Title: A thread for guilty pleasures.
Post by: Ardamus on December 01, 2009, 12:33:01 am
Maybe this thread has been done in here before but, I want to know what guilty pleasures do you guys have as far as music you listen? You know....the kind of music you turn off before anyone catches you listening to it.

great idea for a thread, ardamus, unfortunately i don't see too many folks joining in.  for too many it's all about lookin' cool, and you're asking them to admit to their uncool.

but i'll play.  i'm quite comfortable with my uncoolness - i'm on record as liking radiohead and U2, i would love to see a jamiroquai show, and i listen to trance and chillout/downtempo/etc.

Oh come on...these are like the least guilty guilty-pleasures.  EVERYONE on here loves those.

I unabashedly love two Blink 182 records.  Eat that.

but i'll play.  i'm quite comfortable with my uncoolness - i'm on record as liking radiohead and U2, i would love to see a jamiroquai show, and i listen to trance and chillout/downtempo/etc.

I can't tell if I actually like Neil Diamond or neil Diamond impressions ie:Will Ferrell on SNL and David Spade in some terrible Movie with Artie Lange.
...
I have never seen Super Diamond

I still make stupid "Shit is Bananas" jokes and that song is so old now.

I hate the Snuggie but love to see people wear them.

I am a walking guilty pleasure.  It would be easier for me to tell you what I listen to that this lot would approve then it is for me to tell you what you could mock.

My last two purcahses were Adam Lambert and the Glee soundtrack, and my Snuggie is pink.

Same with all of these, only I've seen multiple Jamiroquai shows.

Unfortunately, those aren't REAL guilty pleasures, as in no one would really admit to liking it....I'm talking about something like this.

This is all sorts of 1000% awesome (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xW1fXL3s7bk)

The Jackson 5 from the 60s-70s (ABC, I Want You Back, etc..) aren't a guilty pleasure, but this is the Jacksons from the 80s....super high cheese factor with the Messianic Michael and the bad special effects and lazer sounds.

True but what trumps them all is owning a Jermaine Jackson record. Thats a guilty pleasure....not mine though.

Since I listen to alot of hip hop, here's two of mine: MC Paul Barman and Bizarre from D-12. Examples are below:

MC Paul Barman - "Cock Mobster"
Before you say anything...dude got lines like "I wanna fire Blanks, in Tyra Banks" and "I wanna smelly slice/of Kelly Price". Hilarious.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKRF46DOCtM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKRF46DOCtM)

Bizarre - "Bad Day"
This is a parody remake of Ice Cube's "Today Was A Good Day". I still fall out listening to this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjFRzCeFUUM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjFRzCeFUUM)
Its a re-make

it sorta is based on the fact, that out of most rap artists which i can't stand to listen to, except for oddly enough, the genius, old dirty bastard, i really have liked most of what i heard from him.  you know now that i think of it . . . i really loved das efx back in the day also.  neato.  i  need to go look if i have one of their albums still.

I like tart pop as singles, but there's not really alot of artists I can say I like all of their stuff by. Britney or Miley or HDuff has some great tracks, but some crap too.

Gaga and Avril are probably my overall favorites.

He's dead, isn't he?

I love very traditional Chinese music because it's so relaxing and sensual. The real stuff, not the modern American stuff based on classical structures made to sound like Chinese music. Not that stuff by that guy who did the music for the film 'Crouching Tiger... (whatever it's called)'. That is exactly what I don't want! Have tried to find some in music stores and haven't a clue of what to look for and never, ever see any. Don't even hear it any Chinese restaurants anymore. Anyone know of any on Amazon?

I think they are worth your time if you like highly manufactured electro-pop in the Britney/Toxic vein. Extremely catchy, heavily produced within an inch of the pop/rock borderlands, and usually about some kind of sex. The afore-mentioned album is one of the few among this genre (in which I include Sugababes, Annie, and even those neglected make-out artists in Tatu) that is one killer track after another.

ODB died back in 2004. You guys didn't know that? It was a big deal because he collapsed in the studio while recording. On top of that, people were getting into battles over his estate and etc.

There are times when I'm not quite so apt to admit to ... Randy Newman
He and Tom Waits (no guilt there) are the two big reasons I want to learn piano.

Sometimes I still want to hear Ice Ice baby, and Some MC Hammer (...saw him live when I was like 10, show was the shit..as far as a 10 year old is concerned)

That is some straight up guilt right there

muse and the silversun pickups, apparently  ::)

Don't worry. The onslaught of people looking for tickets will have you vindicated. Then again, I guess you could say the same about Hannah Montana. Seriously though, Muse and The Silversun Pickups have a major load of fans on this forum so anyone giving you crap about them probably has some Last.Fm spins they think they should hide. Even I would never consider one being 'guilty' of listening to either of them and I'm one of those indifferent to Muse and probably closer to being even less of a fan of SSPUs. All depends on the particular songs and my moods.

Now that Kajagoogoo (whatever that gooey shit is), or Jameriqui (again... whatever),  (I forget which one you posted) that you posted earlier, that is something to bring on the guilty plea. But any of the others, not at all. Even craptastic U2 whom I hate with full out and out passion, mostly because of Bonehead but also find their music to be super bland even without Bono's magnanimous ego. Just not off the 9:30 Club's run-of-the-mill charts.

Lester Kasai was my homeboy and mentor.  He was directly responsible for a lot of my broken bones as a child.

My favorite board looked like this, only white:

Had tracker trucks with a ton of inverted T's in pink and black grip tape on the top.  It was of course autographed by Lester.  I still have the board at my folks house and rode it this weekend.  Tried one curb grind and almost killed myself...

for some reason, in the world of skateboarding, the old school decks of my day (christian hosoi was always the "purist magnet") are coming back into scene.  perhaps it is because ramp skating is finally returning into form.  my first lance board was yellow, but then i moved onto bigger and better toys such as the works of trick art that was . . .
