Hello 930 Board Member,
You have been invited to join vansmack's Private Group in Yahoo! Sports Survival Football.
In order to join the group, just go to Survival Football (http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/survival), and click the "Join a Group" button. From there, enter the following information...
Group ID#: 18966
Password: ninethirty
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The object of 930 Survival Football is to be the last Active member of the 930 Board.
In order to accomplish this goal, you must correctly pick the winner of one professional football game each week.
But, to make this somewhat simple task more difficult, each user can only pick each professional football team once during the season.
If a correct selection is made, the user will remain Active for the following week. If an incorrect selection is made, that user will be Eliminated.
Our Group is limited to the first 50 people who sign up. There are two prize categories:
$5 - every participant must play the $5 version of the Survival Football pool, winner take all.
$100 - in addition to the $5 pool, an optional ?High Stakes? $100 per person pool is a side pool for those that wish to participate. The decision must be made prior to week one. To signify your willingness to participate, simply put an asterisk next to your submission name (eg, vansmack*) on the yahoo site.
Best of luck, and in case you need to be reminded about previous results?

And where is the good Doctor - Anton Phibes?

You know if Seth loses, ticket prices will just go up.

perhaps you should think of the future . . . where the entire season might become nothing more than "fantasy."

or if by "bold" you mean "expensive."

So I'm sitting at the bar on Saturday night and I'm talking to vinniethefish. So I say to vinnie, "You're going to follow my theory right? We've been talking about this for years."
"Nah," he says. "I don't want to tie with you - I want to beat you!"
"Let me assure you of one thing," I reply. "Nobody wins this pool in the first week, but you can sure lose it. Don't do anything stupid."
He picked the Niners, on the road, with Alex Smith at the helm. Good lord.
-
Unbelievable.....
Eliminated in Week 1
Child Please* San Diego
Pacific Trim Atlanta
vinniethefish* San Francisco
Rocking Out in the Back Corner San Diego
And in the $1000 pool...
PhibesPhootball* San Diego
ggw* Indianapolis
I'm just in awe that Seth won $2k in the first week.
Picks
9 - Tennessee
3 - Chicago
3 - Miami
3 - San Diego
2 - NY Giants
1 - Atlanta
1 - Indianapolis
1 - New Orleans
1 - San Francisco

well I have to say that this week had me completely baffled, and I got very very lucky...in fact, I was one controversial call away from being out as well
there was no easy pick like usually
-
well I have to say that this week had me completely baffled, and I got very very lucky...in fact, I was one controversial call away from being out as well
at the beginning of the chicago game, cutler threw a pass that was incomplete, and the announcer said, "a poor pass by jay cutler." i told my wife, "heh, that's not the only time we're gonna hear that this season." course, he hasn't yet had a so poorly thrown pass called for intentional grounding like kyle orton did a couple of years ago.

Seth and Dr. Anton - Check your PMs for info on the double or nothing pool.

Commish LOVES this. Let me know if I need to set something else up...

In the "We're Really Hoping to Nullify Our Debt to Seth Hurwitz" Pool:
Phibes - New Orleans
GGW - Green Bay
Seth - Green Bay

I don't know why everybody hates on Cutler. I'm sure you love him now? I love, love, LOVE the guy. My favorite football player in....forever. I love him like Neko Case in a half slip. My Super Bowl pick before the season was Bears over Colts.
I seriously considered joining the high rollers pool and now I'm glad I didn't. Because if I had won with Atlanta the first week, I would have picked....Tennessee this week. Not that I think the Steelers are the worst team in the league....but.....come on. They're down to their FOURTH QB. They're THIS close to signing Neil O'Donnell or Bubby Brister.

I'm glad to see I'm the only one who survived by not picking the Packers. I'll save them for later. :)

i got cutler really late in my fantasy draft. everyone laughed at me. the next best qb left was flacco
i'm as surprised as the next guy that the steelers won both games, but cmon a road team and vince young vs a real defense in weeks one and two? at least 3 better games both weeks. i think we've learned that polamalu is more important than big dumb ben though

Eliminated in Week 2
misspretentious No Pick
yinzer No Pick
splashes von yu* (Dallas)
Downskins 2 (Minnesota)
Picks
13 - Green Bay
1 - Dallas
1 - Minnesota
1 - Oakland (!)
2 people failed to make picks.
-
I'm glad to see I'm the only one who survived by not picking the Packers. I'll save them for later. :)
This logic, while fortunate for you this week, makes absolutely no sense.
I would much rather be forced to make a risky pick in the later weeks against fewer people than take a gamble in the early weeks.
-
Agreed. But I was pretty confident in the Raiders beating the Rams. Oakland is a much better team than they let on.
-
so i was sitting in a restraurant . . . and i overheard these two guys talking about their fantasy teams. then they were arguing about each other picks. then they were actually getting loud about it. then one guy gets up, tells the other to fuck himself and walks out.
it really has come to this, hasn't it?

