Title: The 2011 Albums Thread
Post by: Jaguar on November 07, 2010, 04:18:49 am
To date, the two Spc-Eco EPs, Silver Clouds and Out Of The Sky, were released via internet download only. We fans have finally convinced Dean Garcia to release them on some sort of tangible format. From what I could surmise, after a talk with a label he's going to work with, it looks like he's going to take my suggestion and release them together as 1 full CD but that remains to be seen. Could be any possible combination but expect to see them sometime in early 2011.

Deep Cut have a new album coming out soon. It's mastered but still needs all the pressing and after recording work done. Expect maybe early 2011 or so.

Deep Cut is Mat Flint's band who was once the main force behind Revolver.

HAHAHA!!!!! I wouldn't dare hold my breath on that one. Not even the remasterd (or was it remixed?) version of Loveless that was promised and even presold on Amazon, what?, two years ago! SUCKERS.

I'll bet at least 50% of all active bands put out an album in 2011. Listing them all here would be futile.

Nah.

It seems like the norm is every 2-3 years now. Plus, the longer a band has been around the longer the time in between albums.

I can't believe in the late 60s and early 70s bands were releasing albums less than a year after the previous.

You may think the Beatles are the best example of this, but the Beatles suck.

The Smiths released four albums, seventeen singles (EIGHT of which were non-album stand alones) and two compilations in less than four years.  3 years, 10 months to be exact.  Next to the Bible, the greatest story ever told.  Johnny Marr was only 23 when they broke up.

The White Stripes Heading Back Into The Studio!

Although they've been on hiatus since 2007, Meg and Jack White are returning to the studio to record another album.

Jack said:

"We thought we'd do a lot of things that we'd never done: a full tour of Canada, a documentary, coffee-table book, live album, a boxed set. It was one long project that took almost three years.

Now that we've gotten a lot of that out of our system, Meg and I can get back in the studio and start fresh."

OMG! Cannot wait!

For those of us whose love for late-night, sweat-inducing rock music didn't die when the late 90s' psych bubble burst, we still have one always-consistent
beacon of hope: Bardo Pond. For the weary listener, they will always be a haven for musical exploration paired with those uncomfortable acid comedowns.
Per usual, they have once again brought us a little nugget from their darkened corner of Philly that we can bathe in for a while, submerged, apart from
the ever-devolving music world. On January 11, Bardo Pond will be dropping a fresh nugget of psych goodness onto this planet in the form of a self-titled
LP on
Fire Records.
Nothing can truly prepare one for a Bardo Pond album, but if their recent output is any indicator of what to expect, expect the sound of (lots of) drugs.

Bardo Pond tracklisting:

01. Just Once
02. Dont Know About You
03. Sleeping
04. Undone
05. Cracker Wrist
06. The Stars Behind
07. Waynes Tune

Well, Ben, you're at it again. As if all your many solo efforts (Six Organs of Admittance), side-solo efforts (Benja Minh), bands (Comets on Fire, Badgerlore),
and side projects (Rangda, August Born, and such) weren't enough to keep those pickin' fingers agile, you've gone and added another branch to the monolithic
Tree of Chasny, this time carrying the name 200 Years. This new project is a collab between Chasny and Magik Markers' Elisa Ambrogio that developed over
an 11-month stretch where they holed up in a former toolshed in Seattle and wrote tunes, the results of which will comprise their forthcoming debut album.
The two are probably hitting up Key Club Studios right now to start the documentation of those many months of hibernation-style guitar craft. Luck would
have it that Drag City, the home of both their main projects, has already staked claim on whatever form this session takes and is planning on releasing
the recordings in LP form sometime next year. Also planned is a follow-up, "more abstract" release on Ba Da Bing! as part of the label's subscription series.
Given the known musical wanderings of both musicians, I could take a swing at what this'll come out sounding like, but I'd rather wait to hear it myself.

