Well since Radiohead is confirmed as the headliner on 8/8 and 8/9, clearly false.
Rumours that are THAT top loaded are obviously pulled out of someone's rear.
-
The Flaming Lips as a headliner supported by My Bloody Valentine...really?
-
that would be an amazing line-up - among the best i've ever seen - but it does indeed smack of wishful thinking.
IMO, that list is an all-star line-up of bands that have mainstream pull yet also have indie/underground cred (or remnants thereof). more power to goldenvoice if they can actually pull that off. would make coachella east 1000% better than coachella west!
who knows, maybe those "radiohead headlines two days" rumours are false and RH will play their second NYC date somewhere in the city (hopefully not during the festival).
can't wait to see what the confirmed line up is... and what VFest replies with. best outcome we could hope for: VFest is moved to another weekend, ideally in september.

Yeah, I guess I don't see how Flaming Lips or Sonic Youth are bigger then the MBV or Portishead reunions.
-
MBV had one seminal album. Portishead are a niche band.
-
really? i think that the lips and SY have more mainstream drawing power than MBV and PH. although their reunions are big news, they've been out of the limelight for some time. not many youngins will be flocking to see them, as they haven't heard of them... and, unfortunately, flocking is what festival organizers need.
-
I'd bet either the Lips or Sonic Youth have both sold more albums in the US than MBV and Portishead combined.

I guess I missed a bunch of youngins a-flockin' last time I saw Sonic Youth and the Lips.
Didn't we all agree that Portishead was too big for 930 at this point? That Merriweather was more likely? When was the last time the Lips or Sonic Youth played Merriweather? I think the Lips/SY have more consistant drawing power in America but I think PH/MBV's first shows in the US in a decade are a one-time bigger draw. Just me tho.
-
I agree that Portishead is Merriweather worthy...as an opening act, like Modest Mouse.

Lineup out. Other then Radiohead... massively unimpressive.
Congratulations, All Points West festival! You've got an ace up your sleeves, so to speak, what with your pair of Radioheads and, now, a duo of stories in Pitchfork news within the same 24 hour period! Where can you go from here? Why, into big announcement mode? We'll join you.
The All Points West Festival-- August 8-10 in Jersey City's Liberty State Park, put on by the folks who bring you your Coachella year in and year out-- has announced its initial lineup, and boy howdy, it (almost) makes a person wanna spend a long weekend in New Jersey!
Apart from Radiohead and Sunday headliner Jack Johnson, we've got Animal Collective, Cat Power, the New Pornographers, Girl Talk, the Roots, Underworld, the Go! Team, Metric, CSS, Andrew Bird, Black Kids, Chromeo, Amadou & Mariam, Rogue Wave, Mates of State, Juana Molina, the Black Angels, Jason Isbell, Neil Halstead, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Youssou N'Dour, Kings of Leon, the Felice Brothers, Sia, Duffy, Little Brother, Nicole Atkins, Michael Franti & Spearhead, K'Naan, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Alberta Cross, the Virgins, Forro in the Dark and Your Vegas all making the trip.

So is this a camping-type dealy?

wow... knocked the wind out of my sails. mostly due to the hype raised earlier in this thread - my bad. to be fair, i'd be excited (in varying degrees) to see Animal Collective, the New Pornos, Girl Talk, the Roots, Underworld, Metric, Chromeo, and Rodrigo y Gabriela. not bad, but not 3 days worth
of excitement. and jack jonhson? really? apparently i need to tune in to maintream music more often, 'cause i was only vaguely aware of who is was... and now he's headlining both coachellas. weird.

nope, plan on hotels. if you're looking to save $, stay out of manhatten and look inland at anything near a NJ Transit rail station (http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/rail/Rail_System_Map.pdf) - LSP is within walking distance from the PATH train, which connects to NJ Transit. there are cheapies around newark airport, although that part of jersey is especially ugly. if you get something in jersey city or hoboken, you can even take the Hudson Bergen Light Rail (http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/LightRail/sf_lr_hblr_map.pdf) that run right to LSP.
-
Really not too impressive. It looks like I'll be at Virgin Festival.
I might have to drive up to All Points West to pull a Borat on Nicole Atkins and Chan Marshall, though.
-
Everybody in charge of Virgin Fest would have to die, and then their replacements die at the funeral, in order for V-Fest to not top this.
-
If they do single day passes, I'd show up Friday for the Radiohead set maybe, but I can't imagine VFest not being much better then this (Radiohead aside).
-
Hey Seth,
Please bring us Cat Power, too. Thanks!
-
They are really off...were they bored OR not enough "music news" to report?

Hey, buddy! You try to come up with a VFest prediction that gets 7% of its bands correct. It's harder then it looks!

further details/confirmation/embarrassment, from brooklynvegan.com (http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2008/02/all_points_west_1.html):

Here's the lineup for each day!
I'm there Friday and Saturday...

Cash is King, meet Radiohead. Radiohead, meet Cash is King.
-
looks like there will be 3 stages.
the "getting there - by train" page states The Newark Penn Station stop directly connects to NJ Transit's Light Rail, which will bring concert goers directly to the festival grounds. i'm pretty sure this is wrong. from newark penn, one can take the PATH train to grove street and it's walkable from there (10-15 minutes) - but that's not "directly to festival grounds". alternately you have to transfer again to the Hudson Bergen Light Rail line and pay another fare. again, not direct.
-
Meh.

