Lots of good ones listed so far. Add:
Fugazi
Denali (excluding that mini-reunion)
Dismemberment Plan
Engine Down
-
Luna mostly...
dean and britta live do a good job of keeping the sound similiar, saw them in philly a week or so back. . .but i too miss luna live.
guided by voices would be the other main band i still miss.
-
The Cramps
Buzzcocks
PJ Harvey
-
I agree on Fugazi and Sleater-Kinney. I disagree on the Dead. I thought the '90s shows were pale compared to the '80s shows. Perhaps it was just my mindset.
I miss Chris Whitley. He put on one of the worst shows I ever saw, but otherwise, the guy could make some amazing sounds with his guitar live.
-
Agree completely. I got teary-eyed during one of the farewell dates :'(
Luna mostly...

I'll throw my hat in for the Jesus Lizard, the Apes (just not the same for me anymore with the new singer), Andrew WK, Dismemberment Plan and Primus. Man, those Primus shows back in the day were so fun...I doubt I'd enjoy them now, but I have fond memories...
Dude, these guys had one full-length. How can you miss them...that's like two tours max.
<--------------
-
What's the story on The Gossip? They haven't split up, have they?
Definitely agree with Sleater-Kinney. They're one of my all-time favorite bands.
I'll nominate Beulah for your consideration.
-
Feelies
Screaming Blue Messiahs
Dream Syndicate

Not so much miss as wish I could have seen more than once, I mean they had an ep.... :)

Rollins Band
Jesus Lizard
Firewater
Girls Against Boys
The last three I would see at lest two to four times a year.
-
Oh, man, I forgot a biggie for me: Man... Or Astroman?

I've been wondering if we'll ever get another GVSB show! Saw them have some real good bands open up for them too! Radio 4, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Black Eyes
Also, Jawbox.
-
there is one and only one that comes to mind
THE WRENS
that is all
-
Oh, man, I forgot a biggie for me: Man... Or Astroman?
Hahaha -- I was thinking about them when I saw this thread last night, but you beat me to it!
They were always entertaining.
-
The Grateful Dead
Jerry Garcia Band
The Ramones
Black Flag
The Kinks
Washington Social Club
The Allman Brothers w/Dickey
-
agree with canyon..especially when they played at iota.
brandon butlers solo stuff is pretty good but canyon was great..band really had potential.
-
My wife and I saw Canyon open for someone once at the Black Cat and both of us thought they were dreadful. The headliner was good, though I don't remember who it was.
-
Fleetwood Mac with Christine McVie....sorry it's not the same without her! That's why I'm not seeing Fleetwood Mac next year!
-

when was this? maybe this was when they were just starting out?? always were solid when i saw them..
-
Yeah, who knows why/if Canyon wasn't up to it that night. Those shows at Iota were so killer, I saw four or five of them and they killed it every time. Might have been the most disappointing band break-up I can name.
-
red hot chili peppers!!!
man they NEVER tour anymore!
-
I really don't remember. If someone threw a complete list of bands they opened for at the Black Cat I'd be able to pick it out.
It was long before they hooked up with Jay Farrar.

Im sure theyre taking time off cuz they toured for like 2 years straight. If not working on an album. Stadium Arcadium was the bee knees.
-
My list is a long one:
The Ramones
Inspiral Carpets (still doing UK shows)
Ned's Atomic Dustbin (ditto)
Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine (ditto again)
Catherine Wheel
Curve
Material Issue
The Judybats
Paw
Red House Painters
Jawbox
Sugar
Heatmiser / Elliott Smith
Grandaddy
Face to Face (especially lately, even though they still do West Coast shows)
Queens of the Stone Age w/Nick Oliveri
and, back when they didn't suck, Smashing Pumpkins
-
the only answer is gbv

I was joking. I've seen them like 10 times and dont think i ever once bought a ticket because they were on the lineup!
-
Seriously though, i miss seeing the Tragically Hip
I know they are still around and i can still see them, but in DC/Baltimore its like, not even the same show.
Other than that , i dont think i've ever really seen anyone more than 5 times so i dont really feel like i miss any of them.
-
Broadcast
Brendan Benson (pre-Raconteurs)
Garbage
Le Tigre
Sleater-Kinney
I'll second the PJ Harvey and The Gossip, but the Gossip just played in April in NYC, and PJ played last October.
-
HA! We don't live in NYC/Brooklyn part-time!

