Anybody else excited for this show at Black Cat Sunday? Any field reports of their shows? All secondhand reports I've heard is that they're a nice assault on the ears.
-
I am really excited, and I hope I can go. I have heard great things about their live show.
-
I too am looking forward to the show.
The tour just started, but below are a couple of blogs' reviews.

Good timing, I just started listening to Pikul to see if I might want to go to the show. Still bummed I'm missing IV Thieves, but this could be a nice substitute.
-
I'm there. Been looking forward to it for a while.
-
pretty sure i'll make it out tonight to check them out...i was gonna book them at the red and the black, but they ended up taking the cat's offer.
-
I'd like to go but I have to pick up a friend at BWI at 12am. Any guesses as to when Silversun Pickups will come on?
-
two bands, backstage, sunday night?
page france: 9:30
silversun pickups: 10:30
if you leave at 11:15, you'll get to BWI by midnight.
-
Good show.
The sound could have been better.
The drummer's a little monster.
-
For a relatively new band, I was pretty impressed. Vocals could've been louder, but overall the sound wasn't tooo bad. And yes, the drummer was insane. At times he was going at it so fast that it looked like he was playing with six drumsticks. Expecting good things from them in the future.
-
The backstage was not made for shows like that, but they played a great set. I thought they were brilliant.
-
Is it safe to say that you are all bloggers?
HEHE
-
it was good times for a sunday evening, but to call them brilliant is ridiculous. reminded me of one of those bands from the mid-90s that got snatched up by a major label and then kicked to the curb after their first single didn't lead to a platinum record. granted, there were lots of pretty good bands like that. the vocals got annoying on occasion, but other than that, it was a pretty good sound they were working with. a few real standout tracks. the drummer was indeed a little monster.
i was pleasantly surprised by page france, too, sort of like a poor man's beulah. a bit too precious at times, but certainly knew their way around a catchy melody. if i didn't know the jesus thing coming in, i wouldn't have been able to tell.
-
what BookerT said, all of it. really good band, though the vocals leave me a bit cold. missed page france. thought i saw you rocking out, ggw.
-
The show was better than I expected. The sound was intense, but vocals could have been cleaned up a bit. Kind of cool to see a decent band in a small space like the back there. Good way to start the week all in all. I hope this band does continue on. I think they can actually get a following if given the chance.

That whole Silverlake music scene is going to hold the key to the damn world, I tell you. Just wait.
-
Nah, San Francisco has much better local bands than Los Angeles :)

totally agree with joe m. LA is pretty weak on the whole and generally overrated. SF has less people, higher quality.
-
Speaking of San Francisco, I'm going there in a week. Anything must-do?
I'm stopping at Amoeba for sure and then doing the typical tourist thing with my family, but am welcoming any and all suggestions.

This would be a 'must-do' for me...but then again, I've got a number of friends involved with this. Would still go anyway since it's a good line-up.

Not sure about the age thing though. (I'm under the impression you are under 21, right?) If you are interested, I can easily find out for you.

I was rocking out right until the moment I got back to my car and found a parking ticket, thus ending my 5-6 year streak of parking in the same illegal spot without ever getting a ticket. Oh well, it works out to ~$0.50/show by my calculations.
-
Sure beats pay for parking lots and meters!
Wait a minute...I thought those meters were free after 6PM, or something like that. At least, in DC. Bethesda is a whole other story. Those bastards are nasty and will meter you up to 10:00PM, and you better move your car every two hours!

just curious, what spot is this? is it that pseudo-spot right in front of the club that's on the crosswalk? that's always the "mirage" spot on a busy night, and i never know if it's actually legal or not. i got the spot directly in front of the club last nite, perhaps that's why i was in a good mood. a good parking space can really make a difference in one's attitude going into a show.
-
I'm sorry I missed the show, I'm liking the EP I have. The vocals get a little screamy in places but otherwise I think that's one of the group's stronger features. I wonder if it just wasn't working with the sound.

Definitely check out the Fillmore, Great American Music Hall, or Bimbo's. Those are my three fave music venues there.
You may also want to visit Aquarius Records if you are into vinyl/rare stuff.
Of course the Haight has good second hand clothing stores.
There's a really good Mexican restaurant that is open 24 hours. I believe it's on 14th and Mission. Another good restaurant is the one on 6th and Market (Tu Lan). Cheap...and it was Julia Child's fave restaurant in SF.
If you dig the bar scene and like cute Austrian boys who don't speak English, I recommend the Comet Club in the Marina district. HEH. (Are you over 21?)
:)

Yup, under twenty one. If you could find out for me, that would be excellent.

Under 21. Under 18 for that matter.
Nothing interesting is playing the Fillmore while I'm there, but of course Wolf Parade plays immediately after I leave. Same with GAMH. And there is only one show booked at Bimbo's the whole time I'm there. Rahhh. I checked Pollstar and unfortunately the show front isn't looking amazing. I think Death Cab is playing in Berkeley but I've seen them before, and don't really have the desire.
Don't tell me about vinyl shopping! I have a problem haha, in that I compulsively buy vinyl that I want, yet no longer have a functioning record player, and haven't for a long time.
Thanks for the restaraunt recommendations, I defintely want to try out Tu Lan.

Rasputin Records is cool. For good Chinese food, check out House of Nanking.
-
looks like devotchka is at the independent on august 17 ... cool venue?
-
The Independent is a cool venue with good sound. I saw Ben Lee and a real gem called Har Mar Superstar there last year or the year before. (Har Mar was a sweaty fat guy who took off clothes as the show went on and would come into the audience and kiss the girls). Anyway, the venue is close to the same size as the main stage at Black Cat. And there was some seating around the perimeter. Good beer selection too. It would probably be a good fit for Devotchka.

Yes, agreed it's a good venue. It's just hard to find parking in that area...
-
I love Har Mar! Let's form an appreciation club.

Hey Graace, I got the above info from a friend in one of the bands.
In the meantime, I just received an email from another friend in one of the other bands. He said that if you aren't of age, if you show up at about 7:30 and help them unload, maybe they can sneak you in as one of the band. ;) Not sure how serious he is but if you are interested, get in touch with me and I'll set you up. I'm sure that he will do what he can to help you. BTW, it's not Smackie so you won't have to worry about him or the others at all. :p
