Thank you. I got a bit lucky though, as no shameful selections popped up. I was just waiting for a Tatu or Dave Matthews Band or Sleater-Kinney song to pop up. I've 8,976 songs to pick from, so there's some crap in there.

I'm just wondering....why in God's name would anyone want to carry 9,000,000,000 songs with them? I mean, when are you ever going to listen to them all without going back home?
I suppose it's just techonology, and folk want technology wether it's really useful or not.
Enjoy your toys though....no harm done I suppose.

Well, I hated carrying a back-pack full of CD's. And the content of my mp3 player is still maybe only half of my actual CD's. The rest are sitting in milk crates in my closet. I tend to go back and listen to things I haven't heard in a while just like I did when I carried a backpack full of CD's.

Because if I'm out for a few hours, I have my entire music collection at my disposal. When I'm out for a long drive, or running or hiking, and I get the urge to hear Neu! then Carole King then Ween then Maiden and then Mingus, I can. Because of the iPod, the wall of CDs that took up so much space in the living room has been put away. No CDs in the car or backpack either.
Besides, some of these iPods have a lot of memory, so why not use it? I just move everything on to it in order to keep my hard drive relatively clear.

Besides, that's just random 10. Perhaps Chance's next ten includes Belle & Sebastien, Trans Am and Yo La Tengo. That legitmizes them, right?

So I did the shuffle and now my iPod is broke. It says it has like 6 gigs of music on it... But when I go thru the menus of artists, albums, playlists, suddenly it is all wiped clean. Has tis happened to anyone? I haven't plugged it in to the computer or anything, because that crashed too a few days before. My brother backed up my music on DVDs thankfully. Any idea what happend to the pod?
-
With 5000+ songs, some crap is bound to come up.
I have no shame about what guilty pleasures are on my iPod :)

Yea - that's the worst - I hate it too. But my need for immediate gratification has caused me to use the store.
When I buy anything from iTunes - I make one MASTER copy & mark it as such. Then if I ever need to make copies I do so with another source (home audio, etc.)
iTunes can only keep track of the number of burns when you actually use it's product. So far it's been fail safe for me.

has anyone noticed that the random shuffle isn't so random?
Most times, my first ten tracks include 2-3 cuts off the same album.
Apple made a fix for this in the latest itunes, but it hasn't made a difference...

No sooner did converts load their libraries onto the shiny new devices than they discovered a new deficiency: The randomization feature seemed anything but, well, random. Sure, "I Got the Blues" no longer played back to back with "Bitch," but two songs later, the Rolling Stones were back, and three tunes after that they were back again.
....
when I ran my 2,700-song playlist through the program, it didn't take long to find the same lack of variety. Song No. 4 in the list was "Bleeding Heart Disease," a tune off the first album by the Southern punk rock band The Dexateens. Song No. 6 comes from the same CD.
My playlist has a total of 17 songs by the band, so it seemed highly unlikely that two of them would be bunched so close together in a random order. But I was wrong about that.
The problem, it turns out, isn't that the programs aren't randomizing my playlists. They are. According to Jeff Lait, a mathematician and author of randomm3u, it's what's happening between my ears, specifically, in my expectations of what it means for something to be random.
To illustrate his point, Lait referred to a phenomenon statisticians call the birthday paradox. Roughly stated, it holds that if there are 23 randomly selected people in a room, there is a better than 50-50 chance that at least two of them will have the same birthday. The point: Mathematical randomness often contradicts our intuitive expectations of randomness.
What we want, Lait says, isn't a list that's been randomized, but one that's been stratified, or separated into categories that are weighted by a listener's preferences. A stratified playlist might select songs randomly but would be smart enough to throw out choices that, say, would repeat a band within 10 songs.

This is true; I've seen it done as an experiment a few times. I have ZERO idea why this works mathematically though.

hmmm...i never really thought that the random mode for itunes wasnt really random. but now that i think about it, it seems as though the songs of the artists that i listen to most often repeat quite frequently, not that the first 10 are indicative of the artists i listen to all the time (well maybe the cardigans...they are my guilty pleasure, early stuff anyway).

That is pretty cool. I have often wondered about that. I just thought there was a glitch in the ipod system or that they would go back to an artist that was just played to give you some continuity.

Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
Marty DiBergi: I don't know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.