Wire announce new album in their "Colors" series, Red Barked Tree, due in January

by
KID MIDNIGHT
 on 10-19-2010

Wire, Britain's first "real" punk rock band, have announced that their newest album, titled Red Barked Tree, will be available for mass consumption on January
11 through the band's Pink Flag label. The album, Wire's 12th, is the follow-up to 2008's Object 47 and is further proof that not all bands get worse with
age. Well, at least the bands that weren't shitty to begin with.

The album was written and recorded throughout 2010 and features the slightly-less-than-four trio of Colin Newman, Graham Lewis, and Robert Grey, with the
press release making sure to mention that the recording sessions had "no guests." I guess Wire really want to reinforce the fact that they made this album
as a band, most likely to prove that 40-somethings in a punk band can make good music without the aid of young folk. Or maybe they don't want to admit
who they're friends with??

Regardless of the how or why, the album was created, the guys have put together a good group of songs, and you can even hear one if you want! Yeah! Just
head over to  that less professional site  (Pitchfork) and take a listen to the very cool, very Wire-like "Two Minutes."

The Dirtbombs do Detroit Techno

Detroit is due for another revival ever since Jack White left the Motor City for dead or perhaps Detroit does it to itself, but the glaring issue remains
that we must never forget about Detroit. The Dirtbombs' Ultraglide in Black was a retrospective covers celebration of Detroit soul, RB and of course, Motown.
The band is back on its celebration style to resurrect Detroit techno out of its urban decay.

Dirtbombs frontman Mick Collins is a nostalgiaist. In reworking Detroit classics in live instrumentation, his adjustments put little twists on the originals.
For instance, "Shari Vari" sounds less like a fuzzed-out and pulsating rhythm machine and more like a sleek German post-punk track that makes you ponder,
"what if Gang of Four were from Berlin?" Party Store will feature the refashioning of early Carl Craig, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May classics. Carl
Craig even lent modular synthesizer programming to The Dirtbombs' epic 21-minute reworking of "Bug In The Bassbin".

Party Store is out February 1 on
In The Red.

Every time a new Mogwai album comes out, I think "Maybe this is the one that will get me back into bombastic-yet-subtle instrumental post-rock!" and I'm doing it again with 'Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will'. I've only listened to it once but it sounded great. Not sure if it will stick around though.

Do the lesser parts of the opera gradually die off only for the power chords to evolve and strengthen to eventually take over the world? After all, that is often the basic progression of lots of songs. You get that build up to a crescendo with some sort of dénouement. Consider it a sort of musical natural selection.

I feel as though this press release needs to be shared with everybody.
(I have no idea what this band sounds like)

Description from label: "Abigail have returned with their fourth album. Entitled ?Sweet Baby Metal Slut,? this album continues in the style Abigail began
exploring on ?Forever Street Metal Bitch? and further refined on ?Ultimate Unholy Death.? Playing a style that sounds like a syphilitic union of Bathory,
G.G. Allin, and Destruction, Abigail reach new lows of perversion and degeneracy. Abigail understand that, while some may find Satan through arcane ritual,
one may also find Him in the immoral stench of fresh pussy. ?Sweet Baby Metal Slut? is the ultimate culmination of Abigail?s recent work and represents
the perfection of their indulgence in insane and Satanic lust. "

Flaming Lips release audio experiment album for free today (http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/immaculate-noise/posts/flaming-lips-release-audio-experiment-album-for-free-today)

The Oklahoma rock act has been releasing bits and b(l)obs of audio compositions on its YouTube channel, with the intention that each piece is played on a separate handheld smartphone or similar iPhone-like device.

"Imagine the lo-fi symphonic joy that you, along with family, friends, pets, and others, will create at the touch of a button. The more devices, the more harmonic possibilities can be constructed. You and your device, at one with the music, become the orchestra, just as the Gods of Technology naturally intended it to be."

sounds deep, maaaaaaaaaan...

Excited for this:"Björk and Syrian singer Omar Souleyman have teamed up for a joint album to be released later this year. This will mark Souleyman's pop debut ? and, presumably,

his first time singing with a former member of the Sugarcubes.

