Title: SXSW Lineup
Post by: grotty on January 08, 2004, 09:35:00 am
They've finally posted a very small sample of the preliminary lineup. You can get it here (bottom of the page):

 http://www.sxsw.com/music/ (http://www.sxsw.com/music/)

 Notable:
 â?¢ The Delgados Glasgow UK
 â?¢ The Hives Fagersta SWEDEN
 â?¢ Modest Mouse Issaquah WA
 â?¢ The Stills Montreal QC
 â?¢ The Thrills Dublin IRELAND
â?¢ The Walkmen New York NY
â?¢ Radio 4 New York NY

Anything else on that short list that gets anyone excited?

Thanks for the link, I'll be there for the 4th year in a row.

I try not to get too excited about specific acts too early because you always have to make tough choices on friday and saturday, you're always going to have to miss someone you wanted to see.

I thought I read something about the Wrens being at SXSW.  Mission of Burma will be there.

Those would be 2 great adds. I don't love the new Wrens like most here, but I think that might change if I could see them live.

SXSW used to release the band list much earlier. Now they dump it literally just weeks before the event. It makes it very difficult to do a lot of pre-listening & research so that you can make those tough decisions that saco described.

I look forward to getting your recommendations once the full list is out.

Aren't we all sick of those poseurs the Thrills yet? I'd like to get together a group of REAL Americana artists to kick their scrawny major label asses all the way back to drunk leprachaun land.

Do they have something new out? Is it a reunion with original members?

As it gets closer, we should plan to meet up for a beverage - I've got a mostly harmless crew going. If I recall correctly, you dig DBT, and we'll definitely be at their gigs.

If you like the stuff on New West Records (DBT, Slobberbone, Flatlanders, John Dee Graham) they have a nicely done label party, usually on Thursday afternoon. Last year the Truckers played an acoustic hour long set. Twas a treat. All you need to do is ask for a pass in advance. After I make the contact, I'll pass it on.

Trying to find where I read it, but it is original members minus the tape operator. Since their shows last year were so succesful, they are working on a new album, and have a few shows lined up (SXSW, an Irving plaza gig, All Tommorrows Parties). i'll try to find where i read it.

EDIT:  Yeah, what the above says...

Drinks? Passes? Hell yeah! That would be great Grotty.   I always hit the Bloodshot afternoon party, but I think that is usually on Friday afternoon at Yard Dog.  Its almost to the point now that I look forward more to the afternoon parties more than the night showcases because they are outside in the sun and have cheap (or free) beer.

The Bloodshot party is another one of my favs. Did you make it last year? We got there a little late - in the middle of Trailer Bride. Got to see
the Waco Brothers set. Langford was SO fucked up...Going on & on railing against Bush.  I heard we missed quite a set from the Legendary Shack Shakers. If it was better than the one they did @ Antones the next night with the Black Keys, then we sure did miss something.

That's a mighty misleading heading they are using. That's gotta just be a  complete preliminary  list. It doesn't even look like enough bands to fill Wednesday evening. I don't see any New West or Bloodshot bands on there at all.

Even the SXSW page lists a few others (David Cross, Alkaline Trio, NOFX) that the paper did not. I'd bet, also, that the Old 97's will play, seeing as they've just signed to New West.

The inclusion of Against Me! along with NOFX and the Alkaline Trio suggests that the "Rock Against Bush" tour (organized by NOFX's Fat Mike) will be putting in an appearance.

There are something like 50 venues around Austin, with most of them concentrated in about a ten-block radius. Each act plays for 40-45 minutes, five or six bands per show for most shows.

ARGHHHHH!!!!!!! I fucking HATE that band!!!!!!!!!!! In fact, I hate them even more than The Thrills. Much more than The Thrills. They are one of those bands that when I hear their music, not only do I hate their music, but I can't get the songs out of my head. Spare yourself and avoid them at all cost for your own sanity. Though I know a few people who do like them, most of the people I know who are familiar with them can't stand them.

Don't confuse them with James Yorkston And The Atheletes, who are pretty good and sound a little like Ballboy.

Based on this sentence:

"you didnâ??t hear it here, but anyone who might enjoy a last cigarette under the Milky Way tonight should line up for wristbands pronto."

In the Austin Chronicle (http://www.austinchronicle.com/issues/dispatch/2004-01-16/music_TCB_all.html), I guess Dramarama and The Church are on board too.

I like it when they add these golden oldies (like the 'secret' Blur show last year)...it keeps the peeps from crowding the shows I really want to see.

first confirmed list of bands now up at http://www.sxsw.com/music/festival/ (http://www.sxsw.com/music/festival/) -- it doesn't include some of the bigger names who are scheduled to play (Willie Nelson, Old 97's, Los Lobos, Aimee Mann), but it is quite informative and much longer than anything previously posted.

Big Cheese      :D

There are quite a few bands on there that haven't made any other list yet (e.g., DBT, Von Bondies)

I can see that there are going to be some seriously tough choices this year.

