singers show at the Black Cat was my least favorite show I have seen them do. I love it when the do the encore of Whigs songs and close the night out with Faded. That might be one of greatest songs ever. Also, the track, Cigarettes, from Dulli's "solo" album called Amber Headlights just kicks ass.
-
Did anyone ever see the "120 Minutes" that Greg Dulli and Donal Logue hosted? They were obviously drunk or stoned or both and it was highly entertaining. Especially when they recreated "The Godfather." Good times.
Brian
-
Gregg Dulli's two best pieces or art are "Gentleman" and the cover of the Twilight Singers' "Black is the Color of my True Love's Hair."

Well, I just got back yesterday and the trip was surreal. I have to say I fell in love with the city, the people especially-it was very easy to make new friends. :)
As for the show it was of course thrilling, but not as good as the previous Twilight Singers shows. The club was so smoky it gave me a chest cold (everyone there smokes cigs which I don't get with the availability of other things) and the sound was not the best. The boys got off to a rocky start but got into their groove after a song or two. The highlights for me were the Lanegan-heavy Methamphetamine Blues and Seven Stories Underground. The biggest disappointment was the lack of connection with their audience. Mark was his usual stoic self and Greg seemed to be staring out into nothingness the whole time. His hand gestures were a bit over the top as well.
Still, I doubt this will deter me from seeing them again in DC. They should be a bit more comfortable by then....
-
Saw the GTs again on Monday night, this time in my home city. Really great show and lots of great energy from the crowd. One of the highlights for me was Greg singing "Amazing Grace" and then the band going into "King Only."
-
Gave in...bought our tix...I et al shall be there 0320. Got the album, stickers, pins...perhaps autographs soon? ;) Sounds great in 5:1 but nothing tops it live.

I was gonna say he doesn't look bad in the new Spin, but on second thought creative lighting does wonders to the waist.

Those guys were actually gay... ;)

Really digging this record & looking forward to the show this week. You going Mr Brennser?
Anyone got a link to complete lyrics for Saturnalia?

Barring any kiddie meltdowns I plan on being there

Regardless of waistline, his face certainly isn't anything to get too excited about either.

But he's a brooding, damaged artist.
He's a bad boy, and bad boys are sexy.
Except that he should have outgrown that by now.

Can someone explain this more in detail? What kind of specific lighting motif can one use to appear thinner?
I remember in Clueless, Cher was worried she'd stepped into some bad lighting and that was why Christian didn't want to sleep with her, but once it was discovered he was gay, I stopped considering the possibility. This is definitely something I'd like to know more about, though, if it's real.
-
While that kind of attitude works for a 21 year old in skinny jeans, I'm not sure it works for a 40 year old in a pair of Toughskin Huskies.

I thought they were playing a second set of Twilight Singers / Afghan Whigs / Screaming Trees songs?

4 of those encore songs are Twilight
-
No Whigs songs have been performed to date (although technically "King Only" was performed first by the Whigs), I believe...only TS, solo Lanegan and Screaming Trees.
-
Tomorrow night is going to be amazing!
setlist and a few bootlegs can be found on Scott Ford, the bass players site, if you haven't seen it already.

I liked them. They're one part Interpol, one part Sigur Ros, and one part The Catherine Wheel. It's very shoe gazey/atmospheric.
-
A "friend" told me that Great Northern was good. Time will tell. I am sure the Gutter Twins wil be good.
-
Great Northern suck. Dude from 30 Second To Mars (not the famous one). Check out their MySpace..

I hope they play Faded. That would pretty much make my day.

maybe they'll be better live (hope so anyway)

Don't count on it.
GTs' performance on Letterman (http://stereogum.com/archives/video/the-gutter-twins-offer-letterman-their-idle-hands_008505.html)

Great show!
-
I second that!!
Great Northern was fine.
The Gutter Twins were great. Very happy I went and will throw it in my friends face's that did not go.
-
I thought the show was very blah. I love Dulli, but I hope he decides to stick with the Twilight Singers. I thought the energy level was really low and Dulli barely interacted with the audience at all. Half the thrill of seeing Dulli is his showmanship, which wasn't 100% last night. Amazing Grace/King Only was magical, as was the entire encore... A lot of the 'Gutter' songs sounded very muddy from where I was standing. Bring back the Twilight!
-
I wasn't at the show, but I blame this on the crowd. It's always the crowd that is to blame.

I thought the show was very blah.
Based on the hype in this thread I stayed up late to catch them on Letterman and also thought they were very blah
-
Crowd was pretty tame, that's for sure (even Dulli made a remark about us "waking up" about half way through). And I'm sure Dulli has a hard time getting fired up with Lanegan being as mellow as he is. But I thought they were both in fine form. I enjoyed it.
Would definitely be interested in checking out the Dulli-related material that I wasn't familiar with. Setlist anyone?
-
I can see how Lanegan would make anyone mellow. He's like a non violent zombie.
-
zombie lol
compared to what i'm used to at the club, this crowd was very tame. not sure if people were new to the guys, tired, or what. it's too bad it wasnt as packed as it should've been.
this was my first time seeing them and really hearing their music and i enjoyed it. it was more mellow than i expected and i didnt like that they slowed it down right after idle hands but overall they put on a good show.
idle hands is my favorite so far. maybe because it's the first song i heard from them and it caught my attention right away. Dulli is soo charismatic. Its fun to watch him do his thing on stage.
I didnâ??t care for the opener. They werent bad, I just wasnâ??t in the mood for their music. They actually had a few songs Iâ??d want to listen to again, but donâ??t like them enough to purchase the cd.
i'd see them again and recommend seeing them if you didnt catch them last night.
have you guys seen this interview? it quite amusing

Lanegan was staring at my friend towards the end. I think he wanted to rape him after the show.
-
Has anyone listened to Soulsavers? I guess it is another Lanegan band, anyways, the song "revival" is really great. Check it out. What band will Lanegan be in next? Guns N' Roses?
-

It's not another Lanegan band. It's a UK group that had him do some vocals on their recent album.
Anything Lanegan touches I will buy. Love his voice. And the non-violent zombie description is so funny.
-
Shitty name aside, you missed an enjoyable Soulsavers show at Black Cat several months ago...
-
most mellow show i have seen from dulli, weird vibe. i loved when he was singing and moving about during front street. i think they were disappointed with the sound, dulli was certainly not too happy with the sound when he expressed that to one of the crew guys.
random citizen: it was so not like we have seen him before. don't get me wrong, i loved the show, but the enthusiasm wasn't there, from the crowd or the band.
-
I first time I saw Twilight Singers was down at Cat's Cradle in NC. It was the best show I have seen, for Dulli's enthusiasm, and the crowd's. The Norva was good too, even with Mark's mellowness. But I agree, the energy level has taken a step down lately. I miss him coked out or on shrooms. LOL
You guys must have seen this video with Mark and the Screaming Trees? It's priceless. He is TRASHED. Watch the last 2:30, it's worth it, trust me. :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5ZdnODBAPY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5ZdnODBAPY)
-
The crowd was tame - as were the performers - but...
Saturnalia is mostly a somber record. With a couple exceptions (Idle Hands & Circle the Fringes) it doesn't really rock. Maybe everyone was just rapt?
Highlights for me:
*Live With Me: excellent.
*Dulli vamping around like the old days during Front Street @ end of first set.
*Lanegan trading verses on Papillion.
*Meth Amphetamine Blues killed.
*Down the Line cover.

Revival (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wp1rL7DI_D4&feature=related) = my fav song from last yr

I wonder if touring is becoming a hassle for them as they get older and do it less frequently.
