Oh boy...here comes the onslaught of pretentious lists of albums nobody's heard of before.  Let's see who can top who with most obscure albums (above post not included since most are recognizable).

This.

Hey now, it's a well known fact that if more than 100 people go to a band's show, the band has to suck by default.  ;D

One of my favorite records of this year, which was technically released first in the UK last year, is the Hello=Fire.  Sure the record is "obscure", but it's Dean F. solo album, he of the Waxwings, Dead Weather,  and member of both QOSTA's and Ranconteurs touring band.   Brendan Benson co-produced and it was recorded with members of QOSTA.   The record is straight rock, nothing flashy.

I also really enjoyed several retro soul/r&b/funk releases by the likes of The City Champs, The Sweet Divines, The Haggis Horns.

One of my favorite rock releases was by The Sails, who was a feature artists on Little Steven's Sat Channel.

#1 = Scott 'Wino' Weinrich - Adrift

This record blew me away actually. The man has made classic after classic for 30 years and yet it feels he is still warming up. The best may be yet to come.

Others I enjoyed:

Killing Joke - Absolute Dissent
The Sword - Warp Riders
BXI
Zoroaster - Matador
Kylesa - Spiral Shadow
Drunkdriver - Self Titled
High on Fire - Snakes for the Divine
The Dillinger Escape Plan - Option Paralysis

Cough - Ritual Abuse
Sage Francis - Li(f)e
Nachtmystium - Addicts: Black Meddle pt. 2
Tobacco - Maniac Meat
Tobacco - LA UTI
Priestess - Prior to The Fire
Surroundings - Self Titled

2010 had a lot to offer and I still have so much more to hear!

Just to be clear, "pretentious lists of albums nobody's heard of before" means a list of records you haven't heard, right? So how about you list all of the albums you have heard so we can all take care not to offend your delicate sensibilities.

A non-pretentious list because I've heard of these bands before?

hey, where's Arcade Fire's The Suburbs?  It won't be pretentious to mention/list it because people have heard of the band, right?

These always stress me out more than they should. That's because I can't remember everything I've heard. Worse yet, I always manage to leave something very good off my list. Plus, I still haven't heard everything relevant for my purposes. Very frustrating and embarrassing, especially if I decide to create an official Air Atlantic Underground Radio Best of list. So, here's just a working list in completely random order of my personal favorite releases of 2010.

Zaza - "Cameo" (EP)
Highspire - "Aquatic"
Presents For Sally - "A Touch Of Joy, A Touch Of Sadness"
Insect Guide - "Dark Days & Nights"
Stellarium - "Stellarium"
Soundpool - "Mirrors In Your Eyes"
Malory - "Pearl Diver"
Ceremony - "Rocket Fire"
The Black Angels - "Phosphene Dream"
Laboratory Noise - "When Sound Generates Light"
The Black Ryder - "Buy The Ticket, Take The Ride"
Dragontears - "Turn On Tune In Fuck Off"
Tears Run Rings - "Distance"
Whirl - "Distressor" (EP)
Air Formation - "Nothing To Wish For (Nothing To Lose)"
Seasonscollide ? "Disappearing Reappearing"
Scarlet Youth - "Goodbye Doesn't Mean I'm Gone"
Ghost Society - "The Back Of His Hands, Then The Palms"
Bon Accord - "Honeydew" (EP)
Sway - "This Was Tomorrow"
Butterfly Explosion - "Lost Trails"
The Vandelles - "Del Black Aloha"
Cotton Club - "Between Drones And Daisies"
Between The Cities Are Stars - "Between The Cities Are Stars"
Whatever Hippie Bitch - "Whatever Hippie Bitch"
Foxtail Somersault - "Reflection" (EP)

*I'm saving the new one by Secret Shine, "The Beginning And The End", for 2011 since it was released only about a week ago and most people won't hear it until then.

Jaguar just made Jeffml cry.

P.S. you have to hear that Jefre Cantu-Ledesma album I mentioned in the 2010 albums thread. A majority of the tracks sound like variations on a "To Here Knows When" sounding theme.

No, not really. Killsaly has heard of them and I would in no way consider him a 'nobody'. Besides, I can't help it that all of those people who listen to these releases don't bother with this board. Most aren't local anyway so no real need for them to hang around here.

Except for one short very ambient track, I haven't heard it yet. Looking forward to it though.

I want to hear that Salome record! They need to play some more shows too. One more album to add to my pretentious metal list is Unearthly Trance - V that thing was vicious, I can't believe I forgot about it.
Wilderness heart was cool too. Also I'm glad to see others dug the new Killing Joke. It was between that and Wino for album of the year for me.

Most years my top ten list is pretty easy to make and my #1 pick is usually very clear. This year is not the case. I'd have to say Flying Lotus was the 2010 album I enjoyed the most, though Black Tusk and Rick Ross were steady as well.

Flying Lotus 'Cosmogramma'
Black Tusk 'Taste the Sin'
Rick Ross 'Teflon Don'
Bare Wires 'Seeking Love'
Wild Nothing 'Gemini'
Dum Dum Girls 'I Will Be'
Kylesa 'Spiral Shadow'
Crystal Castles s/t
Electric Wizard 'Black Masses'
Major Stars 'Return to Form'

Also-rans:
Black Breath, Paul Cary, Erykah Badu, Darkthrone, Joanna Newsom, Best Coast, Sleigh Bells, Ratt, Drake, Wavves

And actually, I just realized that for some reason (shame? convenient memory lapse? urban vanilla? immaturity?) I neglected to mention that I listen to the Earl Sweatshirt a lot. Definitely my favorite out of all those Odd Future Wolfgang Kill Em All guys.

The Major Stars release does kick a lot of ass. There is a band that takes something that looks awful/cheesy on paper and makes it sound awesome.
