Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks
Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson - worst opener!
Other artists who wasted my time:
Cat Power, Chromeo, Saul Williams...all @ Lollapalooza
Andy Zipf opening for Mark Kozelek
Subtle opening for Black Moth Super Rainbow
Cale Parks opening for Ted Leo
Black Kids opening for Cut Copy **NEW ADDITION**

That Malkmus show was indeed pretty damn sloppy, wasn't it?
As I posted earlier today, the Jose Gonzalez show at the club was a snoozefest. HR ruined the Bad Brains show. Oneida have apparently become a jamband or so it seemed after their Black Cat show (the new album is pretty good, however). Same for Akron/Family.
Soft Circle opening for the Boredoms was a big letdown.
I'm sure more will come to me.

I skipped a lot of opening acts this year, much more so than in past years, so I'm not sure I'm a good reference, but Modest Mouse opening for R.E.M. at Merriweather is probably my least favorite opening act of the year. On the other hand, The National who played before the Modest Mouse at the same show were easily the best. I've seen The National play several times at the Black Cat and the 9:30 Club, and their performance at Merriweather was the best I've seen them. Sadly, most of the audience hadn't shown up yet.
My least favorite headliner this year was Margot & the Nuclear So and So's (2008/08/13) at the Club. I'd seen them before at the Black Cat, and I thought they were very good, but this show was just lousy. They played mostly new material, and their new material just didn't seem at all interesting.

ambulance ltd are very yucky live
and i will say times new viking, who i found incredibly loud, rude, and annoying

Completely agree on both accounts.
Are Modest Mouse always that awful live?
And I've seen the National 3x; once at the club, once at Merriweather and once at The National in Richmond (:)). They're exponentially better as an opener.

I'll second Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson (Seriously? That name?) and Modest Mouse.
Adding to the list of shitty openers: Telepathe, Growing
---
That Cat Power show at Lollapalooza was ATROCIOUS.

Adding to the list of shitty openers: Telepathe, Growing
I second the vote for Growing as a shitty opener
Add to the list The Teenagers, The Dance Party, Illinois, Don McGlashan
I think we should have a best openers/openers who were better than the headliners thread. I discovered a bunch of new music this year from awesome opening acts.
the worst live shows list is a little too long for me.
-
Vampire Weekend was underwhelming and I didn't even have my hopes up.
-
Black Kids at Sonar was horrible.
Also the Death Set opening for Bonde Do Role was bad.
-
team robespierre opening for the teenagers was awful. so were the teenagers. it was only fitting.
team robespierre also opened for foals and too many other bands ive seen this year. im guessing in 09 they will be the next virgins.

How could you leave off The Honeydrips?
Guess I should ask myself the same thing.
I still like Growing.
Ooooooooh I almost forgot about the most hilariously horrible act I saw all year.
MC Sub-Zero Permafrost opening for Pterodactyl at AS220 in Providence. It was this female rapper/Ipod dj who spent most of her set rapping about her love for male genetalia.
-
That Cat Power show at Lollapalooza was ATROCIOUS.
Giving her another chance. Reporting live from the show tonight. Last nights show in NYC was apparently 25 songs and only 5 of those were originals. Hope this show has more energy than her Lolla set.

Cat Powe at Virgin Fest was horrible too.

So the first half up until Metal Heart was actually 100% better than when I saw her at Lolla...but OH MY GOD, she came back after Metal Heart and did a ten-minute organ/bass cover of Joni Mitchell's "Blue", and some other slow ass depressing mumbled cover, and now this half-mumbled long ass cover of "Dark End of the Street" (which nobody does better than Diamanda Galas, btw).

Oh, here's the setlist:
I Don't Blame You
House of the Rising Sun
Dreams
Woman Left Lonely
Silver Stallion
I Lost Someone
Lord Help the Poor and the Needy (Slower Version)
Fortunate Son
Metal Heart
Blue
She's Got You
Dark End of the Street
Don't Explain
Making Believe
Song to Bobby
Where is My Love
The Moon
New York, New York (Mellow)
Ramblin' (Wo)man
Angelitos Negros
So...to be fair, Silver Stallion, House of the Rising Sun, and Metal Heart were the definite highlights, but WOW, out of 20 songs, she only did four originals, and one of those was warped WAY beyond recognition (Where is My Love). I totally dug the new "I Dont Blame You" though.
-
Makin' Believe and New York weren't played. Great show, though. "Dreams," "Don't Explain" and "The Moon" --> "Ramblin' Woman" were my highlights. I loved her set tonight AND I thought she was phenomenal at Virgin Fest. You're all crazy. :)
I hated Ted Leo opening for Pearl Jam. Maybe it was the Verizon Center at fault, but he sounded awful.
Chuck Berry at Virgin Fest was such an abomination. I really want to block that from my memory.
Ambulance LTD is good live when the keyboard player can harmonize with Marcus.
-
I agree for ixkpd-bk for the most part; the only exception being that I didn't like "I Don't Blame You." And I definitely didn't hear "New York, New York" unless she played it completely beyond recognition. Second half was indeed brutal IMO. But a brand of brutality of a completely different form ended up saving the night. More on that in the "metal weekend rollcall" thread. :)
