Fuck'n aye!
Do they use a grapefruit instead of a ball? That seems a bit silly.
-
i think its cause baseball players want to play in March, but its too chilly so they all go to Florida and play, where its warm. and there's grapefruits in Florida. (along with countless other undesirable things)

The Sox mounted a comeback, and it's 2-2 after three innings.

what are you a fuckin Yankees fan AND a Leafs fan? i dont believe that.

They're playing BC today, and Northeastern tonight. Bet they don't manage more than a series split.

Ok moron, the Leafs went most of the 80's without even making the playoffs, the Lakers went the mid 90's without having a good team, the steelers have won zero superbowls since i became a fan around 1978 and didnt do well in the 80's that i can remember and the Yankees didnt start winning again until the mid 90's. My favorite Yankee was Don Mattingly and i never remembered him once being in the playoffs. Its not my fault that now the Yankees have the largest payroll and are winners, or that the lakers traded for Shaq and Kobe and are now winners or that the Steelers made at least seven consecutive playoffs under Cowher and are winners (well except for this year). As for the Leafs well they just became good after all those years of suffering for me. Thats my story and i'm sticking to it!!!!!!!!

Became a fan cause of the following:
Lakers - Just happened to see a game on tv where the Lakers and Sixers were playing when i was 8 years old. For some reason i picked the Lakers even though they got swept 4-0 by Philly.
Hoosiers - For Christmas one year my Dad got me a mini Hoosiers basketball.....my bro got a Georgetown one......poor guy.
Bulldogs - I cant remember how i became a fan.
Yankees - My fisrt baseball card was Bucky Dent.
Steelers - My first football card was Rocky Bleier.
Leafs - We had a hockey game when i was a kid, Maple Leafs v. Black Hawks, my bro was always the Black Hawks.....Pretty easy guess of who i was....but since we're in the 9:30 forum i'll tell you i was the Maple Leafs.
As for driving past Yankee Stadium on the way to Norhtern Virginia, I actually drove here from Colorado, so unless i took the scenic route, that surely didnt happen.
-
orioles will be better this year...and i drove pass yankee stadium 7 times before i finally went.
yankees stadium is the best of 3 major league parks ive been to. statin island yankees has the best minor league stadium out of the 7 ive been to but i havent gone to the coney island one.
-
Coor's Field is the best ballpark i've been to......about ten times.
-
Cool...will be there in June to see them play the O's.

wrigley is the best. . .friday afternoon games, ivy in the outfield. . . and beer is sold till the bottom of the 8th inning on day games. plus, they sell old style!
second favourite- pnc. . it's a beautiful stadium. . .and they sell iron city and ic light. . .if camden sold natty-boh, then i'd put camden above pnc. . .gotta support your local brews.
let's see, worst stadium. . .the vet in philly (but that's gone now). . .not that i've been, but i hear, from very reliable sources, that busch stadium is awful, at least they put grass back in a few years ago. i think espn voted olympic stadium as the worst in baseball.

it really isn't bad at all, a cookie cutter stadium but much better once it was renovated, and far better than veterans, of course Busch will be gone soon and replaced with a stadium just like all the other "classic" stadiums
classic is the new cookie

27 years of watching the cardinals has been far better than 27 years of watching the cubs would have been
have the cubs even had a decent third basemen in the last 27 years

i wouldn't call ken oberkfell decent. :)
in all fairness, i'm just support the fiancee here. . .i grew up a giants fan, but am now an a's fan, despite my dislike for american league rules. but i've never liked the cardinals. . .where's jeffrey leonard when you need him?

I would take Terry Pendleton and Scott Rolen over any of the cubs third basemen in the last 27 years. That loser Jeffrey Leonard is hopefully flapping his wing out of baseball somewhere.

he had a couple of good years with the cubs, but his best were with the dodgers. same with players like bill madlock (although i think he won a batting title with the cubs) and bill mueller. they seem to be better players either before or after they play for the cubs.
btw, pollard you know anything about tito landrum having a kid with tommy herr's wife?

albert belle? in case it was a trick question or something, no idea if he is still being paid
sidney ponson?

there was something about david segui making 7 million this year in the paper - is it him? belles salary expired last year so I don't think its him
-
according to espn it is belle
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/teams/salaries?team=bal (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/teams/salaries?team=bal)
-
weird, well what do I know about baseball anyway
but raffys #2 at $9 million and I doubt very much we're paying him that much
and I thought the whole reason the Os signed a bunch of free agents this year was that Belles contract was gone
but again what do I know about baseball
-
from mlb.com
When Beattie and Flanagan inherited the front-office job in December 2002, they were saddled with some unwanted contracts and needed those to expire in order to pursue high-priced free agents.
When the 2003 season ended, so did the contracts of Albert Belle, Scott Erickson, Tony Batista and Brook Fordyce, who combined to make $29.93 million last year.
The Orioles have added Miguel Tejada, Javy Lopez, Rafael Palmeiro and Ponson in the past six weeks. Tejada is scheduled to make $7 million in 2004, Palmeiro, $4 million, Lopez $ 7 million and Ponson will average $7.5 million per season. That adds up to $25.5 million, meaning the Orioles are actually under their estimated $60 million payroll from last season.
-
Well that's the answer i was looking for. When you subtract signing bonuses for the new guys, Segui has the highest salary for this year.
There really should be some kind of performance standards that atheletes must meet or elso they have to forfeit back part of their salaries to the teams...

from today's this day in baseball day by day calendar:
march 8, 2001
baltimore orioles right fielder Albert Belle is forced to retire after it is clear his degenerative right hip makes it impossible to play the game.

and the o's will have more money next year. . maybe they'll buy some pitching, because they are still gonna finish in 4th place this year.

Gotta love it when Tampa Bay is in your division so you have absolutely no chance at finishing in last.

Not exactly...we used to say it's great in the SE division because the Caps will get a top seeding every year, but we can't even say that anymore??

This from Mike Wilbon today - absolute genius re: the O's.
Let me admit to you freely that I pay no attention to the Baltimore Orioles. I don't consider them a local team. I consider their owner, Peter Angelos, an obstructionist to getting a baseball team here in Washington. It's not an exciting team. It's not a great franchise anymore and hasn't been for 10 years. There is no great player since the retirement of Cal Ripken to go over there and watch. And the franchise is clearly behind the Red Sox and the Yankees in its own division. Personally, I'd like to see the O's lose every single game.

I wish Angelos would stop getting in the way of the Northern Virginia Expos, I'd love to be able to take the metro to see the Cardinals.

Bet they end up with a better winning percentage than ANY of the sorry ass DC teams.
He just proves he is a typical DC asshole.

Agreed. I would love to have season tickets again, and root for a national league team. I had O's season tix for two years before the travel involved, a hatred for Angelos, and generally putrid baseball (on the O's part, anyway)drove me away.

I'll take that bet - you are wrong. Last year, the O's finished 67-95, for a winning percentage of .415. The capitals finished 39-29-8, and the wiz finished 37-45, for a .451 winning percentage.
Not to mention that the O's haven't had a winning record in five years, and likely won't this year.
Edit: If you mean this year, then maybe. They still will not break .500, though, and over the past five years have been just as bad, but more often worse than any of the DC teams.
