Hmmm, My birthday weekend, in the California desert, with a chance to see Skynyrd.
That's a pretty sweet prelim list. Maybe I should trade in my SXSW tix.

I have also heard
the Stills
either way , i am going again. It was one of the best concerts i have ever been to.
-
Have you even listened to Skynrd or Kings of Leon? Don't think they sound at all alike.

the Electric Six and the Thrills are also confirmed i believe.
-
Well, I have a pretty strong feeling my sister and I are going out for this one. It's just too good to pass up...the Pixies alone does it for me. How could I not go see them? My God...what an amazing event this will be. PJ Harvey would be nice, especially if she does a Desert Sessions type thing with Queens of the STone Age.
-
Unless work prevents it, I will try to go this year. Tickets will probably sell pretty quick, no?

i dont know about tickets selling too fast. Last year it never even sold out. And its a big place, so i dont know. They were $80 a day last year and it IS in the middle of nowhere.
But radiohead and the pixies. who knows, could sell out quickly. i doubt it though.

I know I could look this up, but where is Coachella, how do you get there, where do you stay...
I'm thinking of either Coachella or Bumbershoot (sp?) this year. Thoughts on which is a better trip?
-
A sleepy desert town in California. Kinda cool actually. I drove through there once. You wouldn't expect a festival to be held there.

Heres a quick summary, since i went last year.
Fly into San Diego, LA, or Phoenix, rent a car a drive for a few hours (2 1/2 from San Diego, i know) into the desert. You will be in the middle of the brown desert and you will get a hotel out there. There are plenty of places to stay within 10 miles of the show. Or you can camp at the venue or Joshua Tree Natl Park or somewhere like that.
The show starts at 1pm and goes til Midnight each night. Bands on 3 stages, DJs in 1 and then random stuff in another.
Its on a polo field and not "in the desert" so what you are walking and standing on is like a golf course fairway, not dirt. its a BEAUTIFUL place to see a show. easy to walk in between stages (10 minutes from one end to the next) and the lines for the restrooms, food and beer (which are in beer gardens) are virtually non-existant.
You'll see movie stars and artists walking about having a good time, and the crowd is generally musically knowledgable and you can get close to the stage without being pushed/shoved or moshed into (save the NERD performance where they DID have a mosh pit). Its hot though, during the day, but gets chilly at night, and thats when the whole sky turns purple!
Anyway, you kind of have to be a trooper, cause its a long day, and you are stuck in the venue with not much around it all day (not lke Bumbershoot) but i think the lineup is great, and shit, Southern Cali or Rainy Seattle?? i know what i'd chose every time!
hope that helps :)
-
oh and for your real question
Coachella is held in Indio California.
about 2 1/2 hours east of San Diego and LA and about in between the two.
-
helps tons, sonick -- thanks.
-
my pleasure.
and if you decide to go, let me know. I'll tell you which hotel to book to be close to things ;)
-
Man, that sounds like a pleasant, enjoyable time.

Totally. We'll rent a bus .... no a plane. I am not riding on a bus with mankie for 3 days.
:D
-
pollstar said the pixies might tour...
-
Thanks for the description, sonickteam2. I'm planning on going for sure. I've heard only good things about it and next year looks like a great lineup. And a purple sunset? I'm there!
-
I didn't realize it was that close to Joshua.
I really think I'm gonna give it go. I figure I need to make up for the Field Day debacle anyway.

cool!! well, here's a hint. We are staying at the Motel 6 in Rancho Mirage, which is in Palm Springs CA. Its only a couple miles from the venue, but its in a "downtown" area so there will be bars and stuff to venture to after the show. And last year it was only $76 a night for a 2 double bed room.
i wouldnt suggest camping, because its just a bunch of tents on the grass, and they dont allow alcohol (and its kinda chilly and dusty at night!)
-
do they have a current website? the one I keep getting looks like last years
-
Originally posted by grotty:

actually, yeah. They havent done a damn thing to thier site since the last show. but i would keep checking, cause when they announce stuff officially, they will change the site.
www.coachella.com (http://www.coachella.com)
also, if you look at that site, on the main page, if you scroll down to the bottom of lineup and look at that crazy picture of the moon and the palm trees....believe it or not, thats REALLY what it looks like at night....crazy, eh?
-
A couple of other things that I'll add as general info...
I enjoyed camping along the Salton Sea. It was about 20 minutes from the venue, quite peaceful and the charge was around $10 per night.
On the Monday following I went through Joshua Tree before I had to catch my flight out of LAX. JT was about 20 minutes from Indio and the trip from/to LAX was 2 - 2.5 hours.
You could also fly into Palm Springs, Long Beach, or Ontario.
The grass is so lush that you can walk around barefoot all day.

