Ok guys who's all going to the spectacle thats going to be held at the mall today?????? Not from the DC area but while in the area why not do all this festivity crap. I'm going to try and get and see how close I can get or get killed by it. Either or would be fine. Oh yeah saw the Ravenettes last night too and it was awesome.
-
yeah, thought the Raveonettes were good - seemed like a short set though
-
Yeah that set was short i thought. I've got some videos of the show so will need to post it and hopefully I can get some video of todays mall thing if I'm not 10,000 yards away which may seem like might be the case if I dont hurry up and get the fuck out of here.
-
The most pleasantly surprising show I've ever seen was the Raveonettes at the Black Cat about 3 years ago. I've never seen a crowd rock as hard (at the BC) as the one at that show. Who'da thought?
-
I am going to pop down there, although of course I won't be able to see anything since I didn't get there at 8am...
-
wow herbie hancock + cheryl crow + will.i.am + bob marley song = TRAINWRECK
and whats up with letting Garth Brooks do "Shout"? seriously Jack Black could have done a better version of that song....
but it was very cool to see Bettye LaVette up there, shame she had to share the stage with that white dude...
For anyone who did attend, was the sound there problematic as indicated over at WaPo?
Any clues on who came out with James Taylor other than John Legend? And who was the third with Pete Seeger and Bruce
-
Pete Seeger's grandson

that was one of my guesses...

That was Jennifer Nettles, the lead singer of the country band Sugarland, singing with John and James. She dueted with Jon Bon Jovi that song Who says you can't go Home.
-
got her... i was wondering if there was anyone of note in James's backup singers or where they just his normal backup singers..
-
I had a good time. We decided to go down last minute (left courthouse at 12:30) and got in at about 2:20 after waiting in line an hour. The metro going in was pretty empty and crowd walking down to the mall was great. I thought the whole show was surprisingly fun. The sound was problematic between the PA on the reflecting pool and the PA to the south but I think the logistics of having all these set up are pretty complicated and hard to do right. This was way better than the Millennium concert at the memorial back on new year's eve 1999.
-
Glad to see Pete Seeger...jesus, he can still walk at 89.
U2 not so much.....HAHA
-
was anyone else expecting bono to go off on some 5-minute monologue about gaza after that israeli/palestinian shout-out?
-
There were a lot of hokey moments, and Tom Hanks' reading was beyond awkward. "Pride in the Name of Love" is a beautiful song, and Bono should've just quit while he was ahead. But taken as a whole the event struck the right tone, I thought. And the symbolism of Pete Seeger, who was once on an anti-Communist blacklist, coming on right after Obama, was huge. "This Land is Your Land" was immensely moving -- although I never knew how many verses it had. To hear everyone singing along made me realize that we've finally taken this country back. This land was made for you and me.
-
The sound was terrible but I was pretty close and I'll be able to post them up on youtube. Too many people too and I was packed in there like a sardine. Overall it was ok at least I got to saw U2.
-
Ok, I've blogged with some details on yesterday and a few more pics:

allright peeps - can y'all answer a few questions for me??
we are thinking of heading down to the mall tomorrow but have a few important questions first
we know that strollers are not allowed on the Capitol grounds but think that they are allowed on the Mall? Is this assumption correct? If we try to enter through one of the checkpoints with a stroller are we likely to get hassle?
Also, is it correct to assume that you cannot enter the Mall without going through a security gate of some type? Even if you tried to enter way down at the Lincoln memorial?
-
Brennser,
I would think regardless of the rules, getting a stroller through compacted crowds could prove very difficult.
The Washington Post has a pretty good guide for tomorrow, including maps, entry points, and rules. Linky.

i don't care if your kid can't see. if you have them on your shoulders in front of me blocking my view and others behind you, where you don't care because "your" kid wants to see, i'm going to verbally thrash you and your punk, then finally push them off of you if you ignore me. stupid bitch.
-
Three questions:
1. Who do you think weighs more, Aretha or Stevie?
2. Will they make Bush fly coach on Southwest out of BWI?
3. How much coke will Bush have snorted by the time he hits Dallas?
-
can we ban charlie? i find his post offensive and disrespectful to our former president.

thanks Dr Doom - man this board has really gone to shit lately with the antics of a few morons
we did it and everything went fine - in fact we ended up with as good or better a vantage point than friends who had tickets but gave up trying to clear the security gates - drove down a deserted CT ave and parked in Dupont, strolled down to the mall - wonderful experience, so glad we did it
-
What a fiasco that was. Took forever to just to leave the place. They had fences up and people broke those down to get out then the cops tried to stop people who were getting out. All the people were fired up. Got it on vid so I'll post when I get a chance. Good ole DC for you.