yes, because you saw one incident it's like this everywhere.
reminder: people argue about chevy vs ford, salt & vinegar vs barbecue, led zep vs. black sabbath, curling vs. synchronized swimming, blah blah blah. any one of these can bring about heated words.
-
Imagine my excitement yesterday as I saw the Bills actually keeping it competitive with the Pats while realizing that everyone in the $100 pool picked them except for me.
That was my closest shot. I'm done.
-
I almost went with New Orleans this week. Really glad I opted for Baltimore instead.
-
Normally, I wait until Tuesday to update this, but since nobody touched tonights Packers/Bears matchup.....
Eliminated in Week 3
takemyfive (Washington)
Picks
10 - New England
3 - Baltimore
1 - Washington
A road team? In week 3?
-
Imagine my excitement yesterday as I saw the Bills actually keeping it competitive with the Pats while realizing that everyone in the $100 pool picked them except for me.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Cleveland leading Baltimore heading into the 4th quarter?
-
I almost went with New Orleans this week.
Allow Smackie to share some of his rules for Survival Football on this one:
Rule #12 - Never pick the road team from the previous week's Monday Night game, unless:
(a) they traveled less than 200 miles for that road game, or
(b) they are at home AND they are the only double digit favorite you have left
It's essentially two days less rest and that makes a huge difference.
-
Seth and Phibes took the Pats; I took the Ravens.
-
Seth - Atlanta
Phibes - Green Bay
GGW - New Orleans
Go Niners!!
-
Fucking Falcons.. .
-
Fucking Falcons.. .
Fucking Falcons? Fucking Colts! A 59 yd FG? Are you kidding me?
Add to it the fact that the Saints and the Falcons both trailed in the 4th quarter. I figured I was on easy street. Instead I'm the only one to lose.
Grumble grumble.
-
Fucking Falcons.. .
what...I like them
-
Obviously, some people are not paying attention to Smackie's little insider tips:
A road team? In week 3?
Eliminated in Week 4
eros* (Indianapolis)
Shadrach (Indianapolis)
Picks
7 - New Orleans
2 - Atlanta
2 - San Diego
Despite New Orleans having the bigger spread, San Diego was the smart pick this week. When they announced that Pierre Thomas was out, I nearly changed my pick, but the Vegas line didn't move at all, so I stuck with them. The San Diego line however, moved 2 points in favor of the Chargers throughout the week...
And in other gambling news, $20 on Greg Biffle paid 10-1 for Smackie this weekend (and others in Vegas who heeded Smax advice). It's too bad it wasn't a Saturday night race, because if you find yourself with a few extra hundered in your pocket in Vegas on a Saturday night, well, that's how stories are created.
-
i listened to the entire redskins/eagles game on sirius in my car ride home from the beach. it rained most of the way so the seven hours would have been normally boring. it was my first time listening to football on the radio. it was nice. i liked it. and (grumpy old man/hardcore football freak) sonny's commentary was perfect. the end.
-
i hate this week.......