It's "the first-ever major western pop release to feature Syrian dabke and Iraqi choubi music", according to a press release received by
Pitchfork.
Beyond our excitement for the braiding of Souleyman's raucous Arabic techno and Björk's meticulous art-pop, we are equally thrilled by the mention of a

"major ... release": it's one thing for Björk to issue a one-off remix download, and another if she and Souleyman have spent time recording together. All

we know for the moment is that the project promises a limited 12in vinyl record, CD and digital download, before the end of 2011.

Björk is
Iceland
's biggest musical export, but Souleyman is much less well known in the west despite
a serious cult following.
The Icelandic singer discovered the dabke MC on YouTube,
she told NPR
in 2009: "What's refreshing about [Souleyman] is the party," she said. "It's really alive and very urgent. And he's not above using synths, electronics,

drum machines and YouTube. He's really eager to make something that's vibrant."

Souleyman has two UK dates booked for later this year, at London's Field Day in August, and the Isle of Wight's Bestival in early September."

I feel as though a lot of Ween fans would
dig this (and much of SCG's material, for that matter): "By my count, Baroque Primitiva is the sixth album cut by Alvarius B. and is, like its predecessors, a deep swim through mysterious waters. The 11 tracks
here were recorded at various sessions over the course of several years and range from "Humor Police" (a track that imagines what Syd Barrett might have
sounded like had he been a devotee of rembetika) to a trippily Beatles-damaged version of "You Only Live Twice" (the sole surviving shard of the aborted
Alvarius B. Plays The Bond Songbook project). Baroque Primitiva is the first long-format telegram from Alvarius B. since he lost his mothership (the Sun
City Girls, with whom he employed his slave name, Alan Bishop) and it also feels like his most consistently non-acerbic -- perhaps even most beauty-oriented
-- work. The songs often have a meditative pace and are filled with gorgeous lo-fi blends of vocals, guitar, bass and keys. Eyvind Kang guests on several
tracks, but the bulk of the material was broadcast direct from the naked soul of Alvarius B., which turns out to be a warmer, sweeter place than you might
imagine. The record also marks the return of the equally-legendary Poon Village label, whose 1993 Sun City Girls LP, Live At C.O.N. Artists, is a rare
and lovely piece of that bands sonic puzzle. Poon Villages productions are always extraordinary in visual terms, and Baroque Primitiva is no exception.
The covers meditative human mandala is a brilliant ocular ode to shifting visions of feminine pulchritude, and is worthy of the best framing job you can
afford." -Byron Coley "Screenprinted jackets feature a double gate, hand-cut spines, and metallic photo print featuring 16 naked girls. Heavy 180 gram
black vinyl pressed in the Rust Belt. Limited edition - 300 copies available for sale for the whole world." -Poon Village

Liking the Insane Warrior (RJD2) record. Good to hear that he has stopped trying to be Steve Mason.

Nouvelle Vague - The Singers

"The Singers" project originally started to be planned in 2007, but at the time most of the singers who worked with the band didn't had songs of their own so it was not possible to do it at that time. During the past three years more new singers joined the band and the compilation gained form and the final result for 2011 is a high quality selection of music with exclusive and unreleased songs.

Patetico Recordings is putting out a 6 volume set for the Japan Disaster Relief Fund called Rock Back For Japan. The series is named after an article that I wrote about the project. Lots and lots of good submissions including SPC ECO (Dean Garcia of Curve's band), Deep Cut (Mat Flint of Revolver's latest band), Screen Vinyl Image, Ceremony, Black Swan Lane (Mark Burgess from The Chameleones latest band), Spotlight Kid (former members of Six.By.Seven, Bent and Spiritualized), Thrushes, One Unique Signal (backs up Stephen Lawrie as The Telescopes), and lots and lots of bands from all over the planet.

"Based on the overwhelming response from artists from all over the globe, we are adding an additional volumen to the compilation series to help the animals in need. This one will be called: "Rock Back for Japan: Animal Rescue""

I was unable to find the reissue thread so I will post this in here.