From MTVNews.com:
Radiohead, Pixies, Kraftwerk Playing First Night Of Coachella
Organizers have confirmed one of the worst-kept secrets in music â?? that Radiohead, German electronic quartet Kraftwerk and the newly reunited Pixies will headline the first night of the two-day Coachella music festival on May 1 in Indio, California.
Last year's festival was headlined by the Beastie Boys and Red Hot Chili Peppers and included performances by the White Stripes, the Stooges, Ben Harper, Queens of the Stone Age, Underworld, N.E.R.D. and approximately 70 other bands (see "Iggy, Beasties, White Stripes Lead Three-Pronged Invasion At Coachella").
Modeled after eclectic European festivals like Glastonbury and Reading, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival features a diverse lineup of rock, hip-hop and dance artists. Taking heed of the Woodstock concerts staged in 1994 and 1999, Coachella organizers have made a point of providing concertgoers with plenty of space and easy access to amenities like restrooms and water.
Barring the announcement of other concerts preceding Coachella, the festival will mark the first show for the Pixies since the highly influential post-punk quartet imploded 11 years ago (see "Pixies To Reunite For Tour, Album").
Kraftwerk, meanwhile, are regarded as even more influential. Their melodic, electronic compositions inspired the creation of entire genres of music, including house, techno and â?? as Afrika Bambaataa demonstrated with his classic "Planet Rock" â?? hip-hop. Kraftwerk reunited in 1999 to release a new single, "Expo 2000," and last year reworked their song "Tour De France" into an entire album.
Coachella organizers are still finalizing contracts with dozens of other bands, including headliners for the festival's second day.
-
I'm getting chills just hearing about it, I might just go again too!
-
Are there exact dates? I scrolled through the thread and didn't see anything.
Oops, May 1, I knew that would happen.
-
yeah, they changed the website now, and it has the date and what not, and the ole "Website coming soon"
at www.coachella.com (http://www.coachella.com)
should be in the beginning of Feb is when they will announce things.

I'm flying down with a large group from the Bay Area. We're statying at a house on a golf course in Rancho Mirage and may throw a party - I'll let you all know.
Most of the info has been dead on, except where to fly into the area. Do not fly to Phoenix as it's a good 8-9 hour drive to Indio. Vegas would be closer at 4-5 hours.
The cheapest flight from your side of the country is likely BWI to Ontario on Southwest, which is in between LA and Indio (actually nearly an hour closer to Indio than is LAX).
Other inexpensive alternatives are Dulles to Long Beach on Jet Blue, which is no further a drive to Indio than is LAX.
LAX, Long Beach or Orange County to Indio is about a two hour drive but can take up to four with LA traffic.
San Diego is about 2.5-3 hour drive to Inio.
Ontario is about a 1-1.5 hour drive.
There are plenty of cheap hotels to stay on Indio Blvd. that are within a 10 minute drive to the polo grounds and lots of places to camp if that you're thing. Joshua Tree, Salton Sea and Anza Borego and all really beautiful places to sleep in a tent, but it does get chilly in the desert at night.

We will have to get tickets as soon as they go on sale. I suspect that the fest might just sell out this year... The Pixies! Yow.
I am also staying at the Motel 6 in Rancho Mirage. And I agree that we should all meet up.
Now if The Cooper Temple Clause would just announce an appearance at Coachella...that would make it tres excellente.

i have driven from Phoenix to LA in 6 hours. and Indio is like 130 miles east of LA right on I-10. i think phoenix would only be about 4-5 hours.
either way i am flying into San Diego (like last year) or Ontario.

