So, I get that sounding shitty is cool right now, and that for some, it's an aesthetic choice. But does this kid purposefully make his live show sound shitty too? I mean, Times New Viking sounds pretty raw on tape, but they don't add in a lot of pointless noise, reverb and echo live to sound the same way. Am I missing something? I've only just heard my first Wavves song today.

Shit is the new Shine-ola.
-
He's absolutely dreadful in every regard.
I think his popularity started with some dickhead blogger or two praising him and shit spun out of control from there. Blog hype might be the worst thing to happen to music since LiveNation.

One of the people I follow on twitter said some along the lines of if I hear one more album recorded on My First Sony I'm going to yak
-
we skipped his set at pitchfork and i overheard a few people talking about how awful it was... i don't really get it either.

So does this mean this Wavves kid isn't as bad as I think? Or should I think that Zach Hill just needs a paycheck?

This just put Brian Chippendale ahead of Hill in the "best drummer alive" category.
WTF, Zach Hill?
-
i like zach hill just fine, but brian chippendale is better. and i say this as a drummer.
also, just because those guys are fast and spazzy doesn't mean they are the best drummers out there. the tone, rhythm, and textures of improv jazz percussionists like milford graves, han bennink, and rashied ali (and chris corsano for a more accurate generational comparison) are far superior to the one-dimensional caterwauling of hill and chippendale.
oh, and wavves is still bullshit.
-
Yeah, I knew I'd catch heat for that one. :)
-
This board manages to debate pretty much every possible thing under the sun, but we all seem to coalesce on one fact: wavves suck.
-
You're wrong there.
DFA1979 has admitted to liking him.
Speaking of which, he hasn't been around these parts lately.

How dare you label DFA1979 as "one of us"? He's not a person like the rest of us!

Joe *might* be a closet fan.
WilcoDude: i wanna go to wavves
azaghal1981: why?
WilcoDude: just to see him breakdown
azaghal1981: please tell me it's because you want to throw stuff at him
azaghal1981: oh ok
azaghal1981: and if he doesn't?
azaghal1981: you'll have paid for a bunch of shitty music
WilcoDude: then nothing
You be the judge(s).

The one song I heard was fine or whatever...it just seems that filtered through his shitty "low-fi" bullshit and his fucking attitude (and his haircut), I want to smash him in the face.

So I went back and re-listened to every album released in 2009 that I picked up, and I'm starting to feel sorry for that Wavves kid. If he had just released an "I'm So Bored"/"No Hope Kids" double A-side and nothing else, all mysterious stylee, I might have thought he was fucking awesome. I don't care what you think...those two songs are pretty catchy, and I'd probably be all "Holy Shit! If this single is this radical, think of how killer everything else is gonna be!"
It's not really his fault, I guess. If I put out an album and bloggers went apeshit trying to be the ones to break me first, I'd probably buy into it too and throw together an album to capitalize.
I still hate his fucking haircut, though.
-
azagh hates him because of blog hype. He admitted it this morning. I bet you he hasn't even listened to wavves.

Way to mangle what I said. Or just be too slow to understand it.
I used Wavves as an example of why I've shied away from blog-hyped bands as of late. 95% of what I heard due to recommendations from a blog turned out to be shit upon listening so I figured that the law of averages was against my caring for the next indie buzz band.
-
I'm not sure Joe understands that hype != good.
I think the bigger concern isn't that they bands that are hyped are shit; it's more that they're hyped way too early and can't develop. I quit reading most blogs about a year or so ago, because it was more a race to be the first to break someone than it was highlighting actual talent. Wavves seems to be exactly that.

Excellently put.
That may be the case with a lot of these bands but it's hard to say because as you said, they're thrust into the limelight too quickly.
-
some hype is good.
i did enjoy debut albums by CYHSY, Vampire Weekend, and Tapes 'n Tapes. These albums were hyped heavily but I think they are good and fun albums.
I also liked Yeasayer's debut...i'm not even sure if they were hyped by blogs or not.
