dude . . . be lucky you didn't go to angkor. you would of been transported to another place and time, one that is outside our need to know the seal that connects mount meru. and the slushies aren't that great, either.

blah.

14. Lived in Indonesia for 2 years but never made it to Borobudur.

I've led a sheltered existence. Why the Petronas towers and not the Sears Tower? Where is the St.Louis gateway arch...how many of you have been to the top? Prague may be scenic, but Ursynów is a dystopian wonder that begs to be experienced. And what about Newark?

Angkor Wat is *amazing*. And actually there are more than a hundred temples in that area, and while Angkor Wat is the 'hollywood' temple, there are others that are more impressive (and less crowded with people).
I've been to at least 33 things on the list. It might be one or two more, because I can't remember everything.

Been to one, San Franscisco. WOW.

ooooh, me me me

13. Pretty mediocre. I'll be able to add the Great Wall of China, Forbidden City, and Qin Terra Cotta Warriors next week, though.
How you could have St Marks or St Basil's Cathedral yet not include Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is beyond me. And there are the Mayan ruins at Tikal. Amazing.
An interesting list.
-
16....thank god I lived in Egypt for 6 months, otherwise it would have been much worse!
-
26 for me, most recently the Hermitage which was amazing. I'll be up to 30 after my next trip in the spring.
-
Only 11, with maybe 10 or so more that interest me.
Most aren't worth the expense and hassle of getting to.

Same here and the really embarrassing part is that I use to be a travel agent.
Seems they concentrated in some areas while totally ignoring others. Could have helped some of us rack up a few extra points. What about Wailea(sp?) Falls in Kona, Hawaii or New Orleans before it sank? Hey, what about the US Capitol or other DC area sites? We take it for granted but others come from many, many miles just to see those things.

Amen sister!

Where is the Giant's Causeway (http://www.geographia.com/northern-ireland/ukiant01.htm)? Fractal geometry in nature. All Led Zep fans are encouraged to visit.

yup, I had wondered about that omission

i actually thought it was a pretty cool list because it wasn't completely western-centric, there's a pretty solid amount of non-western "wonders" on that list, which is pretty rare for these types of things ... is the US Capitol that much more incredible than Big Ben/Palace of Westminster or that Italian type-writer thingy, or countless other big-ass parliament/executive buildings?
-
I have no problem at all with them being global. It should be. My issue is that it's, if anything, anti-Western.
Hey, if they can put San Franscisco, why not DC? Just look at the detailed and Old World Masonic detailed layout. There is plenty here to marvel over regardless of one's politics or cultural background. Plus, what about poor New Orleans? We will probably never see it return to it's old glory. Don't forget the Caribbean either. Some beautiful places down there and one of the top coffees in the entire world comes from high atop Jamaica's Blue Mountain. Don't think they included anything like Denali National Forest either of parts or Canada.
Personally, I'd love to visit and jump in one of the hot springs in Antartica but that's not on the list either and it's quite out of the norm. (I know it's not Western. I'm globe hopping.)

i agree with you on that one, "San Francisco" seems like an odd choice

well, they had Banff National Park in Canada and "Antarctic Cruise" (http://www.hillmanwonders.com/antarctic_cruise/itineraries.htm#_vtop) with the hot springs on there
i liked how they included some more not-so-obvious choices, like Santorini over some of the bigger-named Greek islands ... anyway, a fun time-waster ... anyone else have "1000 Place to See Before You Die"? it can be a little cheesy, but it's another fun read

Yeap, you're right. (I was going from memory on a quick glance through.)
I agree with you about noting Santorini over Athens or Mykonos, the more common Greek attractions.
I'd have to include the Nazca Lines in South America on my list. Also, a few crop circles in the English countryside during crop circle season which is right about now. Of course, helicoptor rides would be required for both for viewing.
Also, I really want to spend an entire day in the South of France at a vinyard or two and then spend a few hours dining afterwards.
-
I would've prefered Mepos.

23 - and im still pondering whats wrong with the inclusion of SF. I lived in that area most my life, and while DC maybe should be included because of the Capitol, SF has plenty of history and breathtaking sites there as well. From Chinatown to Golden Gate Park, the Japanese tea gardens, the mission district, Haight-Ashbury, and of course the Castro (hell there is still so much more), I dont think DC holds a candle to that great city.
Hell New York doesnt either, and I live here now. But there is nothing like the NYC skyline that I see out my window every night.
just my $.02

I'm sure that Hoya will agree with me that the inclusion of SF isn't a problem, it's more the omission of a few other North American sites. Besides, they could have at least entered a particular aspect of SF rather than the entire city like they did for most of the other locations. Would have made it more detailed and interesting to read. For example, the entire city of Paris is fascinating and contains lots of charm but they choose to note specific sites rather than the entire city.

yeah, exactly, it's not really worth picking nits here, but "San Francisco" just seemed a bit out of place among all these "wonders" of the world, nothing against the city at all, i'm sure it's incredible
jag, i didn't realize you were so into supernatural conspiracy stuff, were you our secret chemtrail (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemtrail_theory) enthusiast?

HELL, NO!!!
Though I know tons of stuff about them and have even seen many of the oily dripping rainbow producing ones, I don't know where I stand on the issue and I really don't feel like having that kind of debate in here. Believe me, there's a lot you don't know about me. :D
