there is really no point in going 'cause i'm seeing bands that are playing sxsw this week, next week, and the week after...and I won't be tired.

Maybe that's why news on the forum during and after the event has reduced in recent years...and perhaps we are old and broke? ;) Well, although you are paying for tickets one by one - you won't have the hotel/air to pay. I like the festival though - all shows in one place - it's a pain just to get to one show around here.

good point - joe, how often do you bail on shows because it's such a hike from beyond germandtown to civilization? ;D

I saw the schedule....lots of shows I wanna see that are going on at the same time. Plus, I've seen the majority of the bands...

yay, positivity, thanks, snailhook. Very happy for you that you get to go - you'll have a great time. In addition, lots of good food and everyone is just damn happy to be there. Just try and get some sleep...enjoy and let us know how it is and what you see and hear.

there are a ton of day parties, and sponsored events/showcases outside the regular sxsw festival schedule to get around any conflicts.  and people (bands/musicians) show up at the last minute. anyway, it's a festival, you like those. i understand though, i can't do sxsw every year.

in case you were looking for some bed-time reading on how indie rock ain't so indie anymore... via P4K:

"For bands it should be about making conscious decisions. The first one is obvious-- should you come to SXSW? The trip back can be a lonely one. Your assigned showcase was east of the highway, or west of Congress, and no one came. Every morning I walked from my hotel to the grocery store for breakfast, and along the way I passed a dozen clubs that had bands playing to no one at 11am. It's this overkill of content that SXSW is able to thrive on. Every year the festival expands because every band that's ever been written up on a blog feels like there is a signed record contract waiting for them on the off ramp of the I-35. Bands making bad decisions is part of why big companies are able to prey on the festival as a whole."
-- Fucked Up, from a long and fascinating blog post (http://lookingforgold.blogspot.com/2010/03/sxsw-why.html) about the economics of events like SXSW. Fucked Up played several shows at this year's SXSW, including an official showcase they organized themselves.
