Title: The Best Covers
Post by: Sage 703 on May 06, 2009, 10:38:59 am
I'm sure this thread has been done in the past, but I'm too lazy to find it and I'm sure there are new covers to offer up.  So what do you guys have?  If you've got links - even better.

Found this for the first time yesterday, although I'm sure it is at least five years old at this point:

Iron & Wine - Waitin' For A Superman

I've always liked his version of Peng 33: http://hypem.com/track/600089/Iron+Wine+-+Peng+33

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Stagger Lee

Probably my fave cover ever.  He also does a nice "In the Ghetto".

Husker Du's "Eight Miles High" is another obvious choice.

"Stagger Lee" probably is as good as it gets.

Flower Travellin' Band - "Black Sabbath" (no link)
Their cover of "House of the Rising Sun" is pretty badass, too.

!!! - Take Ecstacy with Me

Love the recorded version but I've heard they've failed miserably when they tried to do it live.

25 Best Cover Songs of 2008 (http://www.hypeful.com/2008/12/23/25-best-cover-songs-of-2008/) has a nice little selection.  my favs:

- calico horse's take on "idioteque" (sweet acoustic/vocal arrangement)
- flaming lips covering the who
- radiohead doing neil young (pers fav, as i was 15 feet away when they performed this... magical moment)
- gnarl's take on "reckoner"
- max vernon doing katy perry

not saying these are the best, but they are good.

that oak ridge boys boys cover is indeed great.

The Japanese project Fantastic Plastic Machine did a great synth-lounge cover of "Steppin' Out" on the 1998 album "The Fantastic Plastic Machine."

Wait...Stagger Lee isn't really a cover.  That's a bit of a stretch.

True. I guess it's more of a re-telling than a cover. The Furry Lewis version on that People Take Warning comp is awesome, too.

How do you figure?

It uses the same story as a bunch of other songs but as far as I know, the Cave version is completely different lyrically and musically from any of the others.

Anyone remember the "best remixes" thread???
Title: Re: The Best Covers
Post by: Samantha on May 06, 2009, 04:39:31 pm
Yeah, it's a retelling of a classic story, there's lots of Stagger/Stack/Stag-o Lee songs.  I think it's supposed to be based on other writings but it's still mostly original.  I believe.  I mean, show me another version of Nick Cave's Stagger Lee, and prove me wrong...

It's kind of like calling Johnny Cash's Delia a cover.

This is an interesting covers cd:

"Don't Know When I'll be Back Again"
http://exoticfever.com/music.php?task=showrelease&id=6

Death Cab, Beauty Pill, Ted Leo, Enon and a bunch of others covering Vietnam-era classic rock tracks.

The Death Cab cover is pretty interesting - "Fortunate Son."  I wouldn't have expected Ben Gibbard to be able to pull it off....and it turns out he didn't.  Sean Nelson from Harvey Danger fronts the band.  Sort of a "meh" version, but an interesting idea, if nothing else.

Yeah i read the same article....

guess it's not really a cover...but i really want a redux of the remix thread so lets fight about it.

It is too a cover.  You'll never convince me otherwise.

Death Cab doing "Fortunate Son"?  Ugh.

[EDIT] Just listened thanks to callat's link.  Whew...at least they didn't let Gibbard sing it.  That song needs BALLS, not a singer that sounds like he was born without them.