"Chalk Circle existed in the Washington, DC metro area punk/hardcore scene between 1981 and 1983. They were the first all-female rock or punk band to ever
record and perform in DC, and their recorded output will finally be available in one place: on the Reflection LP, released by both Mississippi Records
and Post Present Medium. The twelve songs on this release are from compilations on Outside Records and WGNS, live shows, and unreleased recordings. It
also comes with a sixteen page booklet compiled by guitarist/vocalist Sharon Cheslow that tells the Chalk Circle story in its entirety for the first time.
The booklet features photographs, press clippings, and extensive liner notes by renowned musician and producer Don Fleming, whose band Velvet Monkeys headlined
Chalk Circle's first shows.

Chalk Circle, although personally part of the birth of hardcore as friends and fans of the Dischord scene, musically never fit in to the stringent rules
of that scene. They sound like they were from a time where experimentation was rewarded, where new ideas were examined and transformed by people who were
curious and excited to fit with the moment. The ideas were then transformed again, when the moment changed. In an interview by Alex Guiness in 1982, in
response to a question about how to label Chalk Circle, vocalist/guitarist Mary Green answered, "We'll create our own tag." For those who want a tag, well,
think about the raw experimental U.S. punk of Flipper, Bush Tetras, and The Minutemen, or the innovative post-punk of Delta 5, The Swell Maps, Liliput,
and The Slits. Think about the youthful energy of DC Hardcore and the enthusiasm of teenagers making music that comes from the heart and not from copying
riffs from rock records. Think about the straight-laced nature of the nation's capital and the joy of creating your own culture in a stifling straight
world. Think about the promise of punk to teenage women. Chalk Circle expresses all this through music that is spirited, unique, creative, powerful, and
fun." --Mississippi/PPM

It's great to find a up and coming soul outfit, that while still a little rough around the edges don't sound like they were created by committee.  Blue Eyed Soul in the vein of early Style Council, that still has a bit of the snap of The Jam to them.

Is Bryan Ferry's Olympia 2010 or 2011? Iunno but I really like it a lot. Prob as close to a Roxy Music reunion as we'll get too.

edit: ahhh shoulda looked it up, its 2010. still.

I went for a run listening to the new Atari Teenage Riot album today and I was just laughing the whole time. It was a good laughing though that's probably not the reaction they were going for. Still, blaring mid-90s guitar, tinny beats and germans shouting slogans in their efficient accents was pretty terrific.

Finally heard some of the new Bon Iver, sounds like he heard "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" and thought this is great, but it could use even more reverb. Is Dave Gilmour getting some royalties on the back end?

My Morning Jacket Cover the Muppets

For the next Muppets movie, Disney has cooked up an ace tribute set titled Muppets: The Green Album, which features top artists like Weezer, Paramore, Andrew Bird, Sondre Lerche, Evanescence's Amy Lee, and others covering classic songs from the Jim Henson songbook (out August 23). One of those highlights is My Morning Jacket's rendition of "Our World," which SPIN is premiering exclusively.

Supposedly, Kevin Shields and Paul Weller are joining forces to make something of their own. Don't know if it's only one song or maybe even an entire album. Don't have a clue when this might actually see the light of day but I'm just putting it in here for now. Not up for creating a 2013 thread yet! Hopefully, Paul will keep on Kevin's ass enough to allow this work to come to some sort of fruition.

Atheist Xmas is an EP of alternative Christmas songs by Gruff

Atheist Xmas is an EP of alternative Christmas songs by Gruff Rhys ? an unholy trinity of three turkey-free new tracks for the festive season.

Motown-tinged opener Post Apocalypse Christmas sees Gruff re-imagining the ?Winterval? through the semi-melted eyes of a nuclear holocaust survivor.  Humanist hymn At The End Of The Line deploys lush vocal harmonies, saxophone and also features in the soundtrack for Jesus And Mary Chain bassist Douglas Hart?s semi-autobiographical short film, Long Distance Information.  Mournful piano ballad and curtain closer Slashed Wrists This Christmas addresses the seasonally taboo subjects of manic depression and suicide.

Atheist Xmas is due out on 19th December.