If Kraftwerk is playing, I'm definitely there.
Btw, anyone know of a good way to get there? I'm hearing that the best way to avoid the traffic there is to exit the 10 freeway on Monroe, not Indio Blvd.
-
LCD Soundsystem and T. Raumschmiere have announced thier Coachella appearances on thier booking site www.billions.com (http://www.billions.com)

Cool. I booked mine in Rancho Mirage, but its not too far away. just closer to downtown Palm Springs. just a note, the Palm Springs/Indio one (i think) is where i stayed last time, and there not much within walking distance anyway, but i think Rancho Mirage has stuff you can walk to.
they are really only like a mile from each other though.
-
Sounds good...I envision myself driving around listening to QOTSA's first album for a bit. :) Even though it'll be a bit warmer when Coachella rolls around, it sure is nice to think of warm weather when it's freezin' cold in DC!

Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails is MUCH MUCH better than last years choices Beastie Boys and Red Hot chili Peppers.

so what is the guess on how much tickets will be? and is it general admission?
-
Originally posted by pollard:

general admission most definitely. its on a polo field(s) which means its just some field. very green grass though, not like some other places. there are a few sets of bleachers here and there, other than that, no where to really sit.
tickets were $160 for both days last year, and thats after service charges and shipping and what not.

Some other "rumors"
-Franz Ferdinand
-Morrissey
-Desert Sessions (Josh Homme, PJ Harvey, Dave Grohl)
-Grohl's side project - Probot - with Lemmy.
I don't have any idea how accurate these are. Just passing them along.

-
christ, i haven't seen the cure in probably 15 years!
they did a good show. and anyone i've ever spoken to that has seen them live has good things to say.
$160 for 2 days of music. that's totally reasonable. now, if only my work bonus were 3 times the size, then i'd be joining you all out there.

Why isn't everyone staying right in Indio?

Well, I was told about the Coachella dates in November, but most of the rooms in Indio at that time claimed that people were calling and booking rooms already, and that there weren't any rooms available. However, I tried again a few days ago and got a room only a few blocks away from Coachella.
I guess it's just timing...

we found that it really didnt matter too much where you stayed. If you are right next to the venue, you have to go out into town to get breakfast/cigarettes/beer etc in the morning anyway so its just something you pass on the way to the show. either way, the venue is down this long ass road and i dont think theres any hotels on it. i dont remember seeing anything that was walking distance....not in less than a 30 minute walk from the gate.

Don't know about walking, but we're staying at the Quality Inn on Monroe St., which is only a 5 minute drive to the lot. None of us drink alcohol or smokes and we're bringing our own food, so we should be good.

I dunno, I saw both the Cure and the Pixies back in the summer of 89 in London, and it wasn't that special. Thankfully, Radiohead didn't exist.

Rhett - check out a band called Pedal Steel Transmission. You may like. I was digging it all weekend: pitchfork on Pedal Steel Trans (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/p/pedal-steel-transmission/angel-of-the-squared-circle.shtml) It's all over the place - sometimes sounding like crazed indie mariachis.
and I saw the Cure back at the Cap Ctr. I recall it being very good, or as good as it could be in an arena. I'm still looking forward to it in spite of your contrariness. :p

I'm definitely going this year... been putting it off the last couple years. I hope the sunday lineup is not a "left over" lineup. I'm going one day, and I'd prefer to avoid the largest draw. Radiohead is probably my favorite band, but I've seen 'em a few, and rather enjoy a relaxing day with good music than a crammed day waiting for a band I've already seen.
-
The official site (http://www.coachella.com/main.html) is now up. And apparently, the lineup will be announced next week.

Personally, I'm hoping for PJ Harvey, Grandaddy, the Shins, and Queens of the STone Age (yeah, I know they've played the past 2 years, but Indio is practically their hometown).

Any idea what the drive from San Diego would be like? I hate the idea of camping.

2-3 hours. each way. traffic is SD isnt bad. if you're leaving monday morning after the show, i wouldnt want to drive into LA.
anyway, thats what we did last year, and will do again this year.
you can even just hop right over to the beach for the afternoon! its like 10 minutes away!

Mother of God...Belle and Sebastian too? OK...this is truly insane. And I've been hearing that PJ Harvey, Basement Jaxx and Stereolab have all confirmed as well. This has to be the best concert lineup for any festival I have EVER seen. I better double check that hotel reservation, but at this point I'd sleep in Tijuana if I had to.