Is it worth $89 + the drive to see Radiohead, Underworld, and the Go! Team on Friday... hmmm...
-
i'll probably buy one-days for friday and saturday too, and be ready to sell them off should VFest bring the goods. good thing that VFest is only sat + sun, 'cause friday's underworld --> RH would be pretty damn tough to beat.

The Go! Team
Bullet Stage:
Girl Talk
CSS
Forro in the Dark

Queen of the Valley Stage:
Andrew Bird
Mates of State
Nicole Atkins

These are bands doing the festival circuit. Virgin Fest is right on top of this one as far as the dates go. The lineups are going to be similar. Radiohead is great, but I'll wait until I see the VFest lineup.
-
$258 for this?
I hope they're planning on some heavy additions.

Feel free to make this a starting point for the Virgin lineup
-
I'm probably in for Friday and Saturday, barring some huge surprises from Lollapalooza or V Fest.
-
callat, i assume you're throwing lolla into the mix b/c of cost considerations, or because you can only handle one festival per month? (old man... :) )
lolla is the preceding weekend, 1-3 Aug.
-
The lineups on the second two stages are much better than the headlining stages. Too bad they don't sell discounted tickets for people who don't give a shit about the bands whose presence drives up the cost of the tickets...
-

oh dang nabbit I'm agreeing with Charlie on this one... also preferably presented at some time other than the middle of summer...
-
That would be great if you could buy a time-allotment for tickets, or just prove your too cool for school to like the headliner. I've probably go to a lot more of these things...

Yeah, mostly just having to pick and choose. I can't really do two big weekends out of town in the same month.
-
re: jack johnson he once played iota... apparently it was a zoo because he on the verge of breaking to the masses at that point.
-
If Rogue Wave plays at V-Fest, I'll be thrilled!
-
damn! $258 for this. I live here and wouldnt have to worry about finding a place to stay but that still seems ridiculous! now im just hoping radiohead plays somewhere in the city and ill be happy.
i would so love to go to this because of the convenience but just trying to justify the cost on that ticket is impossible.
-
xNWx - if you buy single-day passes for friday and saturday (skip sunday's jack-johnson-o-thon), that brings it down to $200 with all the fees. dunno if that's any less scary for ya.

supposedly not. they might add a band or two to each day, but the idea is to have all performers do full sets - which means they can't pack too much more into the lineup.

$200 is just as scary. I mean at that rate I might as well get the 3 days for the extra $58. In other news, Id gladly pay $40-$50 to see Verve 2 nights! I think I'll be passing altogether on APW, but there is a ferry going from NYC directly there which does make it a bit more convenient and a little more tempting :)
-
Pardon my ignorance, but have the dates for V Fest been confirmed, and if so, what are they?
-
(never mind - posted a duplicate by mistake)

Yes - they are the same weekend.

Ahhh... so folks are trying to figure out if an artist who plays one night at APW might conceivably be at V Fest the next, etc.?
-
that, and/or which one to choose. can't be two places at once :)
personally, i'm definitely doing APW on friday and am strongly considering saturday. so depending on the VFest line-up, i could be at pimlico sat + sun, sun only, or not at all.
-
Boy, this changes everything. Virgin Mobile Festival is on the same weekend as APW festival, yet they don't have lineup already. What acts will Virgin Fest, known as Virgin Mobile Fest, get this year. It shaping up to be an interesting summer concert season.
-
Do the bands get paid THAT much more for playing a full set as opposed to showing up and doing a shorter set, or is limiting the bands and having them play a full set yet another way for greedy promoters to make more money?

i'm wondering if this isn't forcing IMP's hand to reveal their line-up earlier than they wanted to... they should do it soon, before too many people start committing to APW (like buying tickets, which go on sale tomorrow).
kinda crazy that it's february, yet i'm planning for festivals in *august*. i only started planning for coachella 4 months beforehand, and that included arranging flights and hotels.

On a tangential note... do you think it's too late now to start planning for Coachella? Or would I still have time?
I am thinking that since there's no guarantee that Portishead is going to do a U.S. tour, I should either try to catch them in London on April 17 (tickets currently going for $120 -- ouch!), or go to Coachella.
-
FYI, there was a fanclub presale today and one-day tickets for friday and saturday went relatively quickly. anyone thinking of single-day passes probably should grab them sooner rather than later (on sale is this saturday). i doubt they'll be gone right away, but they won't last too long (i.e. a few days, methinks). sucks that we don't have the VFest line-up, so no way to gauge the alternative/competition.
Originally posted by Christine Moritz:

coachella now is still doable, espcially since this year isn't a sell-out yet and probably won't be. PM me if you'd like a hotel recommendation, this place didn't advertize online and actually still had vacancy last year when we arrived for the festival (all hotels in indio will be spendy, fyi - "festival prices"). airfare should still be reasonable - fly into ontario airport if you can, cheap and closest major airport.
