So....who's going? Isn't it about time for them to release a new CD? Maybe we'll get some new tunes.
-
I'm Spoon-ing that night. Otherwise I try to hit all the WSC shows around town...
-
hopefully i'll get to go, but i dunno.
it's three of my favorite local bands on one bill...yessssssssss-s-s-s-s-s
everybody on the planet should go to this show.
-
i'll be at spoon.
WSC is what i'd call a big yawn.
-
Spoon Schmoon. WSC for me.
-
wsc is alright, but spoon is for the children.
-
I saw them once and boy did I not like them. Just not my type of music I guess.
Hysterically bad bassist. Couldnt hear a thing. Maybe it wasnt turned on.
-
can someone explain to me the appeal of any of the bands on this bill? actually don't even try w/army of me, cuz it won't do any good. but i just don't get wsc ... it's like if carl newman wrote songs after having a labotomy or something. but lots of people i know who like (at least sorta) good music like them...
-
"it's like if carl newman wrote songs after having a labotomy or something. but lots of people i know who like (at least sorta) good music like them..."
that's a good one, and i agree. i'm definitly not keen on any of them.
-
I'll explain the appeal: it's like a train wreck. I'll be there tonight, not because I like any of the bands (and to be honest, will be sure to miss one of them), but because I want to see the train wreck that is the DC music scene.

Man, you have a bad attitude. You will always find what you seek: Obviously, shitty music. The more these emerging bands play, the better they get...it's a process. Be patient. BTW: Why would you waste your money? You could just stay home and do an "at-home" Brazilian bikini wax, non? Be sure to talk loudly all the way thru the whole evening - and smoke a lot. I'll be there standing next to you trying to hear my friends perform.
:D
-
I don't have a bad attitude. I respect all music, whether it is good or bad. Yes, the more bands play, the better they get. That's where we agree. But you won't see me sitting on the couch tonight, getting your Brazilian wax....you'll see me at the Black Cat supporting local music, whether I like the bands or not, because that's what DC really needs.
I don't usually smoke, but I will tonight, just for you.
-
Damn right lost soul...I couldn't agree more.
These bands are local, so I will support the local music night...That is about it.
-
I admit that I've never heard Spoon before and I think I've used up all favours for getting into sold out shows at the club. So WSC it is for me.
I can understand people not getting into WSC. I really don't like Marty's voice but I think the music is fun and infectious. Olivia's nice to look at. Tix are only $12. Sounds like a deal to me!
Everyone have fun whatever you end up doing.
-
Local they may be, but far from inconsequential. You guys act like these are bands that are just playing there first non-basement show. Both WSC and Exit Clov play out a lot, up and down the East Coast and beyond. I'm not a big Army of Me fan, but I think tonite is a good showcase of two bands who don't really fall into the local "scene."
WSC's music isn't exactly new and original, but their live show is great. I won't tout the plethora of reasons to see the Clov (due to my obvious bias) but along with Cartel they are one of the best bands to come out of DC in the past couple of years. We need bands trying different things, bands that don't fit in the DC good-old boys netowrk. Tonite is a good example of some bands who have done that and are beginning to see some success.

You don't call that a bad attitude?
This is a great triple-bill. It should be a really fun night.

Okay, explain this. What train wreck (that implies an explosion of some sort)? If you just don't like the bands, I think your characterization is way off. Look, WSC is a popular local band. NO local band, no matter how great, be they Coldplay, U2 or WSC, is going to be loved or even liked by everyone. Is any band?
Sheesh, I just don't get where the hate comes from...so unnecessary.

Seriously, then are you one of the people in the audience that comes to the club but treats the whole night like a social scene, even during the headline act? If so, DC does NOT need that...

I don't know...unlike many of the 'big buzz' bands coming out of the UK and Brooklyn, I don't automatically think of a particular band they're ripping off during each song...
And you're right, Cartel, Exit Clov and WSC would make an amazing triple bill -- work on that!!

Wow, you missed the point completely. When I say I'll be at the Black Cat to SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC, it means I'll be there to support the music, not talk over top of it.
-
I hate Army of Me, and the hate comes from their music, but I will be at the kids show, Spoon

Sorry, it was a question, honestly. I believe the loud chatterers think they're supporting local music as well, since they paid their $10 to get in...I didn't mean to harsh on a music fan. [Though I'm not sure I get why you go to a show with bands you don't like...]

ill take phaser as one of the best bands as coming from DC recently (and surely they dont sound like everyone else). not a fan at all of WSC (really dont get the hype).
i saw bicycle thieves perform once, fell in love with them. now if only i could find them around here a bit more. and those guys were some of the nicest people i met.
-
my top four favorite local bands as of late are these three, and the soft complex. of course everybody is going to have a difference in opinion, but for ME, and some others, this is a great triple bill. army of me and wsc have played together before, so i think it's great that exit clov is getting a shot too--they are really great.
i unfortunately won't be around tonight, because the guy i was gonna go with has another obligation... :(
i was wondering, though. why do a lot of you guys hate army of me so much? i mean, they have progressed A LOT in the last year...
-
The whole Army of Me phenom fascinates me. People HATE them or love them. I'm in the middle, which puts me in a very lonely place. Just fascinating...
-
yeah, i know, right?
a lot of people just don't like vince's voice (i love it) but i mean, there has been some slander here. there has got to be something else they don't like...
-
I also dont like that they get so many prime opening slots at the black cat, and the music, it is mostly the music that I hate, the first part just means i am forced to accidentally hear the music if I show up too early
I hate Army of Me's music and that there fans leave before the headliner even comes on stage
-
SOME of their fans might leave - others don't.
-
yeah, i was about to say.
i actually found out about army of me when i went to see ok go almost two years ago, and they were an opener.
AOM is a band that is very dear to me, and every time i've seen them they have opened for somebody else that i have really loved. i haven't been to a single one of their shows just to see them.
-
Well, as it turns out, I didn't mind Army of Me and was somewhat disappointed by WSC. I have yet to hear any new stuff that really grabs me. The crowd size dwindled as the set went on - perhaps they were Army of Me fans who didn't want to stay....or perhaps they were people like me who weren't really digging the new stuff.
Anyone else? What did you think of the WSC set?
-
I thought WSC were fine, although I thought the set was a little short. Given time, I think the new stuff will eventually gel. Didn't notice the crowd dwindling (I was up front), but I'm not surprised. That happens when the openers pull a decent crowd themselves. I don't think it really reflects badly on anything.
I liked Army of Me. Apparently, so do a lot of other people. They sure had a sizeable crowd there to see them.
I finally got to see Exit Clov and was duly impressed. Definitely a unique sound. Looking forward to seeing them again.
There was a huge turnout for this show. Glad to see such support for an all-DC bill.
-
While I had only a marginal time at the Spoon show, I'm kind of glad that I'm giving WSC a rest. I've seen them so many times, it may be worth holding off and checking them out when they've gotten tighter with new material. Of course, if they show up at Fort Reno, that's a must...