DESERT SESSIONS - IN THE DESERT!
DESERT SESSIONS, the project put together by QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE mainman JOSH HOMME, THE SLEEPY JACKSON, THE STILLS and BLACK REBEL MOTORCYCLE CLUB, will join a reunited PIXIES, THE CURE and RADIOHEAD at CALIFORNIAâ??s COACHELLA FESTIVAL this May.
Bright Eyes, The Thrills, Moving Units, Turbonegro, Junior Senior, LCD Soundsystem, Wilco and Dizzee Rascal will also perform over the two day long event running May 1-2 at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, California.
Promoters have been working on putting the fifth instalment of Coachella, for almost a full year but according to partner Paul Tollett, getting Pixies on the bill had been on his personal wish-list for years.
"I canâ??t put it all on me," Tollett said of the bandâ??s upcoming reunion. "I wish I could take the credit. Mark Geiger [co-founder of Lollapalooza] . . . he called one day and said, â??Donâ??t tell a soul, but do you think youâ??d be interested in Pixies?â?? Iâ??m like â??Yeah!â?? He said, â??What about the first play of Pixies?â?? Iâ??m like, â??Even better!â?? When youâ??re a festival promoter you dream of moments like that."
Pixies are scheduled to play just before headliners Radiohead on night one of the event. Following Radiohead, German, experimental stalwarts Kraftwerk will perform on the Dance Stage.
Tickets go on sale Valentine's Day, February 14 and cost $75 for a day ticket or $141 for a weekend pass.

does that make Portland,OR the Manhattan of the west? yikes.

Well, to be fair, I have only been to southern California. S.Cal is a lot like NJ, IMO. It's New Jersey on steroids.
-
i dont like southern california either.
LA is lame and San Diego is kinda gross. then its just a desert and some smog and a lot of people who speak spanish.
San Jose is very nice. i only go to SoCal for this show
jersey?? do they have a lot of car dealerships?

I was thinking more of oil refineries and chemical plants. Choked highways and rude locals.
Nice waves though. S.Cal, not NJ. The waves in NJ are no better than OC. By OC I mean Ocean City...and not Orange County. Orange County has some bitchin' surf!

you know, thats funny you mention that. When i was young, i went to PEI with a friends family and it is beautiful. We had this house on the beach and everything. Except it was freakin 50 degrees every damn day in the middle of June!!!
sure, i want to go into that water. crazy assholes.

Alright, you are sort of right. I don't think I kept the thread alive and kicking for four freaking straight months, as this one seems destined to be, but your point it made.
I think it's hilarious than Sonick would call me a redneck.

Hmmm, that reminds me...SCTV once did a parody of THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO called The Streets of Prince Edward Island with John Candy in the Michael Douglas role. Hilarious!

Rednecks like Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney. Alt-country is the antithesis of that. Just like punk rock was the antithesis of bloated prog-rock back in the 70's.
John Edwards is from North Carolina. Is he a redneck? And I lived in the Triangle Area, which, save for DC, has the highest rate of PHD's in the country...way higher rate than Baltimore.
And Vansmack is a NASCAR fan, and he seems like the antithesis of a redneck to me.

PEI has become a hot destination ever since they built a bridge connecting it to the mainland. Now they have like five different Anne of Green Gables conventions every year.

i've contemplated doing a driving tour of the maritime provinces. . .and being able to drive to pei is really cool. course, going to st. john in newfoundland, and taking the ferry to nova scotia sounds really cool too.

fly up there and rent a car. the less people that know you are American up there the better. they are not as "US friendly" at Ontario or BC.

So where are the best & least US friendly places in the frozen north, eh???

Probably because they are Canadian rednecks, akin to American rednecks who don't take too kindly to fureners.

hmmm. thats a tough one.
friendly - I would say most of Ontario and British Columbia definitely. and some of Alberta as well.
unfriendly - mostly just NS/Newfie and PEI along with Montreal. but Montreal are just dicks anyway.
think about it this way, very rural places have more narrowminded views sometimes, and how much do you think American tourism boosts the Saskatchewan economy!

Redneck American = French Canadian
NO?

I dunno, I seem to recall the French Canadians as being more like French people than American rednecks...but then again I've only ever been to Montreal.

yeah. french Canadians are not the rednecks at all. its the ones up north and in the prairie. yikes.
the french canadians (frogs) are more like New Yorkers i suppose than anything else down here.

Funny, I was going to use the New YOrker comparison as well.