i wonder how long it will take to clean up the town? i'm coming in for the weekend.
and just who are these morons? ???
-
I think they went way over the top with fences and crowd control. If they had just let people come and go from the mall at will, everything would have been fine.
But all in all it was a great day -- I wouldn't have missed it for anything.
I wrote some more about it and have added more photos here: http://dcalex.blogspot.com

No problems getting down to The Mall at all. We ended up about halfway between the Capitol and The Washington Monument. Right in the center. Getting out was a clusterf--k of major proportions. What a mess.
We know at least a few ticketed people who never made it in. They were at the security gates for hours and eventually gave up so they could go watch it on tv. They weren't terribly pleased.
-
Ticketing was a bad idea. I think it's been a practice for the last few inaugurals, but we pay taxes for those streets and for the mall. That shouldn't be for sale.
-
Weren't the tickets free?

A crowd welcomed the Bushes in Midland, waving red, white and blue W signs.
Country music performers Rodney Atkins, the Gatlin Brothers and Lee Greenwood performed until the former first family arrived.

Fucking slobs
Andrew Harnik/Examiner Soon after some 1.5 million visitors found their way off the National Mall and away from President Obama?s inaugural parade route Tuesday, hundreds of city and federal employees fanned out to collect the oceans of trash they left behind.
The D.C. Department of Public Works and the National Park Service picked up more than 90 tons of garbage in less than 12 hours following the inaugural festivities, said Nancee Lyons, DPW spokeswoman. On Wednesday there were still two garbage containers with capacities of 20 to 30 tons that had yet to be weighed, putting the potential total mess at roughly 260,000 pounds.
More than 100 city employees worked from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 5:30 a.m. Wednesday to clear much of what was left behind ? piles of newspaper, plastic bottles and food wrappers. The worst areas for trash, Lyons said, were K Street NW, Union Station and the Metro area off of Independence Avenue.
?They don?t see what it looks like after they leave,? Lyons said of the spectators. ?All that mess that was left behind, the next morning it?s clean. You don?t realize the work that goes into that.?
National Park Service crews were battling the garbage by hand Wednesday morning, using rakes to clear trash-clogged gutters and hand-held trash grabbers to pick up what remained. The park service had more than 300 maintenance workers and volunteers on the job all night, spokesman Bill Line said.
Also on the agenda: TV stands used by the cable news networks were broken down, and 5,500 porta-potties were emptied, though it will be days before all the johns are carted out of town.
As for the National Mall sod, Line said, it is ?not surprisingly in many locations noticeably damaged, but that?s to be expected with the number of people that were there.? It will be days before park service experts are able to fully assess damage to the grass and trees.
The record number of spectators also left behind a great deal at the checkpoints that the U.S. Secret Service would not allow past the gates. On 12th Street NW just south of Pennsylvania Avenue Tuesday morning, uneaten apples and oranges littered the ground.
?If you can throw a shoe, you can throw an apple,? one agent told a young woman who was forced to sacrifice her snack before entering the parade route Tuesday.
City officials had anticipated a $47 million price tag for the event, triple what Congress allocated to the inauguration in the 2009 budget. Former President George W. Bush declared an emergency in the District for the inaugural festivities, opening the door for federal funds to flow for ?for certain emergency protective measures.? D.C. officials hadn?t come up with a final count as of Wednesday.
?The city without a vote delivered for the nation,? D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton said Wednesday in a statement. ?Everywhere I went people complimented the city, and I intend to see to it that the District gets reimbursed for every cent it spent.?
Maryland expected to spend about $12 million and Virginia more than $16 million for the inaugural if Federal Emergency Management Agency or other federal funds didn?t come through. Neither state had heard from the feds as of Wednesday.
D.C. officials took the controlled chaos in stride ? of course, they were all safely tucked away in City Hall at 14th and Pennsylvania Avenue. When they needed to go out, say, to the Capitol grounds, they were escorted by police.
?Unprecedented,? said Council Chairman Vincent Gray. ?That?s all I can say. Just monumental.?
Besides the large numbers of transit passengers and pedestrians, D.C.?s neighboring counties suffered little in terms of spillover effect from the inaugural festivities, officials said.
?It was really smooth,? said Diana Sun, Arlington County spokeswoman. ?I don?t think we could have asked for smoother from our end.?

I prefer people who trash our mall for one day, to people who trashed our country for eight years.
