Title: Beats By Dr Dre
Post by: Julian, Alleged Computer F**kface on January 14, 2010, 02:28:15 pm
Hey, I know we've talked about headphones/earbuds a million times on here, but I don't think we've ever discussed this brand.

http://beatsbydre.com

Are these worth the money? Specifically the earbuds, not as interested in the studio headphones.

Those earbuds are for poor people.

So... not as good as etymotics?

In ear headphones don't work for me.  But i've tried out the over-ear models and thought they were average and way way overpriced.  A boutique product for people that want their headphones to say "Dr. Dre".

Really?  A product marketed by Monster that is overpriced?

I, for one, am shocked.

I had no idea they were marketed by Monster.  It makes perfect sense now.  Monster Cables are one of the biggest scams out there.....

i like the cord on the Tour, my in-ears are always getting tangled so this flat cable would go a long way to solve that.  but apparently sound quality is so-so (lacking in bass, surprisingly) and aren't very comfy, based on the reviews i've been reading.

i was excited to discover that grado makes 2 models of in-ear headphones.  unfortunately the cheap ones ($80) are widely panned, and the expensive ones are $300 and supposedly not worth the price.  guess i'll stick to their cans.

etymotics are a solid choice. the ER4P is tops, but not sure it's worth the $70 mark-up over the HF5.  one of these two will probably be my next set.

other models you might want to look in to:
Head-Direct RE0 (bass is not boomy, i.e. not emphasized, a drawback for some people)
Klipsch Image S4
Shure E4c
Sennheiser IE series (the IE6, IE7 or IE8 models)
Victor-JVC HP-FX500 (they look luxurious, pic (http://alpha.akihabaranews.com/wp-content/uploads/images/6/86/16286//1.jpg), you'll appreciate the wood appointments.  the updated FX700 should be out in february, i just might hold out for these.  link (http://www.victor.co.jp/accessory/inner_sp/fx700/index.html) to japanese website with pix & specs of both... in japanese.  click on the "style" link)

So will Dr. Dre.

Or, at least, wish you were.

I fucking love my grados, if only not for the 6 foot garden hose chord.  Not very commute friendly at all.  But they do make some sweet sounding cans, and at around $70 for the sr60's they are far and away the best bang for buck out there.

Perhaps the newish igrado should be on my list...a more portable open ear phone from them.

i've read that they're decent to good, worthy of consideration/testing.

it's their in-ear offerings that have been panned, a cheap "me too" product.

grado cans are unbeatable, IMO.

Heh, just impulse ordered the igrados...My sennheiser px100 have been my commuting 'phones for years, but i lost an earpad a while back and just haven't gotten replacement pads yet.  I've been using some cheap mx500 earbuds for a while (which for the $$ are actually decent), so these should be a nice change of pace...

Everything i've read about the igrados says they're not quite up to snuff with the 60's, but maybe a slight upgrade from the senn px100/200's.  The biggest knock is comfort, but my noggin is fairly narrow, so hopefully not an issue.  And for $50 shipped, no biggie...

And yes sweetcell, their cans are great.  Most folks that give them a try are hearing the best headphones they've ever tried, by a mile.  And for the record, I dig the WWII radio operator fashion statement, too.

this is more so to tackle the who beatmaker/producer market. they're more than likely good quality but i would hold off on spending loot on those Dre headphones and find some other ones.

just came back from seeing "book of eli"... denzel washington has been roaming an apocalyptic wasteland for 30 years.  his main concerns are protecting his book, finding water, and charging his battery that powers an ipod - which is listens to through a pair of Beat Tours.  so if the movie is to be believed, the Tours are durable.

(in case anyone cares, the movie gets a mild thumbs up... entertaining, better than daybreakers as far a apocalyptic sci-fi goes)

i got a pair of Klipsch Image S4 about a month ago.  decided to go with them since they were the cheapest on my short list at ~$85 and i was in a (relatively) economical mood at the time.  i'm very, very happy with them.  incredibly clear sound.  they're a little bass-heavy but that's fine with me: usually i have bass boost turned on, but for the most part i find it too much.  the S4's provide just the right low-end lift that i'm looking for.   recommended.