You'll know you're in Texas for this one:

 La Zona Rosa (All Ages)
 â?¢ Slobberbone Denton TX Pop/Rock
â?¢ Tim Easton Columbus OH Singer/Songwriter
 â?¢ Drive-By Truckers Athens GA Pop/Rock
â?¢ The Flatlanders Lubbock TX Country

I guess Modest Mouse is  Hint, Hint @ La Zona Rosa on Wednesday.

I'd love some recommendations if anyone has a few minutes to review...

Whattya expect? You're mentally retarded.

I've seen the Shack Shakers a couple times already. I went to Antones last year to see the Black Keys - The LSS happened to be the act before. I was laughing so hard during that show that I actually spit my gum out into a friends hair. I think it was when he (the Colonel) pulled a handful of pubic hair & blew it into the crowd. The great stories just keep coming eh?     :D

Won't miss the Slobberbone & DBT show.

ggw posted a link above to preliminary schedules that were 'borrowed' from the SXSW site.

I've seen quite a few shows at La Zona Rosa & you are correct - it's not the best place in town. Now...the New West showcase last year @ the outdoor Cedar Street Courtyard was sweet.

Other favorite spots include the Red Eye Fly & Buffalo Billiards. And of course...The Continental Club. If you can catch a country tinged show there your Austin experience is complete.

The Continental Club isn't a SXSW venue this year -- they made the mistake of scheduling a week of Southern Culture on the Skids shows instead.

I'm actually the idiot responsible for finding that preliminary list on the SXSW site -- I say "idiot" because SXSW emailed the people who run that blog (donewaiting.com) and ordered them to take down the list (too many errors, apparently)... they've fixed the security holes on the official site, taken down all the preliminary pages they had set up, and on a possibly unrelated note, the unofficial sxsw_info yahoo group seems to have mysteriously disappeared...

That will be a big disappointment. Not only is it a great venue, but they had a couple of good events on that prelim schedule, including the Bloodshot Records showcase.

do you know where I can find the prelim schedule? a message board post or whatever? I didn't save a copy before it got deleted from the SXSW blog and the official site...
I didn't see it on the prelim schedule - my info about the SCOTS shows was from an Austin newspaper article - but if they are including it, I stand corrected.

Try to find the song "Dawn Of A New Error" by Black Lipstick. Shouldn't be too hard to find as it's been around for a couple years. Good rocking song.

According to the Continental Club website, SCOTS are there March 13-17, so they'll probably do SXSW shows Thursday through Saturday. And I think Alejandro Escovedo is planning on doing his annual Sunday night show there, although it's not an official SXSW event.

While I would agree that the Continental Club is honky-tonk heaven, I think no trip to Austin is complete without a visit to the legendary Broken Spoke, one of the last old-school honky-tonks left in central Texas.

Stubb's. Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker (and Liz Phair) are at LZR that night ... and Jesse Malin and the Honeydogs are a few blocks away at the Cedar Street Courtyard. So many choices, so little time...

The operative question, though, about the day party is: "...and is there any way we can get in? please?"

I'm preparing my show 'wishlist' this weekend. I'll then let you know where I plan to be. I'm sure we'll have some intersecting times. A DBT show would be sweet. I'll buy the first round...PBR & Jack Daniels in honor of!

I'm getting discouraged about the New West party. I know they are having one on Thursday, but no word yet from our hookup. Oh well, there's a great free gig over @ Emo's if that doesn't work out.

Here are 2 good links that do a great job of compiling all the extra-curricular stuff (in-stores, label parties, free day shows, etc.)
Sometimes this info is hard to get once you are there. The only problem is...when do you sleep?

Thx Pollard - I'll definitely make one of those. I'd love to catch the Buff Billiards show on Wed. It's a cool spot & would really kick things off great. The only challenge is that it means I miss Modest Mouse who are playing across town.

The first of many serious dilemnas...[sigh].

btw - I probably wasn't effusive enough about "That Much Further West." It's one of the best things I've heard in a while. Almost a perfect record for me - I hear Slobberbone, Centromatic & many others of the same ilk - It is pretty eclectic. If you don't love 1 song just keep listening.

I've got this friend who constantly tells me that there can't be that much good music out there to validate the high # of records that I have & buy.  New finds like this just routinely prove him to be wrong. Sometimes you just gotta kiss a few frogs...

twangirl & saco - I'll pm you with my phone #. Send me a message if you want to meet up.

The only definites for me are:

John Dee Graham Thurs @ Opal Divines  @ 3:45
 Then Brent Best @ 6:00

Since we didn't get the New West passes, we'll probably do the DIW party @ Emo's on Thursday afternoon

Friday we'll likely be at the Bloodshot bash.

Some brutal decisions still need to be made for the evenings, but I doubt we'll miss the New West showcase @ La Zona Rosa on Friday evening (wish it was anywhere else though...)

Hope we get a chance to meet up for a beer.
