Title: tool @ red rocks
Post by: thatguy on July 01, 2010, 10:31:27 am
just got back from denver.  saw two nights of tool at red rocks, 5th row dead center.  the perfect way to clear my head and cleanse my musical palette after a very busy stretch of work.  i have been to the majority of the amphitheaters in this country, but there's nothing like that place.  i will be going back.

Has Tool changed their setlist up this time around? From what I've heard they've been touring the same setlist for a couple of years now.

Pretty much the same set list as the past few years with a few songs being changed out between the 2 nights. Though they opened with third Eye both nights, which was pretty damn cool and you gotta love hearing Flood live, with nothing but visuals of water being shown in the background

You sure as hell needed that cleansing after Sunday.
All of us who were there required something to clear our souls of the giant shit Courtney Love took on them.

unfortunately, we didn't know woven hand was on the bill.  our schedule was pretty tight on monday, and we were still in line outside while they played.

we did get to see their drummer come out and do a dual drum solo with danny carey, which was pretty damn cool.

we went early tuesday night to catch their set and report back, but they didn't play.  the regular tour opener dalek was back on the bill.

i was at phish on saturday, and i was courtney love's personal escort at the club on sunday.

the airport security is usually surprised that i don't set off the metal detectors.  after years of working with the gates, i know what i need to take off to get though them easily.  my CPAP did set off some sort of alarm on the scan, which lead to a full pat down search.  not nearly as intimate as when i was "selectively screened" a few years back.  had to drop my pants for that one.

i hope i don't regret asking this, but what is a CPAP?  interwebz seem to think it's a breathing machine for folks with sleep apnea... i'm sure you know better than to go through security holding a ventilator :)

searching for "CPAP + piercings" leads to info about using piercings to pin one's tongue out of the way at night.  THAT's gotta be comfortable.

I was standing outside the club when you came out to escort Ms. Courtney Love iphone filmer in. She was the same girl who also came early to do her hair, no?

Do they ever play Pushit anymore? I saw Tool once in 01 (it was originally scheduled for 9/11/01) and once in 02 where they opened with Third Eye.

a CPAP is a machine that allows me to breathe when i sleep.  i didn't go through the gate with it, i put it through the scanner like you're supposed to.  they pull it out and run some sort of test on it, probably checking to make sure it isn't a bomb.  it failed the test the first time, apparently.  they re-calibrated the machine, and i went on my way.

They played Pushit occasionally on the '07 tour.

I was at the Monday night Red Rocks show.  Probably the 12th time seeing Tool since '93 and near the top.  As Thatguy said, the venue is just unbeatable, and Tool finally revamped their show as compared to what they were doing from 06 through 09.

They had a very different visual show this time and the setlist had some decent variation in it with the addition of Third Eye, The Patient and Intolerence.

Also, to answer the earlier question about how Wovenhand was, I did catch their opening set and thought it was great.  It is much heavier than on record, and he played almost all electric guitar.  There were only one or two songs where he used a mandolin-like instrument.  I thought they were a great fit as an opening act for Tool and they got a great reception from most people that I could see.
