I just wanted to say that BR549 and The Mavericks put on a terrific show Saturday night. I hope you'll have them back again.

Taking my Mum to this show tonight. Should be interesting. Usually the music I share with her scares her.

AS much as I love BR549 and am digging their new album, $35 per ticket was too expensive.
Plus, the new Mavericks album is a real stinker.
-
Well the show was fantastic, and I look forward to seeing the Mavericks again at SXSW. What a voice that guy's got! The new album is more produced than I prefer, but the live show rocked, and their new guitar player Eddie Perez [who I first saw playing in honkytonk hottie James Intveld's band a few years ago] is top-notch. BR549 rocked the house as always, and looked damn sharp while doing it too. They're at SXSW also, can't wait to see 'em again. You're in for a treat tonight Grotty.

Thx for the mini review. Gotta get there in time for BR549. That night @ Stubbs during SXSW (Mavs, Patty Griffin, Old 97's & Los Lobos) is going to be a good one.

How was attendance? And how long did BR549 play for?

The house was good. Not so many people that we had to make everybody stand but enough people to create quite a din. The Mavericks seemed to be having a blast.
BR549 did around 45. They may have done a little shorter than they had originally planned as the singer's voice was a little hurtin'.

Attendance was decent but not sold out, i.e. comfortable to move around the club but plenty of people to show the bands some love. BR549 played a blistering 45-minute set. Just got their new CD in the mail today, can't wait to hear it. The Mavs played longer than their scheduled time, which was fine by me. Their tour manager said it was the first time they had done that on the tour, so I guess that means they were having a good time. I wish I could see the show tonight too.
-
I think you will like the new BR549 disc. Much better than their last one, which blew. Actually, it's probably my favorite disc of theirs. Saw them at the Birchmere last time around...the new guys, Chris Scruggs, and Geoff Firebaugh (guitar and bass) really have given them new energy. Chris Scruggs is just a joy to watch, and so much talent at only 21...

Oh I know I'll like it...they played some songs off it at the show that I thought were great. Besides, the Dualtone press release that came with it says that "if anyone doesn't like this, then frankly, there's something wrong with them".

Good, good show last night. If you didn't walk out smiling, you've got problems.
Malo is amazing. As a pure vocalist, I'm struggling to think of someone better (even if you don't like his style). The only comparison I have is Jeff Buckley. Very different, but both utilize(d) their voice as the most potent instrument on the stage.
Highlights were his solo set & the encore with the boys from BR5-49. It was Last Waltzesque.
(Scruggs is too cool)
Plus it was fun to rock out with Mum.
She brought this lame George Harrison tribute video though and made me suffer through it late night. So I broke out some real vids and sent her scurrying to bed.

from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazzette:
concert review (http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/04071/283992.stm)
Outside the mainstream, country music can be as wild as the West and as deep as the South, with a thousand cultural influences and unlimited possibilities. In one of Pittsburgh's best country concerts of recent years, the Mavericks showed a full Byham Theater what country can sound like when it's elevated to art.
No living singer sounds anything like Raul Malo. The power and nuance are staggering...

I thought the price a bit steep for this one. Hope to see BR later this year. I'm sure it was a fine set by both bands. Some of you on this thread may be interested in this festival. I'm going to be attending since I have friends in Richmond. Grotty, you may find the link interesting.....

the thought of living in Kansas sent chills down my spine, I don't think you would want to live there if you went there

I think he'd love it! Definitely as nice, if not nicer, than Virginia. It should be given serious consideration.

The guy on the Fulks board from Lawrence, KS (where the festival is taking place) makes it sound ok (I myself actually wouldn't want to move there...too far from the mountains and ocean):
lawrence...
first of and foremost, it's the home of the kansas jayhawks. seeing a basketball game in allen fieldhouse is a must.
it's got a terrific music scene that surely tops any other midwest college town. it's got the bottleneck, the replay lounge, the granada, and for the bigger shows, liberty hall. all downtown.
the downtown's nice. local shops and restaurants line mass street. rudy's pizza, free state brewery and la familia are good eats.
drawbacks ... it's a college town. maybe i'm getting old, i've been here 7 years now, but the crowds at shows tend to run high on the "hipster" scale i guess. it keeps me from some shows, but not all.
it's a nice place though, worth a visit.

Can it hurt to try it out??

the main reason I want nothing to do with Kansas!
actually since Lawrence is a college town it probably would be my choice if I had to live in Kansas, but I have heard nothing good about it
Missouri plays Kansas (their biggest rival) tonight in the Big 12 tournament

What, the Atkins diet?

You're famous for non-sequiturs. Kansas, would it hurt to try out living in Kansas.

mizzou played like crap last night. if they have to struggle to beat winless a&m, i shudder to think about what kansas will do to mizzou. mizzou needs to beat kansas to make it to the tournament. espn projects that there are 3-4 at large openings left, and 8-9 teams possible, including mizzou.

have you watched this year, thats what they do, play like crap, although the games are normally close, they played kansas close for most of the game last week, kansas really is not that great this year, they are pretty inconsistent

the fiancee can't stand to watch mizzou games because a) they don't put quin on tv enough, and b) they are terribly inconsistent. . .one week they beat osu and the next they lose to division 2 belmont. i mean, mizzou was a pre-season top 10, and they are struggling to make it to the tournament. course, the same thing happened a few years ago when they we're the last team picked, got a 12 seed and made it to the elite 8.

Basketball fans eh?
Try to catch a little of the Pitt game tonight (@ 7). They are a fun team to watch. 5 highly likeable guys who play the game the way it's supposed to be played. No superstars, just a good solid team that plays defense like the Steeler Steel Curtain.
Now that I PR'd for them, they'll probably lay an egg.