listening to the radio is actually how i got into paying attention to football. i got bored of a lot of things in a period of time where i was in the car a lot. listening to football on saturdays and sundays made the time pass a lot faster as it occupied my mind a bit.
that playoff game in green bay in the snow from like 3 years ago was a pretty cool listen.
-
I hate to sound like a broken record here, but the last 7 people who have been eliminated have a chosen a road team...
Eliminated in Week 5
D.C. Snipers (New Orleans)
the CFL! (San Diego)
jrho (San Diego)
crevers (San Diego)
Picks
4 - Indianapolis
3 - San Diego
2 - Baltimore
1 - Atlanta
1 - New Orleans
I also hit my three team parlay this week (Titans, Bears, Eagles). Couple of good gambling weeks to compensate for my Fantasy team that will almost assuredly go 0-13.
-
i have a raiders fan friend who has a strict "never touch a raiders game" rule in survival, and its not because theyre his team either. road teams in division are particularly bad picks...
-
Seth picked Indy;
Phibes picked Baltimore;
GGW was eliminated by the Bungles.
-
GGW was eliminated by the Bungles.
This was an interesting one for me. Tampa coming off the bye week made me hesitate and I rolled the dice with KC coming off their bye week (and Indy in a must win siutation). Cincy was my #2 choice though....
-
Nobody picked a road team this week...
Eliminated in Week 6
Nobody
Picks
5 - Pittsburgh
2 - New York Giants
-
Phibes and Hurwitz both took the Steelers last week.
-
that was as close to a free play as you'll ever get
-
that was as close to a free play as you'll ever get
With a little bit of planning in previous weeks, I think this week could be the same.
Phibes picked Baltimore;
Oh, wait. Nevermind.....
-
as a guy that didnt play well, i know who i'm rooting for outside of my pick...
-
Phibes took KC
Hurwitz took Baltimore
-
Hurwitz took Baltimore
and like tens of thousands of other survivor pool players, he let out a huge sigh of relief when the bills gave the game away in OT. had buffalo kept it together, it would have been one of the biggest survivor bloodbaths ever... over half the field picked BAL.
-
i totally forgot to make a pick this week, ugh
-
If I had to put together a tips sheet for winning, rule #1 would be make a gut pick on Monday or Tuesday. You have all week to change it, and even if you forget to change it, rolling the dice with your gut pick is better than having no pick at all. I have already made a pick for week 8, though it's highly unlikely I stick with it...
Eliminated in Week 7
Got Haggis? (No pick)
Picks
4 - Baltimore
2 - Seattle
So who's left?
In the $100/$5 pool:
Seth
Sweetcell
Venerable
Smackie
And in just the $5 pool:
Gail the Snail (who's board name is not evidently clear to me)
Godsshoeshine
-
i cant even tell you how upset i was after the no call on the forward progress
-
I take responsibility for Gail The Snail.
-
Hurwitz - KC
Phibes - St. Louis
-
I only see Gail The Snail (me) picking St. Louis. Everyone else KC.
-
Never worried.
-
You lie.
-
Dang.
-
we would have been out on a tie, right?
-
we would have been out on a tie, right?
Yes.
-
that would have been a gambling legend
up there with the year that i was so far ahead in an ncaa pool that the final four didnt even matter
-
I only see Gail The Snail (me) picking St. Louis. Everyone else KC.
This was the kiss of death and why I wasn't that worried. The gambling gods chortled at this post, as did I....
-
As much as I would have loved to see Seth lose the double or nothing to the Good Dr...
Eliminated in Week 8
By the hair on our chins....nobody!
Picks
5 - Kansas City
1 - St. Louis (jeffml)
So who's left?
In the $100/$5 pool:
Seth
Sweetcell
Venerable
Smackie
And in just the $5 pool:
jeffml
Godsshoeshine
-
"As much as I would have loved to see Seth lose the double or nothing to the Good Dr..."
now that wasn't very nice

Agreed. Next time, if there is a next time, I'll keep my fingers off the keyboard.
I only see Gail The Snail (me) picking St. Louis. Everyone else KC.
This was the kiss of death and why I wasn't that worried. The gambling gods chortled at this post, as did I....
-
Like some kind of Terminator that just can't be killed,Hurwitz has survived 2 very brutal weeks of mental punishment courtesy of the Buffalo Bills, and STILL keeps driving forward......I may have no way to stop him to be honest....
-
Buffalo is actually not a bad team
-
Buffalo is actually not a bad team
For gambling purposes....
-
3rd straight week of venerable's pick heading to OT. His year?
-
Eliminated in Week 9
Nobody. Other than venerable, a pretty easy week for most. I think things will get interesting from here on out. I would argue that Smackie and Seth are not in as comfortable postitions in the next two weeks as Sweetcell and Venerable...
Picks
3 - Atlanta
2 - NY Giants
1 - Minnesota (Venerable)
So who's left?
In the $100/$5 pool:

Smackie

3rd straight week of venerable's pick heading to OT. His year?
i had stopped watching the game.....
-
Phibes and Hurwitz both picked the G-Men.
-
Remember, this week starts the Thursday game of the week. Nobody actually has Baltimore or Atlanta left, so it doesn't impact us this week.
If you don't want to pick a Thursday team, you still have until 10:00AM PST on Sunday to make your pick.
-
did someone forget to tell the cowboys that they suck?
-
Phibes and Hurwitz both took Tampa.
-
I think things will get interesting from here on out. I would argue that Smackie and Seth are not in as comfortable positions in the next two weeks as Sweetcell and Venerable...
Oops. I would have taken the NY Football Giants this week too had I not used them earlier...

