I am really enjoying the streaming songs from the upcoming album (okay, upcoming US release of existing album). Maybe I'll have to catch the Iota Fleshtones show so I can hit the Snow Patrol at Black Cat on April 17th....
Album and show info and streaming link here (http://www.bigyawn.net/index.htm), scroll down to 2-27-04 for good info.

Ahoy everyone~
As some of you may or may not know, my band "Cartel" will be playing a gig Friday March 26 @ the Velvet Lounge.
We've been told two other bands will be on the bill and we have the middle slot. We should be playing at about 10-10:15pm.
Anywho, the whole band would appreciate it if you would come along and please feel free to bring as many people as you want....
info on the Velvet Lounge: www.velvetloungedc.com (http://www.velvetloungedc.com)
Hope to see you all there.... Cheerios,
Cartel.

I guess they must be playing the back stage, since Beauty Pill is playing the main stage on 4/17. I recently picked up "Songs For Polar Bears" and like it a lot.
I definitely want to check them out, but I've missed Beauty Pill the last couple times they played and swore that I'd do whatever was necessary to see them next time around. Throw the Fleshtones into the mix and there's just no way to hit everything that weekend.
April is turning into another month jam-packed with shows.
-
I saw Beauty Pill play somewhere last fall...I wasn't impressed...wonder if I missed something. But, either way, I'll be Snow Patrolling or Fleshtoning that night.
-
Really? I can only think of one show we're going to in April...and one in March.

Well, I've already for tix to 4 shows in the first half of April and I'm hoping to hit 2 of the 3 shows listed above (Beauty Pill/Fleshtones/Snow Patrol). That's 6 shows in the first 2 weeks or so. That's a lot more than I usually go to, and there's still half a month left.
-
Skeeter, what do you have tickets for? I haven't gotten any April tix yet (except GBV in New York...)

But you have a specific preference to only go to one show a month or so. So you never have "jam packed" months.

4/2 - WSC @ Black Cat
4/3 - Death Cab @ 9:30
4/4 - Bob Dylan @ Warner Theater
4/6 - The Darkness @ 9:30
Actually, I'm picking up the WSC tickets on Monday, but i'm 100% certain that I'm going to that show.
-
Busy week for Skeeter!
I forgot, I have Death Cab tix.
I'll probably go to WSC -- Fridays are always good for that.
You certainly picked up tix to shows that sold well! Way to go...a friend of mine at the Warner said that second added show sold out lickety split.
-
Snow Patrol have moved to the 930 club. Which is interesting, since I would not think they were near big enough to headline the club. Which means they may be opening, but for whom?
-
Wow. Same night?
Might be a fun way to do an opener and then DC9 DJ night....
Or, catch one of the gazillion other bands that night.
-
Perhaps Ratdog has added a third show.

It actually starts on 3/31 with Ratdog.

The Dylan show? It's not sold out yet. Very close though.

I would think so. Snow Patrol should bring out all of the Brit Rockers. In fact, if I'm understanding the original booking correctly, I find it absurd that Snow Patrol would even be considered for the Backstage instead of the Mainstage. They have way too much of a following for that. With that said, I do not think that they will by any means sell out the 9:30 Club. Should be a nice but comfortable crowd.
I love Final Straw as much, if not more, than their previous works.
-
I listened to about half the Snow Patrol album today, sounds like Semisonic has a new album, don't care for it much
-
I LOVE Snow Patrol, particularly the songs "Run," "Chocolate" and "Half The Fun."
OK - so when and where exactly is their live show (is it April 17th, indeed)? Snow Patrol is not listed in the web site schedules of either the 9.30 Club schedule nor The Black Cat schedule.
I don't want to miss them play! ;)
Cheers