Ben Andrews who played Madams Organ on Tuesday nights for at least ten years.. just fabulous bluesman... unfortunately he left earlier this year..not sure what happened.. i think he's playing in europe where people actually pay good money to see him
He was just amazing... a huge loss for DC.

While I wouldn't at all call them dreadful, I have never liked them either. Guess part of that is due to it just not being my cuppa tea. Have only seen them once but any MP3s I heard did even less for me.
Which brings me to the one time I did see them, they played at the Black Cat for the band I dearly miss seeing play live...
Phaser
Plenty of other bands I missed out on and would have loved to have seen but that list would be for a whole other thread.

Magazine, one of my FAVORITE bands ever, is playing a 5-date reunion stint in the UK in February. Am I strongly considering flying out? Hell yes.
Moral of the story: Get it while you can with the bands you wanna see!

Well, you know, that's just like, your opinion, man
-
Garbage
Oh, yeah, definitely Garbage!
-
Zappa
-
Not a lot of bands I've seen have called it quits, besides GBV and the Beta Band (I'd say Blur but, well, y'know... http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/148057-blur-reunion-its-on-for-real (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/148057-blur-reunion-its-on-for-real).) So here's a list of bands that sadly broke up before I ever got to see them live (or know they existed):
Fugazi
Mclusky
Dirty on Purpose
At the Drive-In
Beulah
Pavement
-
I had tickets to see the At The Drive-In, Murder City Devils, and Le Savy Fav show at the Black Cat in 1999 or so. I had to go to South Dakota instead....
-
could be for the best, sounds like that show would have rocked your face off

I was at that show. I'm sad because my ghetto blaster ATDI t-shirt I got that night is half dust by now. Had no idea Les Savy Fav played, but I do remember MCD and ATDI and they are two bands I miss right now.
-
Murder City Devils have west coast dates for next year ;)
-
thats a solid list. i really miss the judybats (the lead singer does do solo stuff). some of my other additions would be:
the ocean blue
ride
the mighty lemon drops
the trash can sinatras - i think theyre still playing in the UK but rarely make it to the states.
the manic street preachers - who never play the states either these days.
and mani mentioned the stone roses might reform. ian, of course, is not on board but heres to wishful thinking! guess ill be enjoying mani with primal scream.

You can add Air Miami to that list...saw them once with Spectrum and the Ropers at the Black Cat, THAT was a great show.
-
I'm going to add The Arcade Fire to my list. I know they're still around, but they tour so infrequently, apparently only one tour per album. Would it kill them to tour a little more? I've only seen them twice, the first time at the Club in January 2005 and last time being the D.A.R. concert in 2007, and their shows rank as some of my all-time favorites.
-
They toured 3 times for the first album, but DC area was ignored twice, including the first proper tour of small venues :P They performed 3 nights in a row in San Francisco the 2nd time around (I saw them there twice!). :o :o :o
I believe they opened for The Unicorns at the Black Cat (DFA1979 also on bill), but this was prior to the release of the first album...

Thanks for the info, but I don't live in San Francisco and I'm not one to pay for airfare to see some band I like. They've played DC twice since becoming at all well known, the last time being like 18 months ago, and that is too infrequent for me.
-
superchunk, Q & Not U, dismemberment plan, most secret method, butterglory, any variation of jenny toomey, tortoise, new bomb turks,
and i would watch mission of burma play *every day* if i could.
-
Midlake. Where the FUCK are they, and why aren't they touring now?
