Yes, it?s that time again, where you can get some of your money back from the Proprietor of the 9:30 Club.

Hello 930 Board Member,

You have been invited to join vansmack's Private Group in Yahoo! Sports Survival Football.

In order to join the group, just go to Survival Football (http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/survival), and click the "Join a Group" button. From there, enter the following information...

Group ID#: 18966
Password: ninethirty

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The object of 930 Survival Football is to be the last Active member of the 930 Board.

In order to accomplish this goal, you must correctly pick the winner of one professional football game each week.

But, to make this somewhat simple task more difficult, each user can only pick each professional football team once during the season.

If a correct selection is made, the user will remain Active for the following week. If an incorrect selection is made, that user will be Eliminated.

Our Group is limited to the first 50 people who sign up. There are two prize categories:

$5 - every participant must play the $5 version of the Survival Football pool, winner take all.

$100 - in addition to the $5 pool, an optional ?High Stakes? $100 per person pool is a side pool for those that wish to participate. The decision must be made prior to week one.  To signify your willingness to participate, simply put an asterisk next to your submission name (eg, vansmack*) on the yahoo site.

Best of luck, and in case you need to be reminded about previous results?

How do you want to do this?
Just let it roll in the main group pool or should the commish set up a separate one?

I'm assuming the stakes are same as last year - $1,000.

And where is the good Doctor - Anton Phibes?

So I'm sitting at the bar on Saturday night and I'm talking to vinniethefish.  So I say to vinnie, "You're going to follow my theory right? We've been talking about this for years."

"Nah," he says. "I don't want to tie with you - I want to beat you!"

"Let me assure you of one thing," I reply. "Nobody wins this pool in the first week, but you can sure lose it.  Don't do anything stupid."

He picked the Niners, on the road, with Alex Smith at the helm.  Good lord.

at the beginning of the chicago game, cutler threw a pass that was incomplete, and the announcer said, "a poor pass by jay cutler."  i told my wife, "heh, that's not the only time we're gonna hear that this season."  course, he hasn't yet had a so poorly thrown pass called for intentional grounding like kyle orton did a couple of years ago.

I don't know why everybody hates on Cutler.  I'm sure you love him now?  I love, love, LOVE the guy.  My favorite football player in....forever.  I love him like Neko Case in a half slip.  My Super Bowl pick before the season was Bears over Colts.

I seriously considered joining the high rollers pool and now I'm glad I didn't.  Because if I had won with Atlanta the first week, I would have picked....Tennessee this week.  Not that I think the Steelers are the worst team in the league....but.....come on.  They're down to their FOURTH QB.  They're THIS close to signing Neil O'Donnell or Bubby Brister.

i got cutler really late in my fantasy draft. everyone laughed at me. the next best qb left was flacco

i'm as surprised as the next guy that the steelers won both games, but cmon a road team and vince young vs a real defense in weeks one and two? at least 3 better games both weeks. i think we've learned that polamalu is more important than big dumb ben though

This logic, while fortunate for you this week, makes absolutely no sense.

I would much rather be forced to make a risky pick in the later weeks against fewer people than take a gamble in the early weeks.

yes, because you saw one incident it's like this everywhere.

reminder: people argue about chevy vs ford, salt & vinegar vs barbecue, led zep vs. black sabbath, curling vs. synchronized swimming, blah blah blah.  any one of these can bring about heated words.

I almost went with New Orleans this week.

Allow Smackie to share some of his rules for Survival Football on this one:

Rule #12 - Never pick the road team from the previous week's Monday Night game, unless:

(a) they traveled less than 200 miles for that road game, or
(b) they are at home AND they are the only double digit favorite you have left

It's essentially two days less rest and that makes a huge difference.

Obviously, some people are not paying attention to Smackie's little insider tips:

A road team?  In week 3?

Eliminated in Week 4

eros* (Indianapolis)
Shadrach (Indianapolis)

Picks

7 - New Orleans
2 - Atlanta
2 - San Diego

Despite New Orleans having the bigger spread, San Diego was the smart pick this week.  When they announced that Pierre Thomas was out, I nearly changed my pick, but the Vegas line didn't move at all, so I stuck with them.  The San Diego line however, moved 2 points in favor of the Chargers throughout the week...

And in other gambling news, $20 on Greg Biffle paid 10-1 for Smackie this weekend (and others in Vegas who heeded Smax advice).  It's too bad it wasn't a Saturday night race, because if you find yourself with a few extra hundered in your pocket in Vegas on a Saturday night, well, that's how stories are created.

i listened to the entire redskins/eagles game on sirius in my car ride home from the beach.  it rained most of the way so the seven hours would have been normally boring.  it was my first time listening to football on the radio.  it was nice.  i liked it.  and (grumpy old man/hardcore football freak) sonny's commentary was perfect.  the end.

listening to the radio is actually how i got into paying attention to football.  i got bored of a lot of things in a period of time where i was in the car a lot.  listening to football on saturdays and sundays made the time pass a lot faster as it occupied my mind a bit.

that playoff game in green bay in the snow from like 3 years ago was a pretty cool listen.

I hate to sound like a broken record here, but the last 7 people who have been eliminated have a chosen a road team...

Eliminated in Week 5

D.C. Snipers (New Orleans)
the CFL! (San Diego)
jrho (San Diego)
crevers (San Diego)

Picks

4 - Indianapolis
3 - San Diego
2 - Baltimore
1 - Atlanta
1 - New Orleans

I also hit my three team parlay this week (Titans, Bears, Eagles).  Couple of good gambling weeks to compensate for my Fantasy team that will almost assuredly go 0-13.

This was an interesting one for me.  Tampa coming off the bye week made me hesitate and I rolled the dice with KC coming off their bye week (and Indy in a must win siutation).  Cincy was my #2 choice though....

Hurwitz took Baltimore

and like tens of thousands of other survivor pool players, he let out a huge sigh of relief when the bills gave the game away in OT.  had buffalo kept it together, it would have been one of the biggest survivor bloodbaths ever... over half the field picked BAL.

If I had to put together a tips sheet for winning, rule #1 would be make a gut pick on Monday or Tuesday. You have all week to change it, and even if you forget to change it, rolling the dice with your gut pick is better than having no pick at all. I have already made a pick for week 8, though it's highly unlikely I stick with it...

Eliminated in Week 7

Got Haggis? (No pick)

Picks

4 - Baltimore
2 - Seattle

So who's left?

In the $100/$5 pool:

Seth
Sweetcell
Venerable
Smackie

And in just the $5 pool:

Gail the Snail (who's board name is not evidently clear to me)

If you don't want to pick a Thursday team, you still have until 10:00AM PST on Sunday to make your pick.

And no, I didn't forget to pick.

NEVERMIND:  I think Seth wants to know why we didn't all pick the Bears.  And that's a pretty damn good question.  It's in direct violation of my "Never pick a road team with an available home team double digit favorite still available..."

So I was all set to go with the Jets on Thursday, until I played a High Stakes FIFA11 tournament with my nephew.  Had I won, I would have been able to take some liberties with his fantasy football lineup this week. If he won, he got to make my survival pool pick.

So that's how I ended up with the Jake Delhomme led Browns.

The lesson, as always, play more video games...

I'm surprised it took you this long.  Let those with long-term strategies eliminate themselves early and roll the dice on the long shots when it's just you and a couple people left.  Your odds are greatly improved.  Sure, it will take some luck in the end, but if I have to gamble, I'd rather gamble in week 14 or 15 then week 6.