-
Medusa, the April 17 9:30 Club date is on the Snow Patrol site. I think that's a 'certain' as we can get right now.
-
I will not be able to attend the Snow Patrol show. Well will be in Martinsville, VA for the NASCAR race the next day. I know y'all will miss us.
-
They previewed Snow Patrol on BBC world service yesterday afternoon....I liked what I heard. I had to laugh at a comment made by one of the reviewers. Some magazine had called Snow Patrol "the new Coldplay" so the one bloke said words to the effect, "How can you compare these to Coldplay, unless they mean they will become succesful in America. You don't have to be good to be successful in America, in fact many times the opposite is true. You just have to be marketable to be successful in America. Snow Patrol are much better than Coldplay so that may very well hinder them in the USA."
-
And here's our answer on the Snow Patrol D.C. show....
9:30 club
Sa 4/17 Sugar Ray Early Show! 6pm Doors
Sa 4/17 Snow Patrol Late Show! 10pm Doors
-
Where's that Psuedo Scouse Twat? He should give us a review from the show the other night.
I did hear from someone else that the Manchester show was very good; and that was from someone who wasn't impressed from the album.
Yeah Medussa, "Run" is a great song. ;)

I can't wait for the gig here! :)

I love run.....what a great song
the rest of the album is very good..might have to try to come down for that show
-
A new video (http://www.nme.com/features/story.htm?ID=107945) for "Chocolate" from Snow Patrol.
-
yeah, can't wait to see snow patrol.....wonder if they will break out any reindeer section songs

If anyone is looking for the domestic copy release of Snow Patrol's "Final Straw" CD, I saw lots (9-10 copies) at Olsson's downtown (418 7th Street, N.W.) for the cool price of $9.98. Me, I'm still on the lookout for the import copy with 2 extra songs, including "Half The Fun."
I'm listening to their cover of "Crazy In Love" right now. What does everyone think of this one? Do they dare play it live?! Might be ... silly. ;)
Cheers

Final Straw is one of Best Buys featured CDs this week. While you'll have to live with the guilt of being one of the final nails in the coffin of the independent music retailer, it is only $6.99.
-
thanks, i shall get a copy on monday, no guilt.

Final Straw is $6.89 with free shipping at deepdiscountcd.com. Standard disclaimers apply. Be prepared to wait 7-10 days before you receive it though.

Sorry, I meant the Snow Patrol for $6.99. Not interested in Courtney Love.

There's a LOT I don't like, but I don't find the need to dis on music that other folks like a lot. Yes, you can find the occasional "blech" from me, or queries as to why so-and-so is such a big deal around here, but in general if I don't like a band I stay out of the discussion...Modest Mouse being a great example.
-

Yeah, I pretty much stayed off of that thread too for the same reason.

It looks like it's still on sale today. Best Buy in Rockville appears to be sold out of them, but there's still one of those cards on the rack that lists the $6.99 price.
-
thanks, skeeter...I'll check Pentagon City...
-
I just called Best Buy and the sale is good through midnight on Saturday, providing that there is still stock within the stores. This means, yes, if you go to the store on Saturday and it's still available, you will get it for $6.99. This is true for all Baltimore/DC/NOVA locations. Actually, if I remember correctly, nationwide.
You're welcome. ;)
I've had a burn of the promo since mid Sept., which means it's time for me to schlep my butt out and buy myself a copy.
-
According to bestbuy.com, the tenleytown store has it in stock, you can just order it online and select store pickup.
-
gosh you people are cheaper than I am.
Just drink five beers at the show instead of six, and you'll be able to afford the stupid album at Ollsens or some other fine independent retailer rather than forking your dough over to an evil corporate giant like Best Buy.

Where's the tenleytown store? Is that in the old Sears location?

That link didn't work, but I can look up.
I haven't picked up the album yet. Maybe they'll have some at the show.
-
so whats the story with tickets for snow patrol on saturday
it will probably be a last minute call for me as to whether I go - is this likely to sell out?
-
I'd say no way, brennser. I think it'll be one of those coupla hundred Saturday night shows, which leaves lots of room for dancing and a high likelihood that Markie's heckles will be heard by the band...
-
ROLL CALL!!
I'm going with clovette and likely others...
PS- I hate to bring it up, but I started talking about Snow Patrol before anyone else did on this board, so anyone who goes should owe me a beer or something.
-
I'm going! Looking for some pre-show libations, pm me.
And redsock, there's something about being told I *owe* someone a beer.... :p

Yea, I'm glad you are doing the roll call now as the weekend is slow here. I will be there. Cds in hand in lieu of a beer, redsock?
-
I heard them a couple of years ago, but didn't find them good enough to bring up on the board. Figured I would have been heckled for liking some semi-obscure band, like I often am.