Well, i think they have maybe a little bit of the "we're carrying the load of our country" kind of feel. Quebec wants to leave the country but it fears Canada wouldnt survive without it. (not that NYC wants to leave, but could we live without it?)
Also, worldwide, Montreal is the first place you think of when you think of Canada, same with NYC and believe me, people who live there know it.
they always tend to know whats "hip" before everyone else :)
take a look at the Stills....look NYC to you?

I see your point. New Yorkers do tend to be quite provincial. I guess I think of French-Canadians as haughty and arrogant (probably because of the French part), but in my experience, New Yorkers are quite friendly.
-
New Yorkers are friendly, unless you try to wear a Red Sox cap into Yankee Stadium, like I did when I was 11.
The obnoxious, rude New Yorkers sitting next to us the last time we were at Yankee Stadium turned out to be from Toronto.
-
I lived in Toronto for a couple of years and generally the francophone quebequois were always really friendly; the anglophone ones were the annoying pretentious ones ("Look at me! I'm from Quebec! I'm cultured!"). Same thing when I've been travelling - when I've been in Europe I've hung out randomly with Quebec people more than almost anybody else. It also helps that the French can't understand their accent or even just break out laughing. Quebec generally is an odd mix, though. It has a huge Hell's Angels contingent, for instance.
-
Originally posted by ggwâ?¢:

another similarity! Both New Yorkers and "Les Habitants" are known for being a bit snotty and holier than thou. However, its quite possible to know many of both who are friendly and inviting.
but hell, Montreal cant be that bad, they gave us William Shatner!

I'm not really sure if the lot of you have a clue as to what a "redneck" really is. Since the definition is an "eye of the beholder" thing, let me explain some traits I look for. I grew up in a "redneck" area. Lots of pick up trucks. Country music is/was king. Localism is a religion. Bar fights are part of the evening out while only having a choice of Genny or Bud on tap. There were housing areas 10 miles down a deadend road that I would just as soon walk through South East DC than pay a visit without a gun. Missing teeth, Flourescent (sp) Orange is fashionable and greasy ball caps with a large number three on it while chomping on Mail Pouch is hip. Need I say, sigur ros will not take the place of Monday night raw anytime soon.

Aren't you forgetting the US flag hooked on one window of the truck and a Dale Earnhardt flag on the other? Don't forget the bitch and the dog in the back of the truck. What about the sticker in the back window of the boy pissing on either a Ford or Chevy sign? And why does he never piss on a Dodge sign?
Or am I mistaken?
-
Bringing this back on topic...
The full line-up will be announced on Monday, Feb. 9.

Duh, he already mentioned the number 3 ballcaps.
I'll be wearing my number 3 t-shirt, or maybe my Bobby Labonte t-shirt Saturday night for the Budweiser Shootout. Woohoo!

Double Duh.....I didn't realize it was one or the other, flag or cap. I have seen many with both, and multiple flags actually.

Actually, American tourism boosts Saskatchewan economy quite a lot -- SK has a lot of Outdoor camps that hunters/fishermen pay a lot of money for (fly in camps, etc)...Alberta has a bit more of a kindred spirit with the states bc it mimics the States in many respects and it was founded by many Americans who were disappointed by what the States were doing...

Tears of joy...I just booked my tickets through the WASTE site and had no problems doing it. This is simply unreal. I'm going to Coachella. I cannot believe this one...I was talking last night with Bob Mould and he agreed this is really one for the books. Got the plane ticket, hotel, now I just have to wait for the tickets! I cannot believe how it easy it was...I'm pinching myself.

i've found it really easy to get tickets through waste every time.
i got my coachella tickets this morning too.
i was able to get pit tickets for toronto, atlanta, camden, etc. for the summer tour as well via waste with no problem. the only show i didn't get pit for was merriweather... and it wouldn't have mattered because i still would have missed half the show because of the fucking traffic.
-
The lineup is up today.... slight surprise. The airline and hotel is already booked, but I'm not going to soak there for two days, so I'm picking Sunday. I've seen Radiohead mulitple times and twice since the last album, so I'm opting for the Cure, Flaming lips, B & S, Air, BRMC, Broken Social Scene, Mogwai, Stellastarr, etc. I'm hoping it is much less crowded, because I'm looking for a relaxing weekend. I'm hoping to hit Death Cab and the Pixies somewhere on the east coast before then. But man, is that Sat. lineup strong... but I can't have everything.
