Title: Best places to drink at in the DC area
Post by: Ardamus on October 21, 2009, 09:19:16 pm
For years, I feel like I go to the same places. If not that, the same areas at the very most. Since that thread about beer got me thinking, I wanted to know what would be the best spots to drink at.

Russia House. Eighteenth Street Lounge. Smith Point. Or basically anywhere in Georgetown that has a list.

'Anywhere in Georgetown that has a list'???
If you're gonna give a smarmy answer at least make it relevant to this century.
I wouldn't go to ESL just to drink, but it continues to have world class DJ's drop in and no 'list'.

My back deck is the best place. But obvously Birch and Barley/Churchkey  is #2, starting today. And of course Birreria Paradiso. I only drink beer and wine, so if you're talking about drinking the hard stuff, i guess i have the wrong thread.

the bar at cityzen.  you sort of get that "the bar from the shining" feeling while you sit . . . and they make the best mojitos in town.  plus you can watch the interesting people.

Are you under the impression that there are not establishments in Georgetown in this day and age that are list only?

I can say one spot that I've been to once and enjoyed was Bread Soda in Georgetown; definitely would like to go back. Its out of the way but I enjoyed it. I'm usually going to spots on U Street so I'm trying to find other places to hit up.

Georgetown wouldn't make it in the top 3 areas with the most velvet rope clubs in the District. (What's left of them.)
A select few would actually want to be on the list of a frat boy rent-a-room party.
Go ahead, name more than two spots that consistently has a list.

I heard Duffys was good. Where is it?

One place I don't hit up much but I really will do it sooner or later is Pilar. Real laid back.

It's like half a block from 930. If you're facing the 930 front door, to your left and half block past the club.

What do you guys find so special about Duffy's? I'll give you that it's close to the club. But the food menu is basic, the beer menu is basic, and the jukebox is uninteresting. Good stop off before a show, but I'd never choose to go there for the sake of going there.

that's how I see it too it's just a good place to go to before a show.  Not sure how it is any other night

Asylum was one of my faves for many years. Saturdays at 5 pm... they used to have quarter beers then (first Shiner then MGD but recently they switched to Natural Light and I just can't go for that no can do)...

I used to love going there... I'd take whatever records/cds I'd managed to score at CD Game Exchange and hang out there for a few quarter beers....maybe even a 75 cent beer.. but I just can't stand that natural light shit..

Agreed, the beer selection at Duffys is mediocre at best. Honestly I was a little taken back when our waitress replied to my inquiry about a pale ale on draft that no they did not carry any. However, I later realized that like any decent irish drinking establishment they did of course have Bass on tap.....the buffalo wings are the best in town though....since i'm out in the md burbs, the best I got is Dogfish Head in Gaithersburg but I prefer the Big Hunt when I get into DC...looking forward to checking out Churchkey in the near future

The wings at Duffys are OK but if I only want a beer before a show I'll head somewhere else.

I did have the Shepherd's Pie at Duffy's once.  Not bad.

Damn, looks like they're trying to compete with Brickseller in Dupont with a selection like that. I will definitely check this spot out.

True. One of my ex-girls wanted to get into a show at 930 that I wasn't pressed to get into so, I ended up wasting a rack of hours there drinking beer, watching sports, and playing darts. The location of it is what makes it what it is I think.

Yeah, I think at least once a year I turn up sitting there watching a Michigan football game because my friend around the corner doesn't have TV.

A couple decent selections from Bell's brewery and very solid cask-conditioned ales along with quite a few interesting choices.  I may have to make an attempt at heading here earlier than anticipated.

I'd been waiting for a tap list since I heard this place was opening, only recently.

Thanks for posting it.