FYI, if you're in the 'hood and want to either check her out or see if you want to hit the 9:30 Club tomorrow night to see her open for Snow Patrol:

Great show. I've been loving the album, but only for a week, so I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the show. Band was way in to it, as was the crowd in a "more than your DC norm" way. They played well, jumped around a lot, had fun and seemed genuinely happy at such a good reception. Not a crowded show, but a healthy one for (1) a late show, and (2) a band in DC for the first time.
The band said they're coming back in September, likely to 9:30 again.
-

A friend remarked when the come back, he suspects they will sell out. It was nice to see people coming out of the woodwork for them. Seems as though they have a long following from some. The band definitely seemed happy and maybe a little suprised (as did Carina) at the reception. They definitely "rocked it out" further then their cd, as I hoped they might. They seem pretty tight playing together, vocals, sound were great. I lent a friend my cd, I already want it back. Was the last song off of their first album?
-
goodness me such a good wee show!! i was pleasantly surprised by the turnout, not to mention their excellent performance. not many bands could recover as well amidst technical glitches. and how cute they are...sigh.
-
er not very?
-
A surprisingly good show when it was rocking. It got kind of slow in the middle, but it ended very strongly.
I think just barely missed Carina. I arrived at the club at 11:45pm, as I had other plans earlier in the evening and had a long commute from the 'burbs. How was she? Should I buy her CD?
-
she was shite, dont buy the cd unless you like second rate tracey bonham cack.
-
pity I missed what seemed like a good show - by the time I should have been heading out to 9.30, the whiskey bottles were out and there was no going back....
-
Carina.....
Imagine a combinaton of Alannah Myles and Evenessence, now distill the worst parts of both......
Snow Patrol were rather Travis like, but Travis at their best..... hopefully they wont become as dull. I was quite surprised how good they were.

From the Post:
Snow Patrol
The world would be a better place if power pop bands would heed philosopher Francis Bacon, who concluded, "There is no excellent beauty that hath not some strangeness in the proportion." Take Scotland's Snow Patrol, for example. Frontman Gary Lightbody -- who also moonlights in the Reindeer Section -- sets his choirboy voice to drop-dead melodies to make flawless -- perhaps too-flawless -- music.
That seems to have changed on Snow Patrol's excellent new album "Final Straw," however. And as Lightbody -- who apologized for his brogue, promising "next time I'll bring subtitles" -- demonstrated Saturday at the 9:30 club, he isn't afraid to sacrifice prettiness for raw power. So much raw power, indeed, that on its penultimate song Snow Patrol temporarily shorted out the power, blowing the lights (the emergency lights kicked on) and microphones.
Lightbody isn't your typical shoe-gazer, preferring to twitch about the stage during the madly catchy "Run," the irresistible "Chocolate" and the fast-paced "Spitting Games." Snow Patrol didn't neglect to play a few painfully romantic songs (but in a good -- as opposed to Eric Carmen -- way), such as "An Olive Grove Facing the Sea" and "When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up." It also displayed some nice harmony singing, especially on "Same" and "Somewhere a Clock Is Ticking."
But the evening's highlight was "Ways and Means," a surprisingly funky tune -- the funk and the kilt, together at last! -- that had Lightbody singing, "Baby I can do it if I put my back into it." Given the surprisingly large and enthusiastic crowd who cheered his every move Saturday, he's right.
-- Michael Little

That's a good article. Can't wait to see them again.
Carina...um, I respect her guitar playing on the last song. She's a pretty beatnik (sp?) rocker..I thought she looked like Meredith Brooks behind her big guitar...Two songs to the end, her voice had some deepness and anger similar to Dolores O'Riordan/Cranberries, "Zombie". Would I buy her album? NO.
-

Yep...... She looked great when she was singing that. Shame it was pap.

mark you were turned on by the kevin keegan perm she had, memories of keegan on superstars came flooding back to you.....it was a lovely perm.