It's amazing what can happen when you fire the offensive coordinator.
-
9 out of 10 times i still make that pick. . .i can now look back and see the missed warning signs though. i just didn't want to believe that tampa bay is the best team in the nfc.
-
i just didn't want to believe that tampa bay is the best team in the nfc.
They're not. Atlanta is, with Philly now second.
Looks like I missed another lovely evening in DC tonight....
-
T'wasn't lovely. Rained all second half.
My first NFL game. Hi mom!
-
did y'all forget to pick
-
we cant see everyone's picks until sunday, unless (i assume) someone chose the thursday game
-
unless (i assume) someone chose the thursday game
Seth is the only participant who's already picked the Bears in previous weeks, so I'm not sure what he's getting at here...
And no, I didn't forget to pick.
NEVERMIND: I think Seth wants to know why we didn't all pick the Bears. And that's a pretty damn good question. It's in direct violation of my "Never pick a road team with an available home team double digit favorite still available..."
-
especially a road team on a Thursday night
-
it said I was the winner, presumably because the deadline was thur
-
Though I never venture into either of the sports thrreads, I just wanted to deliver a little something for you guys.

-
what, has vick moved onto chickens now? maybe because people don't care if you torture chickens. they taste good.
-
^ Walkie, they're roosters. You know, cocks; something you, of all people, should know. ;)
-
Seth took Dallas.
Phibes picked Atlanta.
-
it said I was the winner, presumably because the deadline was thur
I see. It must have been in error because the deadline is kickoff of the first game on
Sunday.
-
yeah, i made my pick on monday last week
-
Smackie still has to stomach a night of Norv Turner to advance, but since I'm fixing to be on the slopes tomorrow and through the rest of the week, I thought I should update this week now.
Eliminated in Week 11
Nobody yet. Smackie still needs the Chargers to win.
Picks
For the first time, the entire pool picked a different team:
1 - Dallas (Seth)
1 - NY Jets (Godsshoeshine)
1 - Kansas City (jeffml)
1 - San Diego (Smackie)
So who's left?
In the $100/$5 pool:
Seth
Smackie (maybe)
And in just the $5 pool:
jeffml
Godsshoeshine
There are a lot of mid-week games this week, so pick often, pick early.

-
so...if you don't pick before a thursday game, are you out?
-
No. The deadline for picking is 12:59pm on Sunday.
-
Seth and Phibes both took the mighty Browns.
-
So I was all set to go with the Jets on Thursday, until I played a High Stakes FIFA11 tournament with my nephew. Had I won, I would have been able to take some liberties with his fantasy football lineup this week. If he won, he got to make my survival pool pick.
So that's how I ended up with the Jake Delhomme led Browns.
The lesson, as always, play more video games...
-
as men of this country grow older, what happens next . . . fantasy rest homes?
-
i switched between the browns and houston about 10 times over the holiday
-
For those that are wondering, we went in to Week 15 last year....
Eliminated in Week 12
Nobody. Thank you John Kasay for pulling a Brotzman.
Picks
2 - Cleveland (Seth and Smackie)

There is one mid-week games this week, so if you fancy the Eagles or Godshoeshine's favorite Houston Texans, pick early.

Looks like Seth picked Seattle and everyone else Philly.

Smackie, coming at you from Vegas, post half-marathon, post 3 team parlay. Good trip all around.
Eliminated in Week 13
Nobody. Clever move by Seth here...

Seth
Smackie
And in just the $5 pool:

I am starting to think that Hurwitz sharked us. He really screwed the pooch the first couple of years only to come back and take $6k+ in the last couple of years.
I'm totally pulling for vansmack in the $100 pool.
-
what I learned the 1st few years was to stop trying to save the big guns for later
always go for the most obvious now
very very easy to talk about yesterday today, but div rivals are very seldom a lock
-
what I learned the 1st few years was to stop trying to save the big guns for later

I'm surprised it took you this long. Let those with long-term strategies eliminate themselves early and roll the dice on the long shots when it's just you and a couple people left. Your odds are greatly improved. Sure, it will take some luck in the end, but if I have to gamble, I'd rather gamble in week 14 or 15 then week 6.
-
That garbage organization in San Diego will never win anything. What a group of bozos....
Had Philly and Seattle and went with a crapbag, Norv Turner coached team......I think I must have had a death wish....

I haven't done the research, but I'd be willing to bet San Diego (or Norv Turner) is responsible for the most eliminations.

When Santonio Holmes dropped that bunny TD in the first half, I started drafting my concession speech....
